A fine study marred by a silly contradictory postscript
The author certainly knows his stuff, citing some truly obscure passages from one of the most prolific writers in the Western canon. His overall conclusion is that Erasmus was not at all anti-Semitic in the modern meaning of the word. Erasmus was certainly unsympathetic to Jewish religion, and often used it as an example of egregious formalism that should be avoided in Christianity. One of his favorite phrases was "a more than Jewish ceremonialism". One converted Jew, a vitriolic critic and unrelenting persecutor one of Erasmus' associates, so angered Erasmus that, in one letter, he lashed out against the fellow in terms that would embarass us. Yet this is counterbalanced by a great many statements spread over many years insisting that the Jews should be treated fairly and as humans, that the only Christian course of action was to tolerate and preach to them. The book is badly marred by an afterward contributed by Arthur A Cohen, who disregards the mass of data that Markish presents and flatly declares that "Erasmus is no street anti-Semite...but he is surely within a great tradition of contempt... that leads straight to the death camps." Given the massive and carefully documented evidence that Markish presents, Cohen's undocumented diatribe adds only an ugly chunk of posturing political correctness to an otherwise scholarly book. And yes, Markish is Jewish.

Short but deep
Holmes packs a lot into a short space. Undergraduate students have found it a bit heavy going, but for those willing to work through the text, it is profoundly insightful. A great introduction to various ethical philosophies in the West, their strengths and their shortcomings, with some chapters that apply the principles to specific ethical issues. The book is 17 years old but has a timelessness about it - unlike, say, John Stott's "Issues Facing Christians". Holmes does not give "current statistics" and tends to operate at the level of principle, which gives his work a helpful timelessness. Worth having on the shelf if you are a reader.

Europe After Democracy
This is probably the "easiest" read on The Book of Revelation I have read in years. Reverend Brown, discusses the first nineteen chapters of Revelation. The book is in agreement with many others as to the menaings of some of the symbolism found in the scriptures. However, where this book really shines is in the idea that the letter to the seven churches is a prophetic picture of the church age. Historical background is utilized that cements Rev. Brown's position.

It should also be noted that Rev. Brown feeels that Isreal is the focal point of the Book of Revelation (a point I fully endorse). In other words, people who feel that the Church has replaced Isreal as the chosen people may not agree with the concept presented, but I feel they should still read this book.

Rev. Brown uses Scripture in correct context.

I would strongly recommend thi book for any student of the Word of God.

Small, Simple, but Worthy
This book journeys back into biblical times, where the reader may learn about ancient customs, jobs, food, and furnishings of the Old and New Testaments. Now in its third edition, Concordia Publishing House first published this book in 1947 as part of the Concordia Leadership Training Series. Later, in 1959, Dr. Klinck revised the first edition (therefore, the 2nd edition). Now in this 3rd edition, Dr. Kiehl has revised the text, bringing it up to date.

Each chapter of the text list dozens of specific Bible references, which will aid any reader from pastor to layperson. Also included in this little gem are simple line drawings and illustrations that show commonly used equipment, materials, structures, and raw goods. Last, the text includes review questions and exercises at the end of each chapter, which may or may not be used to increase biblical knowledge and strengthen the chapters' lessons.

An account of the loss of 'the true' in the West
In a very brief work , the author lays down an account of the ontological cause of liberal evasion so often evident in current western thought, political institutions and actions. The basis of value is ontology (the fact) and teleology (the source of value) which flows from that fact. The author manages to do elucidate the loss of grounding in being and Gods' Being from a historical perspective. God bless his cotton socks!

An Old Family Favorite
I remember having these Fairy Tales read to me at bedtime when I was little. I bought the same book to read to my son. The stories are bit anachronistic and may not meet modern standards of being politically correct, but we love them anyway.

Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm

Collector's Edition
Philip has faithfully translated this collection of the Grimm Brothers' anthology of oral folktales. He has chose to include twenty of the classic German tales in this beautiful edition. Hardcover, with gilted pages, and metallic highlights in the illustrations creates a very stunning picture. Philip has selected some of the most well known favorites, but also a few that modern times have forgotten. The reading level is approximately third grade, though the stories look as though they would be better understood and more entertaining if read aloud. There tends to be just one illustration per story. While they are wonderfully done and framed with more artwork, they don't do much to tell the plot of the story and are not always matched up with the text. Every classroom should have a collection of Grimm's fairy tales, but this isn't the one. This book seems to have been designed more for collectors and to sit on a shelf than to be handled by youngsters on a daily basis in a classroom environment.

Why 4 stars?:
This is not a book to be read, but one to be collected and set upon a shelf to collect dust. The illustrations are beautiful and the information provided about the tales and the brothers is excellent. However, this book was not made for children to read their favorite tales from.

Falsehood in Wartime: Propaganda Lies of the First World War
Published in Paperback by Inst for Historical Review (December, 1991)
Authors: Arthur Ponsonby and Mark Weber
Amazon base price: $6.95
Used price: $25.00

The book is good, but beware the publisher.
This is an interesting little book, originally written in the 1920's by an English Member of Parliament about the propoganda lies that were rampant during World War I. Unfortunately, there is also a rather frightening introduction from the current publisher, which is one of those holocaust denial organizations, who seem to follow the twisted logic that if one atrocity story is a lie, they all are. Ignore it. The atrocity stories from World War I were investigated and found to be lies. The atrocity stories from World War II were investigated and found to be true, as evidenced by millions of witnesses, survivors, etc.
