Here There Be Dragons...
The natives called Formalhaut II by the name of Fergis. In Galactic listings the Watchers and Adjusters called it Camelot for a good reason.
For one thing, magic seemed to work. For another, knighthood was the order of the day and a strict chivalry ruled the lands. For a third, there was evil in the world to be combatted.
Mere observation from orbit no longer sufficed, because now that evil had assumed menacing and warlike proportions. Armies and huge flying dragons were moving from the sinister southlands to overwhelm this world, much as the legions of legendary Mordor had moved to conquer Middle Earth.
It was time for an Adjuster to step in and unravel the mysteries of Camelot...and that task fell to Kyrie Fern, henceforth to be known as Harl Lenti, swordsman and manipulator of a mightier magic - that of galactic science.

Science Fiction meets the Round Table
A superb novel. The three book set: A World Called Camelot, Camelot in Orbit and The Magick of Camelot have been favorites of mine for many years. Here, the old stories of global conflict, Magick (sic), and all the best of feudal society meld in to a fine tale. I was drawn into the characters and the setting. A must read set. Very hard to find now.

Heroes of Omaha Beach
The 115th was in the first wave assault on Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944. Nearly 80 percent of the men were killed. This book, compiled from military reports of the activities of the 115th, provides exceptional insight into the lives and actions of these brave men from the time they landed in England to prepare for the assault until they settled in as occupation troops in Bremen, Germany, following VE day. An exceptional reference for anyone researching D-Day or the Battles for St. Lo, Brest or the Ruhr River.

Even if you've seen the movie, read this
Because it is a real classic of science fiction, but not just a genre-representation. It's a fine piece of literature, sci-fi or not. It tells the story of David Bowman and his travel to Saturn. His mission is to find about the first extraterrestrial signal of intelligence, detected in a monolithe which has sent it from the Moon to Saturn. On their way, Bowman and his colleague share the command of the spaceship with a computer, HAL, which suddenly awakes to life and consciousness. HAL goes mad and tries to destroy the mission, for reasons that will keep you thinking for a long time, with no clear result. Although you probably know the plot, I don't want to ruin it for other people.

This is a chilling book, enigmatic, disturbing and almost criptic in its overwhelming ending. It speculates about technological advancements, about the risks of artificial intelligence, and it opens the door to unsuspected and strangely verosimile possibilities about the Universe. If you haven't done it, see also Kubrick's movie: watch the Universe dancing Strauss's the Blue Danube and Bowman crossing into another dimension.

"What Watson never told"
Baring-Gould has taken it upon himself to explain what the childhood of Sherlock Holmes was like, as well as what really happened during the Great Hiatus, Holmes vs. the Ripper, and even Dr. Watson's first wife. (ACD wrote but never published a play in which Watson traveled to San Francisco and met Constance Adams in 1884.) A nice touch is the timeline at the end of the book, starting from the meeting of Holmes' parents, and an index of books and magazines from 1920-1960. Basically, a necessity for true Sherlockians.

Great Western!
Texas was a lawless land when Jeff and Rachel Becket crossed the Red River with their wagon party in 1840. They were the first, real American pioneers. Some of the wagon people became ranchers, some became outlaws.

It wasn't easy on the frontier, surviving Comanche raids and the brutal forces of nature. With sweat and strength they struggled to carve an empire out of a wilderness. And for Jeff Becket it was a battle he'd win or die trying.
