Art of Heraldry

The Fundamental Volume!
This is the most comprehensive volume about heraldry that I have ever seen, and likely no others surpass it. The text takes readers through topics English heraldry and provides numerous examples of where English heraldry and Continental heraldry deviate. Fox-Davies provides pages of rich insight into every major and minor topic of heraldry up to the time of printing, from bearing and displaying arms to supporters and mottoes. Fox-Davies accounts the history of standards and charges, paying attention to both the commonplace and the novel. Figures and color plates provide vivid examples of both elements and complete coats, and all are explained in detail. Often the captions or text will point out details related to topics other than the one for which the example has been presented. The writing is very dense, proving difficult for me to follow even with some experience in heradic literature. Beginners should not start here. This book is also very large and, because it was written in the early 1900s, slightly dated. But for the researcher or heraldic collector, this classic by Fox-Davies is a must-own.

THE book on British Heraldry
This is probably the most valuable source-book for British heraldry to have been published, covering nearly all aspects of the art in Britian and giving substantial coverage to continental European heraldry as well. Every serious heraldist should have a copy.

Essential Reading For All Wind Players
"The Art of Wind Playing" is written by one of the great bassoonists and masters of wind playing, Arthur Weisberg. Mr. Weisberg presents the physical principles of sound production on wind instruments and then shows how these principles can be utilized to produced more artistic performances. Though Mr. Weisberg is known as a bassoonist, his examples transfer easily to all wind instruments. The book presents technical concepts in a manner that is approachable to most readers. Highly recommended to any performer or teacher who wants to improve his/her wind playing skills and musical artistry.

This Book Does Work
After checking ARTHRITIS: WHAT EXERCISES WORK out of the library for the third time in a year, I broke down and bought it. It's terrific. The exercises are tied to specific joints, ranging from the small, fingers and toes, on to shoulders, hips, knees, etc. Some you can even do in bed, but many are much more challenging--there is a range. Doing these for just a couple of weeks increased my flexibility tremendously--washing my back, tieing my shoes, and so forth much easier. And I'm a 53 year old professional female who is in "good shape" with aerobics and strength training--but the targeted flexibility/joint exercises here were new to me. I highly, highly recommend.

Arthur The King: The Theme Behind the Legends
From the DJ back cover: "Who was King Arthur? Variously depicted as the boy who drew the sword from the stone, Celtic freedom fighter pitted against the invading Saxons, and refined and noble monarch married to the beautiful Queen Guenever [sic], he has for centuries inspired storytellers of Europe.

Graeme Fife traces the development of Arthurian literature from its emergence in the mist-filled valleys of the Celtic heartlands of Britain to the candle-lit-banqueting halls of the court of Eleanor of Aquitaine. He examines the great Arthurian themes of chivalry, courtly love, hunting, heraldry and pageantry, magic and the Holy Grail and argues convincingly that the rise of the romances was inextricably linked to the development of the Christian Crusading movement. Ever present is the immortal figure of Arthur himself, once and future king.

Just thought you should know something about the book you are thinking about buying.
Actually a very interesting book.

My daughter loves this whole series
This series of books is so consistently good that I automatically order each one as soon as it's available. #21 keeps up the tradition. My daughter (just turned 8) loves it, as she has the previous 20. The only difference from the beginning of the series to the present, is that now she has to read each chapter to me before I'll read it to her. She's always excited when Marc Brown releases a new book.

A nice lesson in fairness
Francine learns that it isn't always sheer physical skill that makes a good team - strategy is important. The gang also takes some time to think about how it feels to be the last one picked for a team - you know that feeling. Never sappy but engaging, a good story in a great series. Stephen Krensky has done a good job with these books. Why is it that Marc Brown's name is on the cover?

It's D.W.! And a Gerbil! Lots to Love.
This one is titled as an Arthur story, but it's really D.W. who steals the show. She's asked to take care of a preschool pet, a gerbil named Speedy, over the Christmas holiday. (A situation that may be familiar to many readers.) Although Arthur's helpful to her, he also discourages her idea of teaching the gerbil tricks. But this doesn't stop D.W.! In addition to the good, original story, the book also includes wonderful illustrations and dedicated readers will be able to spot the name of at least one of Marc Brown's children. Recommended for Arthur fans and a must for D.W. fans.
