Slightly obsolete, but still a classic.
If I were reviewing this book when it was brand new at the end of the sixties, I would have had to give it five stars. The only reason that I am demoting it by a star is that it is slightly out of date. New archaeological data and new historical insights call for an updated edition of this great book. I wrote the chief author and editor of this book, Geoffrey Ashe, to congratulate and praise him for all his wonderful work on this subject. I especially praised his _The Discovery of King Arthur_ which was released in 1985 (I gave that one a five star review). I told him that since he had completely revolutionized the subject with that one, even great books like _Quest for Arthur's Britain_ and _Arthur's Britain_ by Leslie Alcock (I gave that one a four star review), who wrote some of the chapters of _Quest for Arthur's Britain_, now need to be updated a bit. I was extremely fortunate to get a reply from Mr. Ashe, who acknowledged that while these books were state-of-the-art when they first came out, they are now out of date in some ways. For example, some of the chronological data could stand to be updated; more and more data continues to come to light shifting certain events and figures back a bit; Arthur for example is now believed to have flourished about a generation earlier than was once thought. This beautifully illustrated book serves several functions: it gives an overview of the evolution of the Arthurian legend; there's a chapter on the end of Roman Britain; there are several chapters by great archaeologists (Phil Rhatz, C. A. Raleigh Radford, and Leslie Alcock) whose ground-breaking (excuse the pun) discoveries have greatly illuminated our understanding of the Arthurian age (5th and 6th centuries); and there is a good chapter on everyday life in the Arthurian age (food, fashion, etc.).

King Arthur For Kids
As a child, I immensely enjoyed reading this little book. Sure, it's not exactly an in-depth one on the oft-repeated tale of "the once and future king," and it doesn't even really tell us much about his life and times, but it's a nice one to pique the curiosity of young readers.

A good, fun start for kids interested in King Arthur.

A brief and accessible guide
This book is a good introduction and guide to the basic skills needed for any college humanities student. And it's not really limited to college humanities students -- I use it as a text for high school seniors, who have found it generally helpful and illuminating. One of the most helpful aspects of the book is the frank testimony of actual college students which is sprinkled through the chapters.

Arthur Biddle and Toby Fulwiler are colleagues at the University of Vermont, and they asked fellow instructors in the English department there to contribute chapters to this book, so there is a nice range of opinion and expertise. The book begins with a general overview of attitudes toward reading and writing in college, then continues with chapters on using journal writing (Fulwiler's favorite subject); reading fiction, poetry, and drama; and a brief overview of major schools of literary theory. The second part of the book is about writing, with chapters on writing critical essays, personal essays, essay tests, and research reports. All of the chapters are clear and concise, though at times more depth would have been helpful.

Overall, the book is the most direct, accessible, and affordable introduction to college reading and writing that I've seen.

The Real World of Sherlock Holmes: The True Crimes Investigated by Arthur Conan Doyle

Holmes Creator Turns Amateur Sleuth
As well as the creator of legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was also something of an amateur detective himself. This book explores the many cases he involved himself with, although in most of them his part is minimal. However, he did help with some memorable investigations - Jack the Ripper, Dr Crippen and the disappearance of Agatha Christie for starters.

Unlike Holmes, though, most of Doyle's observations proved inconclusive. As well as this, the authorities were sometimes loath to accept his findings, and the author, Peter Costello, implies that several innocents were executed for wont of incriminating evidence. Throughout Doyle's long career, though, his crusading nature and willingness to stand up for the truth are impressive attributes.

This book concerns itself with Doyle as Holmes creator only in passing. Here we see the author as an ever-inquisitive seeker of solutions to real-life crimes, a passion he later directed to the Victorian fad of Spiritualism. Indeed, there are some crimes he claimed to have solved through consultation with then-famous mediums. Costello wisely leaves judgement on this score up to the reader.

As an addendum to Doyle's more familiar literary achievements, this book serves it purpose well and provides many interesting insights into the Victorian and Edwardian crime scene.

Rare talent
I have been a fan of Red Skelton since a child watching him on the black & white TV. So when I had the opportunity to read this book, I jumped at it. Maybe I'm to big a fan and had Mr Skelton on a pedistal and was a little shocked by the content of this book. It was often hard for me to read some chapters. He was human and had frailities like all men. The book gave a great deal of detail to his struggling years, both professionaly and personally. There are many quotes from coworkers that show a different, behind-the-scenes Red Skelton. This man among clowns had a life quite different for what the public saw through televison. I'm just glad he surrived and became a master comedian.

Reformation in England to the Accession of Elizabeth I

An excellent Primary Source collection!
For anyone wanting to read primary documents of early journey of the English Reformation - this book is it. The book starts with the criticisms of the cleargy and Lollardy. While the impact of Lollardy has been overturned, those like myself find it refreshing to read of its supposed impact. The book continues through the Marian Reaction, yet lacks souces from the Elizabethan or Stuart period. To find the whole history of the Church of England's transition, it is imperative to combine this book with another of the late church and its final transformations. This work, however, gives an excellent background to understanding the Reformation and the Church.

Religious Bodies of America

Authors: Arthur C. Piepkorn and F. E. Mayer
Amazon base price: $26.99

Dated but detailed and fascinating
A detailed review of the American religious scene in the mid 20th Century. From a Lutheran perspective, this books offers history and theological reviews of major denominational groups and identifies the principles that guide the thinking of those groups (Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Orthodox and the sub-categories of Reformed Christianity as well as other groups such as Christian Science). While much of the information is dated, the summaries of religious strands of thinking are current and this is an effective survey of American religion as seen by a Lutheran.

Responsible Assertive Behavior: Cognitive/Behavioral Procedures for Trainers

Good for group leaders, not for individuals
I borrowed this book from my supervisor at work to use to teach some assertiveness skills to other co-workers. Lange (a key figure in assertiveness training in the 70's) does a very good job in laying out the differences in assertive and "unassertive" behavior. The main slant of the book, however, is towards leaders in assertiveness skills training groups, and outlines many activities for groups. Parts of the book are appropriate for individuals wanting to improve assertiveness skills, but they might be better served by another book.
