John Porter Houston strays from the usual in this wonderfully written book. Most other authors deal only with the poets lives and works in a trivial and banal manner, treating the poets as precocious and intoxicated. It is refreshing to finally find a book that reviews their legacies in terms of cultural and philosophical currents in a diverse and lucid manner. Included are reviews of selections of their work with the original french and the authors own intelligent translations. I highly recomend this book to any serious student of either Rimbaud or Mallarme as one of the few available which is both entertaining and thought provoking.

A general view of the civilizations of the classical era, roughly from 550 BC to 500 AD. Sufficiently general to cover the period and the civilizations within a nicely printed 275 page book, yet with sufficient detail of life to interest the reader and draw him into the author's portrayal of those worlds.

Enjoyable and well written with numerous maps, line drawings, and color plates.

Very concise and complete. Excellent b/w line drawings - a pity the artist is not credited. Could use more photographs, esp. in color, but nonetheless an extremely useful reference work.

What's to say? This is a required text for many personal financial planning or investing curricula, and it delivers what it promises. It is very thorough. Also extremely up to date on ever-changing topics such as online investing or folio baskets. My only bone with this book is that it assumes the reader is 19 years old and does some talking down. Otherwise a useful introduction to a broad topic.

Arthur Danto raises many interesting points to help understand art today. In many cases his ideas are very insightful. It made me wonder about what came first, Danto's ideas, or the artist's ideas as revealed in their work?

Strawson was an important Oxford philosopher. His highly influential books: Introduction to Logical Theory, Freedom and Resentment, Bounds of Sense, and Individuals have caused more than a generation of students to consider his important views.

This is an interesting anthology of articles and replies. Some of the more important articles here deal with Strawson's views in the philosophy of language (namely speech act theory) and in metaphysics.

Pittsburgh Then and Now is one of the best pictoral historical books around. Everybody knows about the history of steel in Pittsburgh but few know about its local history. This book is one that tells both stories. The pictures shown range from the steel mills of the Pittsburgh area, to the different steps of the city. Each picture of the past is contrasted with a picture of the present.

During each scene there is a brief explaination about the history of the change, although each picture could easily be explained in more detail. Even though these explainations may not be in great depth they help you to decide what area of history you may want to research, such as the steel mills, the north side, or the bridges.

This book is one that I would recommend to anyone who would like to see the history of Pittsburgh. Each picture gives you a feeling of what many long time residents of Pittsburgh viewed during its change.
