This series of books is the ultimate reference for industrial hygienists. While the sheer size of Patty's is daunting, it should be on every IH's bookshelf. If you need to know anything about the toxicology of a chemical or other workplace health hazards, chances are it's in Patty's.

Pct Spin and Statistics, and All That (Advanced Book Classics)

What is a quantum field ?
This advanced book exposes the mathematical framework of quantum field theory, as discovered by Wightman, who explained, in an article published in Physics Today, that he was led to such abstract language in order to understand the forces that bind the deuteron nucleus! This was only the beginning: present books and papers on the structure of quantum fields employ (and develop!) mathematics which make the Streater-Wightman book look like Harry Potter. Still, this book is assumed reading for all these advanced studies. It is extremely well written, for one thing. The initial chapter introduces the concept of free particle along ideas which I think belong to Wigner: particles are irreducible representations of the Poicare group. So, group theory is necessary for the grammar of quantum field theory. Fields require Schwartz distribution theory, as intuitively discovered by Bohr and Rosenfeld. Then follow general theorems for local field theory, like spin-statistics, CPT (and all that...). There is now an appendix where more modern topics are presented, but the core of the book is more or less what I described. This is a great book, written with great care and wit. It is a pity that most physicists, even quantum field theorists, did'nt read it.

An easy to use, comprehensive text.
As a general practitioner who uses this book to answer fairly routine questions about care and treatment of children, I recommend it highly. It is easy to read and well organized. It openly acknowledges areas of ambiguity or controversy in the field and gives what appears to be a balanced view of the issues. I feel very comfortable relying on this text for most of my pedodontic questions.

A "must read" for pastors' and ministers wives!
I have been searching for a book that really captures what a pastors'wife goes through. This is the one. Ms. Arthur has been eavesdropping in our church and in our home! What I liked most about the book is that she didn't just limit her audience to the pastors' wife. She speaks to the husband, the kids and the members in the church. This was very helpful. Also, she didn't just commiserate about the problems, but she offered practical, biblical solutions to overcome the obstacles we face. I highly recommend it also for new pastors' wives. Somebody should have written this book 20 years ago!

A Journey In Ideas
You might no think it, but the concept of the perfectibility of man has been widely held by philosophers. Of course, what they meant by perfectibility hasn't always been the same. This topic is the subject of the very enjoyable work by John Passmore. He discusses the attitude of philosophers and theologians from antiquity to the present, as well as touching on writers such as Orwell, Shaw and Zamiatin. Needless to say, many have opposed human perfectibility and Passmore devotes sections of the work to opponents such as Augustine, Luther and Calvin. For example, Calvin writes: "He who comes nearest to perfection has not yet advanced half-way." [p. 162.]

This book is lengthy, but you can use it as a reference work on thinkers. For example, there is a fascinating discussion of Teilhard de Chardin, who as Passmore points out, combines almost all the diverse themes found in perfectabilist literature. [p. 410.] Even many who have read a fair amount about Teilhard might be surprised to see his almost grudging support for totalitarian regimes of Europe in the 40s.

Beg, borrow, buy, or steal this book if you have to. It's small and makes the most sense of any of the education books I've read, and I've read bookshelves full. I'm a K-12 and college math/science teacher, and this book is my bible.
