Unique account of black soldiers in WWI
My great-grandfather, a white officer with the 369th, wrote this book. I have an original copy and found this version to be poorly printed and lacking the photos of the original. That said, it is a unique document of African American soldiers fighting with the French in WWI, filled with anecdotes of the triumph and trials of these troops, from winning the croix de guerre, to being subject to prejudice from other Americans, to returning home and marching up 5th Avenue to Harlem. Some may find the language and tone colored by the prejudice of the time, but the actions speak louder than the words in this story, for both white and black men and their families.

A Must Read for the Serious Student of American History!
The history of the 369th US Infantry (old 15th NY Guard) during WWI is perhaps the best kept secret of thatchapter of American History. Arthur Little has written a detailed account of the events that gave this wonderful regiment its "nom de guerre" The Harlem Hell Fighters. From the accounts of recruiting and training through the preparation for overseas movement the history of the regiment is highly detailed without question. Little, a white officer serving in various positions to include Adjutant and Battalion Commander in this black unit had the opportunity to observe and record first hand the exploits of this regiment that was orphaned from the American Expeditionary Forces and fought under French Command in the French 116th Infantry Division. The details of the campaigns at Sechault and the Argonne are with great attention to accuracy. Of special interest is the story of Sgt Henry Johnson of Albany NY. A Railroad porter turned soldier Johnson, along with his comrade, Needham Roberts, rebuff a night attack by more then two dozen Germans. Johnson, wounded 21 times, kills several Germans, rescues his buddy Roberts and sets the Germans to route. Johnson becomes the first American to be awarded the Croix De Guerre. The dialouge may be difficult to read at times but the story is fascinating and needs to be included in mainstream American History. A must for any serious about African-American and Military HIstory. Well worth the cost!!!

A great guide for traveling students!!!
I am planning to be an exchange student at the University of Canberra and of all the travel books I read, this met my needs the best. The book was honest about student discounts and the quality of youth hostels. The features I liked best were the planned walking tours of cities and the special attention to "Fun and Free" attractions. The author writes in a clear, friendly, engaging manner, I feel I know what to expect from Australia after reading this book.

A good choice
I just got back from a 3-week trip to Australia during which I used this book constantly, though my version is from 1999 and I don't know what version amazon.com is selling right now. I visited many of the places Frommer's recommended and stayed at a few of the lodgings listed as well (specifically, the Sydney Central Youth Hostel and Springfield Lodge, both good choices if you are on a budget and want a place that's clean and comfortable). Some people I travelled with part of the time preferred my guide over theirs (a Fodor, I think) so much that I let them borrow it after I flew home and they stayed behind. If I could change one thing, I would color-code the seperate chapters- it was difficult to locate things in my edition since everything was printed in black or red. Still, this book was extremely handy for me and I'm glad it was the one I chose to buy.

Pretty good travel guide
Worth looking at for the person who loves to research a place before they go. Fodor's and Rough Guide are better. Not as comprehensive, but more readable than Fodor's. I think I liked this coverage of the big cities better, organization wise.

Frommer's Scotland
Of all the travel books I purchased for my first trip to Scotland, the Frommer's edition is the one I used and kept after my trip. It is comprehensive, detailed, and gives good advice. It had all the attractions I wanted to visit and more. They also have a great website as a reference tool.

Credible supporting references of authors findings in book!
The author submits some simple pictures of areas of the haunts. He, then also interviews others who have experienced the supernatural. Gives an analysis of the ghosts and when the best time to witness the spirits. Indicates if location is still visited by the dead. Gives you the history of the location and of the deceased. Will hold your interest. More of a reference book than a "scary" one

A Handy Traveller's Guide to Haunted Places
As with his two previous books (The Ghostly Gazeteer and The Ghostly Register), the intention of A Ghost Hunter's Guide is not meant to scare (though many of the tales are spooky) but to serve as a sort of Mobil Traveller's Guide to haunted places.

Unlike other books on the subject that are most often written by self proclaimed ghost hunters, psychics or parapsychologists, Arthur Myers is a seasoned reporter who admits to never having seen a ghost. He does, however, believe in the sincerity of the people he has interviewed and included in his book. He follows the leads, reports on what he finds and present the information in a manner that is useful to the reader.

The book is broken down alphabetically by state and each section provides such information as the haunt's location, how to get there, the history of the location, when to see the ghost and if the location is still haunted.

It's a fun and often interesting read. You may discover that the quiet, unassumi! ! ng building just down the street from your home may be haunted...

Excellent Study!
I have just completed the 15 week study from this book and I found that I truly learned more studying the bible through the inductive system than by any other means. I highly recommend this book!

Great group study book
I really like how this book is structured for a group environment. You can meet once a week and go over what you learned, but in between you are guided on how to study daily. Most importantly it is focused on the Bible & you're reading the scripture along with each lesson. It doesn't skip around a book in the Bible & just pick out key points, it stays focused on what is said in context and forces you to look inwardly about your true relationship with the Lord! Enjoy!

Nice to finally find information about a favorite artist
Parker's artistic details are marvelous. He shows the early drawings of Elsley, describes associations with other artists, and gives background information. As stated in the foreword, his book is not comprehensive. He left out works that he could not identify. Readers can be sure that his information is valid because of his association with Elsley's daughter. Many thanks to Parker for his work about an artist who has given many much visual pleasure.

"Antique Road Show Discovery!"
This book was wonderful since the photographs and titles of the paintings helped me discover a painting that is now in the possession of Christies for auction in May, 2001. The painting was sitting in a dusty basement in South Dakota and since then has been loaded onto a refridgerated truck and deposited in New York.

Learning about Teaching
Very helpful and authoritative summaries of terms that are easily confused but essential for reading any of the literature in the field of education. A bit uneven, with some items including editorializing, but a good resource for anyone in a masters of education program. A teacher familiar with the terms in this book could never be accused of being just a caretaking technician; just browsing through this collection of definitions would make a teacher more thoughtful and deliberate.

A Valuable Educator's Reference
Anyone wishing to have quick access to information on all of the educational buzzwords drifting through our schools should have this book on her desk. Students in teacher training programs should definitely keep a copy handy. I use this book as a starting point for papers, lectures, and discussions with my colleagues.

On the better side
I'm not much of a book reader. I usually stick to magizines and news paper articals; But I must say I consider this book to be one of the better Books I have read. Some parts seemed to drag on forever, but then again Their were so many suprises and secrets that it all evened out. If I do ever decide to read a book or novel I like to read Gothic Mysteries. This book struck my fansy when I saw that it had the word Haunting in it. For the most part The Haunting of Lamb House was very injoyable!

a unique and literary tale
This book describes the intertwined lives of the persons who live in Lamb House over the course of many years: a crippled boy whose greatest desire never comes true; Henry James and his infatuation with various younger men; and other characters. And I do mean characters! These are not run-of-the-mill folks. They are interesting and quirky and unique. I also sensed some tongue-in-cheek pokes at sexuality, which were amusing. The entire book is enjoyable.

Influential
Levi is on the level of Agrippa in historical importance, and while not always practical, his influence cannot be underrated. THis is one of his most important works and is a MUST for any serious occultist.

The Map of the Karma of the Great Tradition
"The History of Magic" is a splendid literary work that unviels the shadowed predecessors of today's "Aquarian Lodge of Gnostic Anthropology". This book is a must for those who are serious enough to find it necessary to put together the pieces of the puzzling situation that we find ourselves in today, as students of occultism. Levi's knowledge is awe inspiring, as only a Master of the Universal Lodge of Intitiates could give.
When one reads this book, one may see the reason why so many esoteric schools and lodges, that have their historical roots upon the doctrine of the path of the Greater Mysteries, have now fallen into degeneration and black magick. It is clear to us, why there are so few institutions that remain untainted, giving freely the universal doctrine of all ages. The book that Eliphas Levi wrote, shows how the western tradition (GNOSIS in its true form)has developed throughout the many cultures, teachers, psuedo-esotericists, inquisitions, etc...
This is a must read for the student of occult arts...

oral history
This biik is an oral history of Pete Maravich, the player and the person. It recounts the memories of various people who knew Pete as the Pistol and as just plain Pete. It gives a balanced view of his past and is especially interesting in recounting Pete's later days and his conversion to Christianity. A good read for people who may have read Pete's biography but want to see him through others eyes.

Wonderful reading!
Pistol Pete was my childhood hero and this book tells me an awful lot about him from people who knew him during different parts of his life. It's people talking about Pete in their own words and the stories and memories are rich and interesting. I especially like the Christian angle to the book, telling of Pete's conversion to Christianity and his evangelical work. Most of the stuff I've read on Maravich downplay that stuff, but I think it as important as anything else he ever accomplished. Nice book for sure.
