CAN'T GO WRONG
Just back from the Yucatan and found this guide very helpful. easy to read and the descriptions of the food and lodging were reliable.

I also recommend: "A Tourist in the Yucatan" a thriller/adventure. A good read while you are soaking rays on the beach!

cancun/cozumel
Basically the book was great. However, I had my map to the area stolen. And would like to purchase or receive another. I am planning another trip to cancun in late march 2001. This time we are going to drive on our own, and i think that map is invaluable.

Excellent and fascinating guide
This is an excellent guide to the Yucatan region, from hotels to ruins, it is well written and informative. We plan a vacation to the area this year and this book will be with me at all times! This book is a better value than a private tour guide. Tips on everything we will need to know, good and bad, are in this book.

Convenient,, 25 Great Itinerary Choices, Easy to Use...
Sometimes in life you want to go in a circle and "Frommer's Italy's Best-Loved Driving Tours" helps you do just that.

I was going to be in Italy for two weeks, half of which I would be in Venice, floating in gondolas with my girlfriend, eagerly explaining to her why my voice sounds like Dean Martian's when signing "Amore" but the wind and the slap of the gondoliers paddle made me sound different, really. She didn't by it either.

With two weeks in Italy, one by train and the second in an Audi, I used "Frommer's Italy's Best-Loved Driving Tours" to travel through the Alps and Lake District in Northern Italy.

Though not my only guide, it was the "big picture" guide that allowed my preliminary planning.

You can select from twenty-five great itinerary loops that cover Italy from the Italian Alps to the tip of the boot. Each has a map that highlights a half a dozen to dozen places that are unforgettable.

Good maps (although not detailed) and enticing site descriptions kept this book in use throughout my driving tour. Recommended.

GREAT! for a driving holiday "off the beaten track"
This book is perfect if you are planning a driving vacation around Italy (or parts of it) and would like to get away from the touristy centers like Venice, Rome, Florence, etc. It doesn't even cover those major cities, but does provide a wealth of other suggested places to visit, which were relatively quiet and tourist-free, even at the end of August. We just returned from a 6-day visit, and rather than complete any single tour from the book (they're typically 3-4 days each), simply selected sections of the itineraries that fit into our timeframe and location.

2 things to note: this book does NOT provide any listings for places to stay, so you will need another resource (I found several excellent country inns on the Web.) Also, while detailed maps of each tour are included, you will also need a good roadmap or atlas of Italy, esp. if you will be visiting more than one part of the country.

If you only buy one guide book for Italy, buy this one.
This was the most helpful guide book I used on what to do and see in Italy. The pictures were helpful, and the routes they suggested included wonderful places that I would have overlooked. It doesn't include where to eat/stay, but it's terrific on what to see while you're there.

One book for the traveller who likes comfort
I write this on my return from my first trip to Mexico. What I liked most about this book is that each suggestion was exactly as it was described - eg if a hotel was luxurious, it was; if an attraction was not rated with a "must see" star, it wasn't a "Must-see". The other book brought was a Lonely Planet guide - also very helpful, but generally for a slightly more roughing-it traveller. The safety tips were also spot on, and the photos make you want to visit many more places than you have originally planned for! I think if you are a midscale traveler, this is the right book for you.

Better each year
Frommer's Mexico improves with each passing year. The descriptions are ever-more complete and the writing sharp. One of the authors even has a sense of humor. If you take one book on your trip to Mexico, this should be it.

The one book for Mexico.
I've been travelling in Mexico upwards of 30 years, have seen all of the guide books, and in my opinion, Frommer's is the best. You really don't need another guide book for Mexico. Here's why:

Terrific walking guides. Excellent choice of restaurants in all price ranges. Ditto, hotels. Very good historical information. Although there is so much to see in Mexico, if you just follow the recommendations in this guide, you'll experience the best that Mexico has to offer.

And, I would recommend picking up the Mexico City book as well if you're planning to spend a lot of time in the capital.

Not as scary as I expected however it was quite interesting.
Arthur Myers, if you read this our little town is full of ghosts. Historic New Castle, DE is where we're located and if your ever in the area it's definitely worth a stop!!! I am a huge "fan" of ghosts and even though I've never seen one I do believe they exist.

Throw another log on the fire, sit back, and enjoy.
For a book of ghost stories to be worth its weight in salt it has to start out with a good writer. One who weaves his stories so as to draw the reader into the ghostly realm. Arthur Myers is up to this task and his writing style is very pleasing.

In this book the reader will find well documented ghost sightings that come to us from all over the United States. One finds in the pages of this book weeping portraits, poltergeists, and a New York ghost who plays Mozart. In an interesting departure from the norm in this type of book Mr. Myers divides each chapter up into catagories. First, there is simply enough the location and description of the haunt. Next one finds a history of the the place in question including a worldly history and the history of the manifestations. Near the conclusion of the chapter Myers attempts to identify the spirit and its personality. I guess ghosts have personalities. Finally he tells us if the place is still haunted, the best time to experence the haunt, who the witnesses have been, who submitted the story to him, and if there has been a formal psychic investigation. The ghostly manifestations section will often send a distinct chill up the readers spine. At least in my case it did.

If you love this type of book or if you are just looking for something to read in front of the fire on a cool October night this book would be a good choice.

Ghostly American Places
Really good book. Havnt read it!

It's Tuesday--This Must Be Deconstruction
There is nothing wrong with encouraging students to encounter literature from a variety of viewpoints and any worthy English teacher of literature should be adept in reinforcing this skill. In this respect, Appleman's book shows merit. She outlines approaches for teaching the literary theories of Reader-Response, Marxism, Feminism, and Deconstruction, with (ad nauseum) student responses and sample handouts. And of course we walk in a world of categorization and theory, so writing about teaching literary theory is somewhat of a "no brainer" since our brain organizes information this way; without this skill, one could not survive. In short, she attempts to bring the theoretical world of the critics closer to younger students. Who can criticize that? Yet.... When I was reading her book, I kept thinking that this information might be handy for a certain teacher who lacks confidence in his or her own ability to respond directly to literature. Having the lenses is a great exercise, especially if one wants their students to show well on "Jeopardy." Yes, they are indispensible to know if one is in an English graduate program. Knowing them would also help one appear more erudite at a literary party. So teach the students literary theory. Then teach them to respond with their own hearts and minds; to read with passion, voraciously, discarding the inapplicable and acting with courage on the true. Teach them to underline their books (their OWN books, of course) simply because they found a beautiful sentence. Teach them to read the Introduction to the novel LAST, after they have had a chance to read and develop their OWN lense--their own viewpoints. This takes greater courage, I believe. Students need to THINK the page. Robert Frost once said that "education in English is properly a slow process of just staying around in the right company till you can speak and handle a book in the author's presence without setting his teeth on edge" (as quoted in George Anderson's "Bread Loaf School of English: The First Fifty Years, Middlebury: Middlebury Press, 1969, p. 33).

Great book for beginning English teachers
I'm going to be a first year teacher and ordered the paperback version of this book because I've heard Appleman talk about how useful literary "lenses" are to helping students interpret a text in many different ways. Like Eagleton says, every teacher does "theory", it's just a matter if they want to come clean about it or not. Having the students think about narrating the story from another perspective is what Appleman is all about. Using Appleman's "lenses" (feminist, marxist, etc) will definitely help give me more flexiblity in lessons and most importantly I won't be bored reading 150 papers all working from the same static interpretation. The poetry section of this book is incredible. When she discusses poetry, it's all about how all kids can have the same poem but things pop out different to tehm. You can use her methods to discuss what poetry really is. If you one of the many public high school English Lit teachers that has been teaching for many years and believes there is ONE and only ONE WAY to interpret a piece of literature, this book is not for you...but it OUGHTA BE!!

Newest "Must Read" for English Teachers
Book Review Appleman, Deborah. Critical Encounters in High School English: Teaching Literary Theory to Adolescents. New York: Teachers College Press, 2000. Deborah Appleman's book, Critical Encounters in High School English: Teaching Literary Theory to Adolescents, recently published by the National Council of Teachers of English and Teacher's College Press, is a MUST read for all English educators and all teachers of high school literature classes. Appleman not only envisions a new way of teaching high school literature, she shows the reader (with practical classroom activities) HOW this is possible. Appleman's first line, "I'm stubborn" (xiii), grabbed my immediate attention. As a friend of Deborah's, I agreed and read on. What I found was not a stubborn approach to teaching literature, but rather a wonderful, open-minded, newly articulated approach to the teaching of literary theory in high school. Granted, Appleman might need to stubbornly insist that naysayers, those who say it can't be done in high school, hear her out, but by mid-point in the book, even those people will be considering the possibilities. In Critical Encounters in High School English: Teaching Literary Theory to Adolescent Appleman defines reader response, Marxist and feminist criticism, and deconstruction theory in an understandable manner. Within each chapter Appleman weaves together, through classroom vignettes, literary theory and literature. Appleman explains how the application of literary theory in high school provides students with an interpretive repertoire which enlarges their view of the world. This approach empowers students to think "beyond the boundaries of their own comfortable world" (63) and to "foster a knowledge of others" (29). In addition to being impressed with the linkage of theory and practice in Appleman's book, I observed it in action when I visited Paige Shreeve's Senior-to-Sophomore literature class at Becker High School. Shreeve read Critical Encounters in High School English: Teaching Literary Theory to Adolescents the minute it was released. She then taught her class to apply these critical perspectives to the literature they read. The day I visited, the class discussed Frost's poetry. As I joined a small group discussion, I heard one student say, in reader response mode to "After Apple-Picking," "This tiredness is the way I feel after working a weekend at Subway." Another student, in keeping with a New Criticism approach, wanted to explore the symbolism of sleep. Yet another student, who apparently knew some background on Frost, told the group (using a psychological approach) that this poem was biographical and went on to explain why. These students were not directed by Shreeve to use literary theory; they had already internalized many aspects. Critical Encounters in High School English works. I suggest that you read and "try on" Deborah Appleman's new book. Chris Gordon English Education - St. Cloud State University

Witty, full of irony and plot twists.
It is a wonderful play which expertly portrays events which could have happened in old Salem. The ending is particuarly great!

it's great.
I have finished reading the Crucible - it is simply great. The text is wonderful, full of ironies and dramatic scenes - for example, the scene where Elizabeth lies for the first time in her life to save Proctor's reputation, only to realise that her good intentions have unwittingly helped Abigail. Land wars, revenge and a host of other reasons show us the repressed state Salem was in in those days. The relationships between the main characters : Proctor, Parris, Abigail, etc, were understandable and one could actually feel himself or herself praying that a particular character would survive the madness, or feel sympathy for even the villains. The Crucible was a great experience for me, and I hope that via this review many of you out there will go and buy this book to see what I mean.

Classic tale of witchcraft ..
I really enjoyed this play even though it was a class assignment. It gives you a feel of this huge chunk of our worlds history that no one can fully understand. I wasn't really into ready anything of this sort, but it was really cool. I liked it a lot :)

contains some good source photos of the era
I used this book to research Depression era clothing for a play and found the photos really intriguing and useful. I only wish there had been about 3 times more of them.

The work of the most famous photographer of the Dust Bowl
Arthur Rothstein became a photography at Columbia University where he met Roy Stryker, a professor economics. After graduation, Stryker hired Rothstein and others to document what became the Farm Security Administration. It was while working for the FSA that Rothstein became famous for his photographs of the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression, including the famous shot of the family running to their half buried home in the dust storm. Ironically, one of his other famous images, of a cow skull in the desert, was controversial because the shot was totally set up. "The Depression Years" includes 120 photographs, with captions of enduring images of the unemployed and ragged children. If you are interested in more of the background of Rothstein and his work, then check out "Mind's Eye, Mind's Truth: FSA Photography Reconsidered" by James Curtis, if you can find a copy. Rothstein went on to become a staff photograph for "Look" and eventually the magazine's director of photography until it folded, at which point he taught photography at his alma mater. Rothstein is simply the definitive photographer of the Dust Bowl, as important to our cultural understanding as John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Rath" or the ballads of Woody Guthrie.

the depression years
This book is very exciting. It covers the depression from all over the country, the pictures are from New Mexico to Maine & Nevada to Florida. You really get a feel for the desperation that must have been felt. I really enjoyed looking through this.

Solid and old-fashioned biography
A meticulous and massive work that piles fact upon fact. This is a reprint of a 1941 work, and the author, Quinn, was born in 1875. He is concerned to defend Poe's reputation against charges of immorality. More background about the marriage to Virginia would have been interesting. How common were such marriages in Virginia at that time? Was the full age of 21 claimed on the marriage bond legally necessary? I don't know if Silverman's 1992 biography has this, I might try it, but 750 pages on Poe is enough for now. If you really need to see an exact reproduction of the title page of Poe's textbook of conchology, this is the book for you.

The Best Biography of Poe Ever Written, Period
This book is comprehensive and accurate in detailing the life of Poe. It is by far the most factual, accurate, comprehensive, and illuminating biography we have on Poe. All of the recent biographies of Poe pale by comparison, and are either flawed with incomplete information, or worse yet, full of inaccuracies.

Arthur Hobson Quinn's biography of Poe has almost all of the information we have on Poe's life... all it is lacking are some new facts about Poe that we have learned since 1941, when the book originally came out. Even though this book was first published in 1941, it STILL has the most information, and the most accurate information of any biography to date, on the great writer, Edgar Allan Poe.

I highly recommend this book to everybody.

A perfect narration of Poe's Life.
This is the best biography about Edgar Allan Poe I have ever seen. Meticulous and clear, Arthur H. Quinn take us to the real world that E.A.POE lived and show us with facts that Poe was more than a writer, a Genius.

Good for non-native teachers
I was a bit disappointed with the ESL Miscellany. I found it to be overly simplistic, which may be a bonus to non-native English speakers who teach ESL, but for other readers it may be frustrating. The book does consist of many useful lists and groupings, but there is little to tie it together. This is definately not a 'one stop shopping' purchase for the ESL teacher, but rather a fill-in for groupings and lists that you do not have the time to compose for yourself.

ESL MISCELLANY
As an ESL teacher in a foreign country with little resources and materials I found this book invaluable. The content of this book is great for reference for you and your students. In addition, if you don't have a curriculum to work from, here it is. If you are teaching ESL here or abroad this is a MUST book for your library. I've purchased many an ESL MISCELLANY as gifts for friends entering the field.

Good grouping vocabluary
The ESL Miscellany groups words, phrases, and idioms by topics such as cooking, transportation, hotels, restaurants, medicine and health, etc. All together, there are sixty different topics. About six years ago--I was in graduate school; that's how I remember--there was a discussion on this list centering around the question, "If you could take just five books..., what would they be?" The ESL Miscellany rated very high on the list. My Vietnamese students who are studying to become beauticians find the vocabulary (classified under barber and beautician) very useful. I would recommend this book for those learners who need good book on vocabulary groupped by category.

duvida (answer)
eu gostaria de saber mais sobre o seguinte livro: Fitzpatrick's Dermatology in General Medicine by Irwin M. Freedberg (Editor), Thomas B. Fitzpatrick (Editor) Our Price: $55.00

(i'd like know something else about this book)

Very practical approach,simple,excellent illustrations
I have read this book alot during exams,an excellent book, easy to understand, too the point, excellent illustrations. I am a consultant dermatologist from Pakistan I shall be grateful if someone could donate this book for our Library!
