Critical Care Medicine: The Essentials
Published in Paperback by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (May, 1989)
Authors: John J. Marini and Arthur P. Wheeler
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Excellent approach to ICU pathophysiology, treatments
An excellent discussion of ICU/Critical Care Medicine pathophysiology and management approaches for principally the housestaff/junior fellow level. Chapters are pertinent and understandable. Does a good job of avoiding the tendency toward "cookbook" medicine found in several other CCM texts written at this level. End of chapter summaries are excellent. Focus is on developing understanding of key physiologic/pathophysiologic concepts and how they relate to monitoring, management, etc. rather than focusing on procedures and techniques. Should be the text of choice for medicine critical care rotations early in training as it really develops the appropriate foundation.

Fresh perspective on Western philosophy
Very well written book that provides a sweeping, fresh perspective on the whole history of philosophy including formal logic and the mythology of higher mathematics. Of particular note is his treatment of Wittgenstein, especially how his internalized homophobia might have colored his views.

Excellent Teacher resource
James Martine clarifys the important points that need to be conveyed to the high school student. He will also bring clarity to the teacher struggling for the best way into the play. Particularly useful are ideas about John Proctor as a tragic hero. Twayne publishes consistently solid criticism for the high school teacher and serious student.

Chilling and emotional
This film manages to be chilling and haunting without being classified as such a film. The subject is one of immortal controversy, of a religion that has been debated about from the beginning of time: witchcraft. Women were mistakenly burnt, being accused of practicing witchcraft, which in reality is a more peaceful and earth-rejoicing religion than most others, though most people wouldn't have you aware of that. Women were stripped, hanged, burnt and mamed in front of all the village people. I myself have read much on the religion and that contributed all the more to my disturbance but pure enjoyment in watching this film. One of the times I watched it I started crying. It's so sad the trials and hysteria that took place. The people who were under the illusion they were doing God's work, when really they were killing innocent people. Sad. The film has a tremendous script, solid directing and excellent, spooky acting. A great thanks to the camera angles in contributing to the overall haunting feeling of this film. A chilling and emotional experience.

Critspeak made easy
This is an excellent book for beginners who want some sort of a road map into the intricate territory of cultural criticism. Not only is most of the critspeak that is around almost intractably obscure,at times you almost wonder if these chaps write in English at all. For those of you who have thrown up your hands in despair after your fortieth attempt to read Derrida and his ilk.. and you have no clue at all as to what these guys are talking about..(Of course, with Derrida one can't loosely use such words as 'Talking' unless you want to be deconstructed within an inch of your life) Do not despair! You can atleast begin here. With extraordinary lucidity and sparkling intelligence,Berger takes us on a guided tour of the whole crit theory pantheon....Marxism,Semiotics..to mention a few.A stimulating read. A must-buy for beginners..Run out and get your copy!

Curriculum As Conversation: Transforming Traditions of Teaching and Learning

If we're talking then the curriculum is alive
In this quick read, Applebee suggests that when considering curriculum, educators think about the role of conversation. Without a need for real, deep, meaningful conversation around unanswered intriguing questions, curriculum is dead. All too frequently curriculum rests in a set of standards, benchmarks and already answered questions which are asked to the learner. If the questions already have answers why ask them? This book asks the fundamental question, how do we design learning contexts in which learners are invited into the conversations that are taking place between experts in any field of study. When we invite students to wrestle with these questions we are including them in authentic learning experiences because they, like the experts must engage in the struggle to find a solution to an unanswered question. What could be more inspirational?

My 3 year old son loves these planes!
These are colorful and imaginatively designed paper airplanes. All you need to assemble them are sissors, glue, and paper clips. Assembly is straightforward. Now, the planes won't win any contest for distance in flying. They often don't fly in a straight line. But my 3 year old boy loves them. He loves it when Daddy builds an airplane for him. They fly, and even fly after getting beat up by a 3-year old's play. Just think, 8 airplanes for $5. What a great deal. I gave these these to my son at Christmas and have built 4 already (3 months later). I suggest you don't build them all at once. Space them out as treats. I highly recommend these!

Refreshing Historical Analysis
This novel is yet another classic by Schlesinger. I enjoyed it emmensly for a variety of reasons. First, Schlesinger makes his novel appeling to both the avid history fan, student of history, and teacher of history, thus allowing everyone to understand his work. Furthermore, Schlesinger explains his work in using his every present political shrewdness aswell as dry wit. This is a refreshing change from the dry unending style of many historians. The major points explained in this work are the cycling of American politics and its effects on the past, present, and future. This gives it an even more universal quality which even students of politics can appreciate.
