Very good literature review but insufficient analysis.
Very good literature review but insufficient meaningful analysis. The book proivides some sage wisdom on being a better manger. It is most appropriate for an upper division (not graduate) course in leadership. However, it does not provide the depth of understanding that I would expect from a text book.

Noah & the ark : the influence of sex, homophobia & heterosexism in the flood story and its writing
Published in Unknown Binding by Monument Press ()
Author: Arthur Frederick Ide
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A Mixed Review ....
Ide's little volume contains nothing startling for anyone who is very well acquainted with the principles of literary criticism as it applies to the Hebrew Bible. Its strength is to be found in the fact that it makes the insights of such criticism readily available in a small volume that can be read in just an hour or less. But the weakness of the volume is that it presupposes a great deal of familiarity with the topic. Ide also jumps to some conclusions a bit hastily for my taste. Nonetheless, he is correct in his thesis that sexuality plays a major role in the development of the great flood myth found in Genesis.

How can you make Paris dull? Here's how...
I was tricked into buying this book. It is being marketed as a general history of Paris for the traveler or Francophile. Unfortunately, it reads much more like someone's masters thesis. As such, it brings with it all the usual problems of academic writing. Here is a sample sentence:

"In perfect anthithesis to this, phantasmagoria was an ideological mechanism of exclusion."

Sadly, there's lots more where that came from. This book was not written to entertain, inspire, or inform the reader; it was written to promote the author's erudition.

If you're looking for a general history of Paris, I'm sure there are many other options that are more readable.

Reader's Digest Bible
Cohen has essentially edited the bible to a reader's digest type form. This does make it easy to read all the best-known bible stories quickly, but it also robs the bible of most of its granduer, poetry, force, and chill-producing effect. Just take the time to read the real thing instead.

Nothing new here - a shallow view we have seen before.
This is the third book on the work of Philippe Starck to be released this year and, regrettably, the weakest. This slim volume offers only a glossy overview of Starck's most recent and most popular works in product and interior design. The phographs used all appear in previous books on the subject and the layout (by Simon Mercer) is a watered down version of the layout (by Mark Thomson) for Tashen's 1996 "Starck" from their "big book series". Although Ms. Carmel-Arthur's essay makes several references to Philippe Starck's architectural projects, none are illustrated here.

The book jacket tells us that Judith Carmel-Arthur is a teacher at Kingston University in London where she is also working toward her PHD in Design History. Perhaps this explains why her thirteen-page essay reads more like an uninspired college term paper then the introduction to a book on one of the most exciting designers of our time. Aside from being a simply boring read, it offers no insight into the works presented or their creator. In addition, the essay contains several mistakes in details pertaining to manufactures and attributions. In the essay, Ms. Carmel-Arthur takes a pointed stab at previous books on the works of Starck which have relied heavily on interviews with the designer for the majority of their text. Ironicly, her point is made mute by the layout in which the text is seeded with Philippe Starck quotes printed in bold letters four-times the size of that used for the body of the essay. This has the effect of making the reader flip through the essay, stopping to only to read the enlarged Starck quotes. (Not necessarily a bad thing.) The last three pages of the essay are an unabashed advertisement for Mr. Starck's most recent commercial venture.

If you have other books on the works of Philippe Starck then you will not need this one - nothing new here. If you are looking for a book on his works - keep looking - there's not enough here. I would suggest this book only for children who might respond to the large photos and the comfortable small size of the book.

Relatos De Diez Mundos/Tales of Ten Worlds

Slow and almost unimaginative.
A collection of sci-fi stories. All of which are dated , writen in an old style without any action OR science. It's all about satelite problems and stuff like that in the 21th century.

I'm not saying that it was'nt good when it was relevent as sci-fi , but those stories are just not the kind that lasts forever. And anyway Clarke's writing was always WAY too slow for me. He's just not part of the real mindblowers generation of sci-fi - A pioneer , but not an immortall giant , in my opinion.

For a better read of the old fellows , read A.E.Van-Vogt , Heinlin , or E.E.Smith (Lensmen series).

Russell on Ethics: Selections from the Writings of Bertrand Russell (Russell on)

Don't bother reading this book.
I think "Bert" is a brilliant man and a terrific author, but most (if not all) of the essays in this book are really dry and uninteresting. The best part of the book was Bertrand's discussion of what the word "should" means. He concludes that "should" in most instances mearly means that if you do x, someone specific would approve. For example, "you should be kind to others" means nothing more than "if you are kind to others, those people will experience a feeling of approval regarding your actions." Other than that, the book was pretty painful to read. I recommend Why I Am Not A Christian or Unpopular Essays instead. I give this book 2 stars because nobody should ever give Bertrand Russell one star (if you did, he would disapprove!)

Rimbaud the Great in a Poor Translation
Rimbaud's crackling poetic prose and gorgeous poetry is full of inventive energy in French: in this translator's English, it is flat, stilted, awkward and energyless. If you read French, the book's OK, because you have the original on facing pages. But if you read French, why buy this?
