On the Beginnings of Satellite Communications
Published in Hardcover by San Francisco Pr (11 April, 1986)
Author: J.R. Preface by Arthur C. Clarke Pierce
Amazon base price: $20.00
Average review score:

Interesting memoir by a communications satellite pioneer
Pierce's 1968 memoir describes his work with the Echo and Telstar satellites, with side lights on Arthur C. Clarke's vision of geo-synchronous satellites, as well as contemporary efforts at NASA, ARPA, and to a minor extent Hughes. Good photos, good history of the hunt for funding, and a fine selection of strong opinions. It's short and incomplete but if you like to see how a field starts up, this is a book for you. Includes reprints of Clarke's 1945 article and Pierce's 1955 article.

On the Will in Nature: A Discussion of the Corroborations from the Empirical Sciences That the Author's Philosophy Has Received Since Its First Appe

by far Schopenhauer's worst
In this book, Schopenhauer attempts to back his system with scientific data from the mid 19th century. Needless to say, much of this book now appears a joke. Schopenhauer spends much time in The World as Will and Representation on the same task, and his discussions of empirical data backing his system are much more intelligent and interesting in his magnum opus. Furthermore, this book is wholly unnecessary for an understanding of Schopenhauer's system if one already has a hold on his other works. This should be the last work of Schopenhauer that one reads.
On the up side, the book contains a long preface where Schopenhauer chastises those who have overlooked his philosophy, as this book marked the dawn of his acceptance especially in England, and blames Hegel for the dumbing down of Germany. Some of the more comical Schopenhauer quotes on Hegel come from this preface. But what is even funnier is thatthe preface is followed by a six page Introduction where Schopenhauer rants on the same topics he did in the preface. Now that I think about how funny this was, I would definitely buy this book just for the preface and introduction.

Oregon Cattleman/Governor, Congressman: The Memoirs and Times of Walter M. Pierce. Ed and Expanded by Arthur H. Bone (500P)

Adequate overview of politician's life
This book, which incorporates autobiographical writings, provides a good overview of the life of Walter M. Pierce, a governor of Oregon and Congressman from that same state. Because of the use of the autobiographical writings, there is extremely detailed information about some aspects of Pierce's life that otherwise likely wouldn't have been covered, such as some of the close votes of his early political life. Unfortunately, the author is unable to explain why Pierce moved to Oregon in the first place or why a progressive like Pierce was also such a racist. Still, this is a good overview of the life of an important political figure in Oregon history and provides insight into life in Oregon in the early 20th century. There is also detailed information about the rise of the KKK in the state.

Now , Boldly I stand.
Fear as well as discouragement are hindrances to living live fully. Once you have trained your mind through the use of scriptural quotes and trusting in the unfailing unfallible word of god you will walk boldly even amidst the temporary transient
set backs of FEAR and Discouragement.

To be fearful is to see situations as impossible. To be fearless is to see circumstances and situations as possible with God. On the other hand Discouragement says "You will never be able to overcome or make it through the minor setbacks that you face in life. Discouragement also says you are a failure, you life will never amount to anything. Once again the answer resounds through
faith on God and Boldly stating "There is absolutely no Failure
in God.

Why do we fear? Do we realise that God in his wisdom has left us with the guidebook of life? Has hew not said "Fear not neither be discouraged? Did he not say "Lo I will be with you always until even the very end" So, it is my firm belief that when Fear and Discouragement and Dissapointment steps in Faith, Courage and Boldness is hindered and prevented from flowwing in our lives.

Such a book is timely, it is the manual of encouragement to those whose are struggling under the weight of DOUBT, Despair and
Depression which are the result of Fear and Dissapointment.

Basic concepts in patent law covered by book.
This book covers the fundamental aspects of patents. The main emphasis is on the US patent system, with a lesser amount of material on Canadian and international patents in general. After a brief history of the patent system, major chapters cover, specifics of the US patent system, Canadian patent system, what are the requirements for an invention to be patented, interpretation of patents as technical literature, patents as legal documents, and what information is needed to defend a patent.
Summary information of the major steps in the current US patent procedurses is outlined. Along with this, a basic glossary rounds out the books contents.
Overall, the material is presented in a clear and consistent pattern. Not a lot of depth of discussion is presented in any one area. The author's intent was to give a brief introduction to the entire area of patents, their uses, limitations, and requirements rather than delve into the arcania of specifics.
The main audience is technical professionals that need a brief background introduction to some of the major concepts involved. The majority of examples are taken from chemical process, substance, and method patents

The review you've been waiting for.
Greetings. I may be exactly where you were, wondering what this new revised edition has to offer that the others do not (Esp. the ORIGINAL UNABRIDGED VERSION of THE LAW OF SUCCESS that was released by Melvin Powers.)

Here's the deal:

This book actually has Hill's original work that was, I believe, the 5th edition published by Friends of Napoleon Hill, with a few adjustments. Some of the text has been altered ie the changing of "long-haired theorist" to simply "theorist".. etc. Also, instead of Hill's famous "The author claims" sayings, they've been altered to "I claim".

Lastly, this book is an annotated version, meaning that supplimentary comments are added. What I noticed unfortunately was the comments are brief, and not well researched. For example, Sartwell writes about how autosuggestion has been improved and documented after Hill's first publication, but has failed to offer the name of the science which studies the nature of the mind and subconscious influence. This science is called Neuro Lingustic Programming or "NLP".

One thing that you MAY be looking for (as I was) was that Sartwell talks about how Hill has changed his views on marriage and The Master Mind. In the original text, Hill stressed that we MUST get married with a woman to receive the full benefits of this principle. However, homosexuality exists, and some people do not wish to get married. (No problem, Hill now believes that Sex Transmutation (10th Step toward Riches in Think and Grow Rich will suffice.)

What I didn't like about this edition:

The little bookmark tassle in the book itself is poorly made, ie it's obviously just cut off with some sort of machine that frays the ends. Not impressive for an expensive collector's edition. Sigh.

Also, you will find inconsistencies, such as Matthew Hartwell's introduction claiming that Napoleon Hill wrote a classic called "Keys to Success". Sorry, but Napoleon Hill did NOT write this book; he wrote "Master Key to Riches".

Hope that helps your decision.

Thanks!

Nice little book
Printer's Devil to Publisher is a nice little book, easy to read, interesting primarily to those with Chattanooga connections (Ochs' adopted home city) or who are interested in the history of the NY Times. In the age of Hearst and Pulitzer, Ochs was a totally different kind of publisher, concerned with presenting the news accurately and fairly. He was also a civic legend, and did much for two very different cities. I recommend it for an evening's read.

Proverbs and Common Sayings from the Chinese

Proverbs and Common Sayings from the Chinese
I would recommend this book to a person who can recognize at least 1,000 Chinese characters, for familiarity with characters is necessary for a smooth reading of the explanation of the proverbs. This book wasn't written as I expected, in that the author presents and translates proverbs in paragraph form . . . there must be thousands of proverbs in here! However, reading this book is a good practice not only in becoming more adept at character recognition but also in Chinese culture. The author emphasizes the influence of culture upon language and vice versa; however, the deficiency of detail in the explanations causes the reader to draw her own 'pictures' and 'stories' in interpreting. Ultimately, I read this book for as much the character-reading practice as the proverb-learning. (The author translates each Chinese proverb into English, but does not always give the pronunciation of each character.)

Seems to have been quickly pieced together
Unlike the Disney Mouseworks storybooks, this one was assembled using frames from the movie. The images therefore tend to be a little blurry. The text has some inconsistencies with the storyline as well. Its shortcomings would be glossed over by its young audience, of course.
