The Thames and Hudson manual of bookbinding

A "Must Have" Book for the Serious Bookbinder
Of the many popular books in print today on bookbinding, this one is by far the most comprehensive. It reads like a graduate level textbook and must be studied carefully; it isn't conducive to casual reading. Many of the sentences are difficult to understand and must be thought about for awhile to figure out. Nevertheless, I wouldn't want to undertake a new step in the binding process without first reading what this book has to say. I strongly recommend it for the serious student of bookbinding.

A very good instruction manual
This book describes in clear detail how to properly bind a book for maximum durability. It includes details on case bindings (the easiest and weakest), library bindings (one of the strongest), flexible and sunk-cord bindings (traditional), and limp bindings. Although the author makes much about having the right tools, his descriptions are clear enough that one can improvise. With this book, I was able to make a book from paper, boards, and leather that came out quite well on my first try.

Classic essays on the nature of drama
These collected essays, first published in such periodicals as The New York Times, The New York Herald Tribune, or Atlantic Monthly, trace the origins of modern drama in Greek tragedy and comedy. At least four of them should be required reading in any introductory course in British and American literature: The Salesman Has A Birthday; Tragedy And The Common Man; The Nature Of Tragedy; and The Family In Modern Drama. The last of these contains a memorable phrase that furnished the title of the selection of the late U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl's essays, At Home In The World. One brief quotation from Tragedy And The Common Man that seems especially relevant to the present era will suffice: "The Greeks could probe the very heavenly origin of their ways and return to confirm the rightness of laws."

Wonderful compilation of Miller's thoughts
This book is an incredible trip through out Miller's ideas. The essays on the book are very well selected and disposed in a good way for the readers to understand what Arthur Miller is all about. There's no better way to know somebody other than this persons' own words. And this is what's so special about this book. We get to know Arthur Miller through his own special words. The first essay, "Tragedy and the Common Man" is already classical for its contents. Most of the books about Arthur Miller talk about it, but this very book happens to be the only way for us to actually read the whole text. Summing up: if you're willing to go to the bootom of this very important writer, this is the book you must choose.

A collection of poems that embraces the complexity of life.
Simply Marvelous, This Time Again shows the familiar examples and routinely experiences of our life. Spoken through his poetic words, one can easily understand the seriousness and the plight of our communities. The author's candor talks in alt about our cultural ailments and the experienced fragility of our emotional tenderness. Intelligently communicated, the depth of his words has reached and has spoken to me honestly

This book is written with extraordinary passion and beauty!
Through the genius of F. Arthur Jones you experience an evolution of spirit. "This Time Again" is filled with intense passion, intimacy, sensuality, love, hurt and pain. I especially enjoyed "Times of Reversals". Most people have experiened a roll reversal in their life , whether it involved matters of the heart or other aspects of life. The strong sometimes become weak, and the powerless sometime become powerfull. This poem touches you and causes you to think about those times. In the poem "The Land must be Seasoned" the author expresses a sense of political and social awareness of yesterdays and todays issues. This was very well written. "Cracker Boy" makes every mother want to grab ahold of her young son and never let go. I have read this book serveral times and each time discovering and understanding something new. This is a must read for all. I would recommend it to all poetry lovers and those who normally don't read poetry. It's a beautiful and powerful book!

The Bestest Book Ever
Hi, I loved this book! It is about a little ,curious boy who gets lost. He gets lost during the 4th of July parade. The 3 investigators are looking everywhere in Venice(the police too)where Bob's report brought them. Pete encounters a shark underwater. This book is not about a live mermaid.I thougt this book was going to be horrible!!The kids dog is found dead in the trash can!!I LOVED THIS BOoK!!

The Mystery of the Missing Mermaid
I really enjoyed this book because I had a hard time on deciding on who was the bad guy. The characters also teased each other so you feel sorry for one, but good when he got the other back. I really don't see why anybody can rate this book a one. I highly recommend this book to you even if it's below your reading level! It makes me want to read all of The Three Investigators books!

Timberline and a Century of Skiing on Mount Hood
Published in Paperback by Whitefish Editions (December, 1998)
Author: Jean Arthur
Amazon base price: $15.95
Used price: $10.97
Average review score:

Great memories of living at Mt Hood & working at Timberline.
Wow-This was so cool to flip through the pages and read the stories of all the people who have had special ties to Mt Hood and Timberline. Knowing some of the characters only made it more fun. I can pick up this book and virtually turn to any page and enjoy its content. I never knew so many important things and fun times happened in the ski industry at Mt Hood.

Comprehensive, entertaining, and absorbing
In a well-researched production, Jean Arthur interviewed an endless parade of folks who were involved in making history on Mt. Hood, and delved into thousands of pages of archived history. It's obvious that playing and working on the slopes of this Cascade volcano left the author thirsting for the background of how it became a world-famous winter recreational playground and the extent of its gifts to the evolution of skiing.

The book includes lots of little-known facts and keeps up a nice pace as it unfolds over a hundred years of recorded skiing on Mt. Hood. The exploits of early snow-play folks are interwoven with the development of lift-served summer skiing, experiments with various uphill conveyances, racing and jumping competitions, and the chronicles of the building, rescue and refurbishment of historic Timberline Lodge.

You'll encounter escapades with snowcats and crevasses, hilarious trail races, and the task of managing prodigious dumps of snow. Anecdotes about many of the world-class skiers and competitors who have played and trained on Mt. Hood's slopes are interlaced with some general history of the sport of skiing. Jean relates many first-hand stories, and the entire book is extremely well illustrated with photos from a number of collections and many items of related memorabilia.

Whether or not you've personally sampled the delights of her trails, Mt. Hood has contributed a rich history to the sports of skiing and snowboarding, and it is portrayed very eloquently in this book. An entire mountain range of kudos to Ms. Arthur!!

A useful reference work for teachers of American History
We all know that every American History textbook leaves out lots of important events, people, and things that may well be worth knowing. "The Timetables of American History" is a very useful reference work for those teaching/learning about American History because if you are studying something big like the Civil War or something relatively small like the Scopes Trial, this book shows you what was happening at the same time in science, art and politics. This book can be useful in providing topics for bulletin boards or student reports on any period in American History you happen to be covering. If your history book does not tell you what scientific inventions were developed during the Great Depression, what Americans were reading during the Vietnam War, or who the greatest painter of the early 19th century in the United States, then this is the book you want to add to your reference collection.

The Timetables of American History, updated edition
A wonderfully concise look at American History in respect to other happenings around the globe. I read this book at our local library and was so impressed with it that I decided to order it from Amazon.com!

Tudor Hall : The Boisseau family farm
Published in Unknown Binding by Dietz Press ()
Author: Arthur W. Bergeron
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A Good Book
This book traces the history of the Tudor Hall Plantation, owned by the William Boisseau family of Dinwiddie County, Virginia. It details how William began and operated a profitable tobacco farm and how his son, Joseph, switched from tobacco to other crops as the land became worn out. A part of the Tudor Hall story is the occupation of the plantation during the latter part of the Petersburg Campaign by Brigadier General Samuel McGowan's South Carolina brigade. McGowan used the home as his headquarters during that winter, and his men constructed earthwork fortifications across the farm. Lieut. J. F. J. Caldwell, one of McGowan's aides, began writing a history of the brigade while living in Tudor Hall. In late March 1865, McGowan's men were sent elsewhere and were replaced by troops of Brigadier General James H. Lane's North Carolina brigade. The Union Sixth Corps attacked and overran these trenches on the morning of April 2, 1865, in what is known as The Breakthrough. This battle led Robert E. Lee to order the evacuation of Richmond and Petersburg. Tudor Hall was ruined as a money-making farm because of the war, and Joseph Boisseau sold it in 1869 to Asahel Gerow, who had moved to Dinwiddie from New York. The land is now the site of Pamplin Historical Park and The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier.

Breaks New Ground
This is the first book that focuses on the history of an upper class family of Dinwiddie County, Virginia. It describes how the Boisseau family acquired and built Tudor Hall, how they operated their plantation in the years before the Civil War, and what happened to the property during the Petersburg Campaign.

Although labelled out of print, this book is available from Pamplin Historical Park in Petersburg, Virginia.

Tutt and Mr Tutt
Published in Hardcover by Amereon Ltd (June, 1979)
Author: Arthur Train
Amazon base price: $25.95
Used price: $8.39
Collectible price: $18.95
Average review score:

An excellent and entertaining collection of stories.
Train offers here a fine set of stories about a caring and cantankerous lawyer from the turn of the century. Other books about Tutt include 'Tut,Tut, Mr. Tutt', 'Old Man Tutt' and the autobiographical, "Yankee Lawyer".

Excellent collection of short stories.
The elderly Mr Tutt and his junior partner Tutt spend their time defending the downtrodden innocent (and occasionally the guilty - but they'll never admit it - at least to the judge) and making the most rascally prosecutors and lawyers look like the fools they are. A highly entertaining set of short stories, with many interesting legal tidbits (many of which, I suspect, no longer are true). The author was a lawyer himself, and has created the most interesting protagonist since the Saint (or more properly, before the Saint). Highly recommended.
