Economic Sophisms
Published in Paperback by Foundation for Economic Education (September, 1996)
Authors: Frederic Bastiat, Arthur Goddard, and Henry Hazlitt
Amazon base price: $11.95
Average review score:

Opponents of Logic Beware
Bastiat does some gentle and not so gentle poking fun at the Trade Luddites of his era. His defense of free trade is no less relevant today. In fact, with the nonsense we are hearing about trade from political and activist quarters - it is probably even more important today.

An outstanding source in "common sense" economics.
This is a book that I first read about fifteen years ago, and the wonderful stories provide vivid examples for evaluating, or countering, "new" economic ideas with common sense historical, or allegorical, counterparts.

Protectionists, beware - this book will change you forever.

El Fin De LA Infancia/Childhood's End

Podremos resolver nuestros problemas y seguir siendo humanos

An amazing collection...
King Arthur has always been of interest to me, and I happened upon this book on sales table and just had to buy it. Little did I know that for hours I'd have my face stuck in it...this book is no less than excellent, a great collection of Arthurian stories from different points of view in alphabetical order. A great reference and an awesome book for people interested in learning more about Arthur ;)

Everything you need to know about King Arthur (Almost)
If this system allowed me to give 4-1/2 stars, that's probably where I would actually have come down. This reference source is magnificent. Coghlan includes names from often obscure and/or hard to find Arthurian legends, and he notes his sources. My only complaints is that he does not say where in his sources he found the name (so sometimes you have to go on a bit of a scavenger hunt), he's missed a couple of rare sources I wish he'd included, and he does not cite instances of the names outside Arthurian material (which is sometimes important). Other than that, this is a reference work of the highest quality.

Another excellent reference from Penguin
I have yet to be disappointed by a historical reference book from Penguin, this one is no exception. Ancient history is a subject that often requires the use of many books in concert, but the Penguin Encyclopedia provides an amazing breadth of consolidated, concise information.
I don't know what I would do without mine!

Great wide-scope book for the beggining of world history.
Excellent book covering all major ancient civilizations. Covers the social, political, economical and technological aspects of theses civilizations with greta richness and simplicity. Very unbiased account. Excellent for the person who wants to have a good introduction to ancient history.

Eric Fischl : 1970 - 2000

Great book on Fischl, but.........
This is what a book on an artist should be, lots of nice big images, early to current work(presented chronologically) and not too much BS, except for an essay written by Steve Martin(yes the comedian).

.........But the more I look at the book, the more I think Fischl has quality control issues. The more I look at it, the more bad paintings I notice. Don't get me wrong, this is a great book and Fischl has done some great paintings, but the more you look at this book, the more you notice how bad he can be at times-quality control. Some of the paintings should have never left the studio except in a dumpster but when your getting as much money as he gets for work.................... I imagine its hard not to think everything you make is great, when you get the "status" he has as an artist.

but this isn't an art critique, this is a great book on a well know contemporary artist. If you like Fischl, this is the book to get and it may give you more insight then you want, if you have any asthetic sensibilities.

Whats New has a lot to share!
I found the book very helpful in my own clown ministry as I learned from the chapters on clowns from around the world and their tips they shared.

If you want a good perspective on gospel clowning, get this book!

This book is a must for anyone doing clown ministry!!
This book has the insite for those wishing to do or are already doing clown ministry work. It has interviews with top people in clown ministry today and some folks that are not that well know. Great insite into how others are doing it today. This book also has wonderful skits you can use on your own or with a group. Our "Fools for Christ" group has used several skits with great success. This is a highly recommended book in my opinion.

The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard
Published in Audio Cassette by Audio Book Contractors (January, 2001)
Authors: Arthur Conan, Sir Doyle and Richard Brown
Amazon base price: $38.95
Average review score:

Nice
I loved reading the book so much, I keep reading it over and over again.

Funny and vivid
It is surprising how funny Conan Doyle could be sometimes. Brigadier Gerard is a wonderfully conceited, rather dim-witted but brave and generous-hearted cavalry officer in Napoleon's Army. His adventures are a delight to read.

Extraordinary Cases of Sherlock Holmes
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (August, 1995)
Author: Arthur Conan Doyle
Amazon base price: $12.70
Average review score:

Wonderful!!
This book was great!! It had eight different cases, and all were great. My favorites were The Adventure of the Speckled Band, Silver Blaze, and the Adventure of the Six Napoleans. If you enjoy classics, mysteries, or anything related to o.k. creepy stories, I suggest you read this book.

A Superlative collection
This is a must book for every new Sherlock Holmes reader. For anyone out there who has not read any of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, this book introduces the reader to some of the best Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Silver Blaze, The adventure of the Speckled Band, The adventure of the dancing men, The adventure of the Blue Carbuncle are a few of the Holmes mysteries presented in this book. Each of the mysteries presented in this book expose different facets of Holmes and he is in his elements in each of them. That the book is in large print is icing on the cake.

False Pretenses
Published in Hardcover by Mysterious Press (January, 1994)
Author: Arthur Lyons
Amazon base price: $18.95
Average review score:

Looking for a modern-day Marlowe?
Jacob Asch is about as close to Marlowe as it gets. When I read crime fiction (especially first-person stories about private investigators set in LA!), I'm continually making comparisons with Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe. So far, I've found two worthy successors to Chandler: Crumley and Lyons.

Lyons' execution is nearly flawless. The story never sags, from its opening in which a new client is found dead in Asch's office. The pursuit of the truth about the client, his prostitute girlfriend and junkie crime-partner is wound into a tight, elegant ball of a plot, surrounded by a host of LA police detectives... some cooperative and some downright suspicious of Asch's motives.

I encountered and read this book by accident. I will hunt down the other Asch novels for the simple reason that this book is an entertaining, nearly flawless example of LA PI fiction.

A hard-boiled winner
Reporter turned private detective Jacob Asch agrees to meet a man on short notice--anything to take Asch from the ennui of tracking down elderly people for conservatorship actions. The man says he suspects his wife of being unfaithful, and Asch takes the case. After a fruitless day of following the woman, Asch returns to his office to find his client murdered. Asch is further confused when the man turns out not to be who he claimed to be. The police are not confused, though. Asch is promptly jailed.

When the police verify Asch's whereabouts during the day, they finally release Asch, who vows to solve the mystery of the murdered client. When each lead seems to leave to a corpse, Asch finds himself involved in an even larger mystery and a growing cast of suspects. He finds himself growing increasingly suspicious as he falls into the arms of a gorgeous blonde homicide detective. But can he trust her, her alcoholic partner, the self-centered reporter who did the story on police corruption, the widow of a slain cop, the mechanic who dabbles as a pimp, or any of the other people in the story?

"False Pretenses" is a hard-boiled detective story for the '90s, true to the genre's pioneers without being an anachronism. Jacob Asch may not be Sam Spade, but he is not too far removed. The result is a very enjoyable novel.

Favorite Russian Fairy Tales (Dover Children's Thrift Classics)

Ah, the culture of it
This is a fantastic collection of stories that have been a part of the Russian culture for centuries. Anyone growing up in Russia has heard these stories, and now so can you! Kids will appreciate the characters and adventures. Parents will appreciate the values and lessons. Everyone will appreciate the timeless tales of fantasy, magic, and talking animals.

A lot of "read" for the penny!
This is a fine introduction to popular Russian fairy tales, including the story of the little snow girl (a childless couple builds a daughter out of snow) and "Frost" (cruel stepmother sends girl out to freeze in the snow, but Frost sees her kindness and spares her-- the nasty stepsisters are not so lucky). The similarity between some of the Russian tales and our own English fairy tales is interesting (why is the stepmother always the evil one?). This introductory collection leaves one wanting to learn more Russian tales.
