A Breath of Fresh Air
Compared to childrens' fare these days, Uncle Arthur is a breath of fresh air. Uncle Arthur believed in the outdated notion that stories for children should inspire them to reach for the highest ideals, even if they're out of reach. Each story is told delightfully, and has a simple moral that children can understand and grow from.

I grew up on these stories, and I wish that I still had the book for my children.

Understanding Elementary Algeb Ra

The best algebra book I have come across.
This book was one of many I picked up from my local library in order re-educate myself in the basics of algebra, and out of the lot this book was by far the best.

It is very clearly written and layed out. It attacks all problems in a very methodical manner and the explainations are precise and easily understood. There are plenty of examples and exercises.

I rate this book very highly and would recommend it as being (probably) the best book for this level of math. I liked the book so much I ended up buying a copy.

Understanding Homosexuality, Changing Schools

This Book Could Reduce Teen Murder, Suicide and Misery
This book is a must read for everyone concerned with the issues of gay youths in our families, schools and communities. It is very well researched and documented, with hundreds of footnotes and references, by a person who is three ways qualified: he is gay, he was a public high school teacher for 20 years, and he has been a scholar at Harvard for several years. Despite being scholarly, it is highly readable, with many quotations and examples. I especially appreciate its quiet, thoughtful, judicious tone even though it is about a highly emotional and controversial set of issues.

Lipkin's book should be read by all gay young people and their parents, by friends and neighbors, and by teachers and administrators and others who set policy for and provide guidance for our young people, both gay and straight. Yes, it is expensive (the paperback version was announced long ago but is nowhere in sight, so don't wait for it). But it is really inexpensive if it leads to one less teen suicide or murder, or to a reduction in gay bashing incidents and personal misery. If you cannot afford it for yourself, get your library to buy it, read it, and then tell others in your community about it.

BETTER THAN MOST MATH PROFESSORS!
THIS IS A PROGRAMMED, AUDIO-TUTORIAL APPROACH TO LEARNING ALGEBRA. I USED TO GET LOST IN THE TRADITIONAL LECTURE APPROACH TO MATH -- THEN USED THIS BOOK ALONG WITH THE TAPES AT BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE. AFTER YEARS OF FRUSTRATION WITH MATH, I FINALLY GOT IT! I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO FEEL THEY ARE "MATH-IMPAIRED' AFTER TAKING THE TYPICAL CLASSES.

What a great read. This book truly let's you into the psyche of Baker. Reads sort of like a bio in many ways. Definetly a must read for Baker fans.

the ultimate in practice problems
This book literally saved my physical chemistry grade. The problems were almost identical to those my professor used on his exams. It covers most of the material used in the first semester of physical chemistry. I also highly recommend it if you have an older professor; they seem to favor these simplistic and concept oriented questions on homework and exams.

A clear yet detailed overview of what science does and is.
Everyone knows how deeply science has effected our lives, yet few have any idea how science works. For anyone who is curious about how science works, this is a must-read. Far from being a child's primer yet crystal-clear in defining the complex issues involved in scientific inquiry, this book has much to offer both layman and scientist alike. Strahler is fearless yet rigorous in his treatment of the methods & consequences of science, and he devotes equal time to exploring the weaknesses inherent in the scientific method (i.e., what it cannot do), as well as to the consequences of scientific ignorance. It is Strahler's passion for the truth that keeps this potentially-dry subject from going stale, and it's a passion that's infectious. The chapters on the supernatural, religion, creationism, and the impact of science on ethics are among the most lucid I have ever read. This is a book to set alongside the best of Carl Sagan, and, I daresay, is better.

Simplest text I have ran into on SR...
Dr. Arthur Evett has done an excellent job introducing the beginning concepts of special relativity. The diagrams are simple and the math is all algebra. I have read at least seven different texts on this subject and for some reason I absorbed Evetts book much faster than any others, even faster than Einstien's original book on Special Relativity.

I Highly recommended this book to anyone who is just beginning to study relativity concepts. I also strongly encourage any readers to also get the book "Autodynamics" by the SAA which covers material closely related to SR, but it is more up to date, and uncovers the flaws that were discovered in Special Relativity.

Yay!
I used this text for my freshman calculus-based physics class. I just wish I had worked a little harder! What a great book for introducing some difficult concepts. I highly recommend it to professors looking for an introcutory text. Although some mathematical techniques are glossed over (I remember matrix methods being introduced in an aside to a problem), overall the book is a good one. Lots of examples (ranging from very simple to pretty complex) are given -- this parallels the problems, which can be very easy or very challenging. Some numerical methods (I remember them being written out in BASIC, but the algorithms are easy to deduce from this) are presented. In addition, the order of the topics is good, and the humor which is included serves to lighten the load a bit. Kudos!
