It covers the basics
I found the book to be quite informative from a preliminary point of view. The book covers the main areas of yacht design and construction in a condensed way. I say that only because if you are looking for a deeper understanding of the some of the fundemental principles (math and science stuff) at work in a yacht you won't find it in this book. You do get a great summation though. It was a great introduction into the boat design process. I would highly recommend the book if you need to get a grip on the basic issues at work in the design and construction of craft in the 30 - 100 foot class.

Extermely in depth learning and reference tool.
This is the first (recent) design book I have found that truely covers all aspects of boat design and construction for all building materials, boat types and boat sizes. It's easy to understand but the reader must be sharp in math to properly use the information.

One suggestion to readers. Read the book the first time through without even glancing at the math portions (formulas). Then read it again including the math. This book has so much information that it is impossible to comprehend both portions the first time through.

I highly recommend this book to novices, naval arch. and naval eng. alike.

Scargill and Heathfield were heroes of the first order!
Before I go on to say what a fabulous piece of work this is, I must stress one criticism. I felt Milne went into perhaps too much detail about what happened to 'this million' or 'that million' with reference to where Scargill and Heathfield hid the NUM's donations. Although interesting, I would like to also have seen Arthur himself give a closer look at his own perspective of events surrounding the strike. I feel this would ultimately have been more revealing about the nature of the whole smear campaign than so much time and print being spent on the detail.

What double dealing and hypocrisy from everyone from the Soviets to Kinnock though! I'm sure I feel more angry at the likes of Ron Todd (not mentioned much actually) Neil Kinnock and the whole TUC and Labour Party than I ever will about Thatcher and her despicable (but at least openly hostile)cronies.

Anyway, I was moved by the miners' story. I am ashamed on behalf of all the British people who voted for, and kept voting for, Thatcher.

I am only sad that a movie has not been made based on this book. It's nail-biting stuff reminiscent of Forsyth so why is there so little literature and film on what happened? Where's Ken Loach? Come on Ken, get a film made of it all!

Great piece of work Seamas!

Good exposition but more documentation needed.
I'd like to begin with a disclaimer: I broadly share the politics of the author and I'm sure this influenced my rating. ...I would have preferred much MORE detail, ...In particular, I think it is regrettable that there is no appendix which gives verbatim extended extracts of the original Mirror and Cook reports to which the book is a rebuttal. (To be fair, this might not be the fault of the author -- it's possible that copyright considerations prevented the inclusion of such material. However, even if this is so, he should have mentioned it in the preface or acknowledgements.) I was somewhat put off by the author's unstinting admiration for Arthur Scargill. Yes, he has suffered a lot, and I'm sympathetic, too. But surely many of his unpopular stances (such as his adamant refusal to condemn any picket-line violence) could have been subjected to greater scrutiny. Despite these critical comments, I believe that this book is essential reading since it is a case study which constitutes a critical contribution to a much under-explored topic -- mainstream media coverage of the Industrial Left. I was also very impressed by the long list of works which Milne referred to. This gave me the impression that Milne had a great deal of background information to work with, and further motivated me to consult these other works.

A useful book. . .
. . .by authors who remember that they are writing for persons who are NOT professional mathematicians.

In today's world, frequently persons enter the business profession from a background in something other than what in the past might have been considered traditional avenues. Not all business textbooks recognize this (see my review for "Mathematical Applications")! However, this book seems to be an exception.

The material is presented in a logical format; key formulae are highlighted and set off from the rest of the text; and in-depth business examples are given in each chapter, demonstrating the particular statistical tools to be taught.

A useful and recommended volume.

Great Text!!
The information in this book is clear-cut, concise, and easy to read. Easily understandable examples are given for the various statistical formulas, and extras like z-score value charts and the like help a lot. If you have a talented instructor leading your Stats class (like I did) in addition to this text, you will be sure to ace this course (like I did)!

P.S.: If you happen to be an Information Systems/Information Technology major (such as myself) DO NOT RE-SELL THIS BOOK! You will need the information in this book in your future Info Systems courses, and you will definitely realize the TRUE value of this text!

Thought-provoking and superbly edited.
This collection of essays on issues related to organ transplantation is both thought-provoking and timely, as our society grapples with critical problems such as the allocation of donor organs, the use of animal organs, etc. Caplan and Coelho have done a superb job of editing this anthology.

Covers a wide variety of topics
I have gone through a very emotional period in which twice, I thought I was going to be a living organ donor. Once it was to have been a kidney and the other time a lobe of my liver. Each time, I was unable to undergo the surgery. My liver's blood vessels are in the way, thus the surgeon cannot safely operate without risking severing an artery. Going through the process of preparing for surgery, even though ultimately the surgery never took place, has given me an interest in the topic of organ transplants and the ethical issues surrounding them. This book has articles on the ethics of living transplants as well as many other topics such as the allocation of scarce organs, using fetal tissue, defining "brain death," etc. Some articles are several years old so the technology discussed may be a little dated but the ethical issues remain. Some articles are from medical journals and are rather technical from a lay person's standpoint. Nonetheless, most articles are interesting and when I showed this book to my would be surgeon for the liver transplant, he immediately ordered a copy for himself.

Everybody loves somebody sometime (especially himself) : the story of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis

Mostly good reading
I have read this book a couple of times, along with Nick Tosches book on Dino. I like to read about the lives of different entertainers and find that Dean Martin was probably one of the most fascinating personalities of his time. The fact that he was such a private person makes him that much more intriguing. I do feel Arthur Marx did the best he could with the information he had, but I cannot honestly give this book 5 stars. I'll read it again and maybe I'll change my mind.

Arthur Marx had more facts straight than did Nich Toshes
I have this book and the reading is good. Actually this book seems to be most of the research for Nick Toshes book. Minus the mob and language. Although you get the feeling that Arthur Marx really knew and liked the subjects he's writting about. Would recommend it to be included in any collectors library.

Kids' fiction at its best
It's sometime in an Orwellian future, where any dissenter is deported to a newfound inhabitable planet. A prison ship develops a glitch, however; it crashes on the destination planet, killing half of the deportees. Five survivors--a rugged outdoorsman, an empathic computer tech, and three tough street kids--band together against hostile aliens and a psychotic ex-M.P. who also survives the crash.

While not particularly deep--it was written for teenagers, after all--"Exiles" was an exciting read.

Excellent book!!!!!!!!!!!!
The "Exiles of Colsec" is the best of the Colsec trilogy. It is an exciting, creative Sci-fi book. Douglas Hill has written an incredibly imaginative book here.

A mammoth devotional work on John's gospel.
This is a rich exposition of John's gospel, interpreting the text in its immediate context and in its canonical context. It also draws applications for today. Having said that, "today" is a relative term: Pink applies it to situations that were true of the evangelical church in the mid 1940's. But there is so much timeless material here, that the commentary is really a must for the pastor's bookshelf. In particular, the comments on John 1 and John 3 and John 9 are flat out brilliant. Yet I must also concur with the previous reviewer who noted that occasionally, Pink spiritualizes the text a bit too often. Particularly with numbers, but also with his interpretation of John chapter two, which he sees as an symbolic reference to Judaism as a "dead husk." In his attempt to draw applications for today, he sometimes reads things into the text that aren't there (notice some of his comments on John 7-8). But for the most part, this is a tremendously rich treatment of the Gospel of John.

Lucid reading; clear and complete commentary. Please read.
GOOD POINTS: 1. Pink strongly emphasizes that the Gospel of John reflects the deity of Christ. 2. Each chapter is 7 - 15 pages and covers a specific event in the Gospel of John. The outline of the book follows the chapters in Scripture consecutively and completely. 3. Study questions are provided by Pink to focus the readers attention to the main points in the Gospel. 4. Pink prayerfully considers each text and has been blessed with an ability to lucidly present rational commentary on texts. BAD POINTS: 1. I humbly suggest that he may spiritualize a bit much, especially with the use of numbers. However, the main points of the Gospel are clearly presented.

The final diagnosis

Dissecting the Doctors
"Scalpel...clamp...uh oh, we need some suction...suction, come on ... clear!" No this isn't ER, nor Chicago Hope, it's Arthur Hailey's riveting hospital suspense drama, "Final Diagnosis". This eye-gluing, can't-put-down novel is a novel like no other. If you like hospital shows like ER and Chicago Hope, then you're gonna like this novel as well, maybe even better. Hailey takes his audience behind the curtains in the hospitals that we norms leave all our hopes and health in, and brings us the true environment that surrounds our residential medicine men/women, from love, pride, money, ethics, and most importantly of all politics. This book mainly surrounds an aging pathologist, Dr. Joe Pearson, who's years of service at the Three Rivers Hospital are coming to an end. Colleagues nd adversaries feel that he may be a hazard to his patient's health. The main struggle lies within Joe to realize that he is through. Love seems to always find it's way into everything. In this novel love hits two surgeons who are "just friends" and a young nurse and a young pathologist. Overall this book is one everyone can enjoy, whether you read for the love the hospital drama or for the main issue your sure to enjoy.

Interesting, gripping, definitely worth reading
In this book, Aurthur Hailey takes his readers behind the scenes in a hospital. He designs his characters carefully so that we will get to know them well and then learn to care about what happens to them next. The story itself is thrilling and flows well. In addition, the many things you'll learn about a hospital are fascinating and extremely interesting. This book won't take you long to read, and as soon as you start reading, you'll find you won't want to stop until you finish. As for all the other things in your life - they'll have to wait.
