Knowing Jensen better
This is a fine book that gives to the reader the real image about a brave man much maligned and calumniated by the leftist establishment - Arthur Jensen. It allows him to know the real Jensen, being an essential tool to show the human dimension of a courageous scientist that dared to face one of the "most sacred dogmas" of the modern world - the complete equality of all men. Obviously, men are not equal, nevertheless Jensen quite well manifests his opposition towards any form of humiliation on a racial basis.

The book also permits to the reader to take a first contact with Jensen's scientific thought about intelligence differences; nevertheless, it doesn't dispense further reading as Jensen's essential work "The g factor", Cavalli-Sforza's "The History and Geography of Human Genes" and J. Phillip Rushton's "Race, Evolution and Behaviour".

Easily readable, despite some technical vocabulary.

A fair look at an issue that's tough to be fair about.
The interviewer did an excellent job of being the polite skeptic, which enabled me to get a balanced, clear-headed look at the incendiary but crucial question of the roles of genetics and environment in intelligence, and even more controversial, in the well-established racial differences in intelligence. I was impressed with Jensen's extraordinary intelligence and surprised at how socially conscious he is, contrary to the media's portrayal of him.

Good Basic Guideline
For those just beginning in the world of shooting movies, this book outlines some of the very basic concepts. It would prove equally useful to professional and home movie enthusiasts. All the fancy equipment in the world cannot make a person a good photographer and/or editor, but the concepts discussed in this book, if followed, will accomplish that. Although the prose is at times boring and a little difficult to wade through, I plan to use this book in my classroom to teach students the basics of cinematography.

All the stories seem frozen in time
The phsicological aspects of the characters are developed very carefully so that you can almost crawl into their skin. The stories do not reflect an amazing creativity or deep dramas, but they provide the reader with a sense of lightness, which remains after the books is closed.

Money Talks
The answer to the question posed by the title of the centerpiece essay of this collection of 19, and indeed by the book itself, is most emphatically "yes." As the author relates:

"A hospital administrator at a large transplant center once permitted me to listen in on one end of a phone call between him and a high-ranking oficial in the State Department. The government official wanted the resident of an important Middle Eastern nation admitted for a kidney transplant because he was a relative of one of the leaders of that nation. The State Department official said it was in our national interest to give this man priority for a transplant. And he was given top priority for an operation that otherwise would not have been available to him."

This fundemental unfairness in the distribution of human organs for transplants, Caplan argues, is the reason for the lack of success in luring new donors. Caplan concludes that those who play a role in the process of allocation of organs for transplant must make equity their top priority to convince the public both to support the procurement of organs on a voluntary, altruistic basis and to continue the commitment of public and private funds to pay for transplants.

The essays, issued also in paperback, are divided into six groups: (1) the nature of applied ethics; (2) ethical issues in animal and human experimantation; (3) advances in reprodection and genetics; (4) transplants and other unatural acts; (5) aging, chronic illnes, and rehabilitation: and (6) money, medicine, and morality. In addition to the transplant section, in which the title essay falls, two sections are of particular interest.

Caplan's balanced view of the controversy surrounding animal experimentation is well worth reading by any scientist engaged in animal or human experimentation.

Finally, in the section on the advances in reproduction and genetics, Caplan dicusses the impact of patents on the Human Genome Project and invokes a key concept in understanding the importance of this work. In an interview with the 'Philadelphia Inquirer' published May 1, 1994, Caplan said, "the big breakthrough was to relize that there was such a thing, even for the nazis, as ethics, ...[t]hat's a real threat to my field, because if you can justify mass murder and torture by ethics, then can't you justify anything if you think about it long enough?"

There is a time for thought, there is a time for talk, and a time for action.

The appendix has a very helpful guide to locating problem translations and is easily cross-referenced for user ease. All in all an extremely useful and helpful guide for either the first time translator or the verteran epigrapher.

An Integrated System of Classification of Flowering Plants
Published in Hardcover by Columbia University Press (15 April, 1992)
Author: Arthur Cronquist
Amazon base price: $256.50
Used price: $256.43
Average review score:

an integrated system of classification of flowering plants
This book is a classic and should be part of the reading list in an advanced and intermediate systematics and plant taxonomy class. Lets not forget the many descriptions of the families and the systematic discrepancies that the author said need to be carefully studied. It is easy to think that in todays phylogenetics classification Cronquist's contribution would not fit, but that is not the case with this book in which morphological, anatomical, palynological, biogeographical and paleobotanical data offer a unique picture of each taxonomic group, regardless of todays results by means of other techniques. The book is a wealth of information.

The Interdisciplinary Curriculum
Published in Paperback by Eye on Education (January, 1998)

The theory, the research, and the practical ideas
Dr. Ellis and Dr. Stuen have collected the background theory and the most current research related to a well-known strategy for maximizing student interest and achievement. Interdisciplinary curriculum combines compatible knowledge and skills that traditionally would be addressed in separate disciplines or simply overlooked. They present all the pieces necessary for deciding on such an approach, using a very readable but authoritative style. I like the format for reviewing each one. The examples are a thoughtful range that represent the strategy, and they include contact information for active practitioners as well as current publications. For anyone caught up in the testing frenzy that has reduced many classes to ancient drill-and-kill methods, this book is an inspiration. I think it is accessible to any educated person, not just grad students in education beefing up their knowledge base, but also to school board members who may have been approached to fund a program in this category. Great combination how-to and how-come.
