Casanova's Homecoming
Published in Hardcover by AMS Press (June, 1930)

An intriguing story told well.
Arthur Schnitzler is today a fairly obscure Austrian novelist and playwright of the early 1900's. He's received some attention recently because his novella "Dream Story" inspired Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut". ("Dream Story" is also excellent and can help you understand the movie.) "Casanova's Homecoming", if you can find a copy, is well worth reading--compact, simply told, carefully plotted, thoroughly thought-provoking. It relates a fictitious episode in Casanova's life when he has become an old man of 53. Most of his charm and all of his money are gone, but his cravings and amorality remain. Quite by chance, he comes to visit the home of an old acquaintance who is much indebted to him, and immediately sets out upon a dark seduction. It is a story about growing old, about how one's struggle to remain young can become pathetic and ugly even when it succeeds. Schnitzler likes to write about sex, dreams, coincidence, free-thinking, and deep mysteries of the soul--"Casanova's Homecoming" gets you thinking about all these themes, mainly because it's very hard to ascertain Schnitzler's attitude toward Casanova--does he like him? Loathe him? Pity him? Does he have any feeling toward him at all? After reading this, you may find yourself asking many such questions. This may have been the author's intent: his writing seems designed to provoke questions rather than provide answers. He does it well!

Creepy, but Clever
In this story, it's fairly obvious WHO done it right from the beginning, but HOW is the mystery. Two sisters, heiresses, are living with their stepfather. One dies tragically and mysteriously, with only enough time to tell her sister that it was the speckled band that caused her death. Now the other sisters life is in danger. Sherlock has to discover what the speckled band is in time to save her life. Soon he and Watson find their own lives in danger. The story is a fascinating mystery/adventure, with just a touch of the exotic, well-written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Quality
In reading the book cover to cover, Frankel and Gelman display a comprehensive and succicnt role of the case manager. As a psychologist, reading and reviewing this book leads me to believe that this should be the role for most mental health practitioners. An easy to understand, highly academic, and a must if you practice in the mental health field. Your level of graduate study is irrelevant you must practice and continously review the skills that are reviewed in this book

A "must" for church educators!
This book has a wonderful selection of creative programs for church folks of all ages. A popular selection is the program for Promotion Sunday - Presentation of Bibles to Third Graders. Ms. Smith gives clear lists of participants, materials needed for events throughout the church year. The material includes common events like Christmas and Easter, but also includes unusual events like dramas for Human Relations Day or Heritage Sunday, to name a few. A great book to have!...

I could eat this book!
This is the most delicious book I have ever read. I was surprised to learn not only about caviar (which I am a addict of) but also about truffles. The mouthwatering chapters on foie gras and smoked salmon are hard not to reread late at night when I am alone and yearning for something great. And Champagne --- one of my favorite beverages is handled with a sensativity and understanding that surpasses the snobs in the business and makes it a tangible subject.

An American Humorist writes about Americans
Mark Twain is the quintesential American curmudgeon. His style formed an era and no one could ever reproduce him although many have tried. Read the book and meet the Man. I laughed out loud and at times was gripped with the wringing unrelenting pathos of this great master. I had to laugh at myself a time or two...

A Worthy Collection
This is an excellent collection of poems by one of the often overlooked members of the the Inklings. Mr. Dodds' useful introduction and organization of these vibrant poems is very helpful, and it's too bad that this book will be read primarily by academics.

Best Book Ever
I think this book would be very good for kids that don't usually like to read. In the beginning, it is very sad, so you want to find out what happens to Charlie. You keep reading because you like Charlie's personality and you care about what will happen to him.

My Favorite Book of Bible Stories
This was my favorite book of bible stories as a young child. It has beautiful pictures and the stories are written so that a young person in grade school can read them. Young children gravitate to this book.

I like to give copies of this book as presents to young children - I only wish it were in hard back as mine was.
