A history of Rome to A.D. 565
Published in Unknown Binding by ()

Average review score:

A textbook on Rome to AD 565. Quite thorough.
This is a textbook, no doubt about it. But it's still very readable and informative. The author attempts to limit himself to description of those events for which contemporary or near-contemporary accounts are available. For example, he omits all description of Rome under the kings, since the earliest manuscripts about them are from hundreds of years later. He even goes so far as to state that Romulus may not have been a historical person! There is a ruthless zeal to de-sensationalize Roman history by omitting scandalous details, making the book less exciting than it could be. But this is a textbook, not entertainment. There are excellent sections on economics, agriculture, literature, and the arts as they developed through Roman history. Significant treatment is also given to the Roman military system and its evolution as a core element of Rome's culture. If you want to learn about Rome and don't want to hear about the "juicy details", get this book. Otherwise, to AD 100, get Livy.

Good Source for information about early Watauga County
This is an excellent book for research about Watauga County, and it's early settlers. This book is a reprint of the 1915 edition and portions of it can be found online on my geocities site, Heartland/Estates/8473, when there, just click on the "Watauga" link and then watch for the name of the book. This book has original photographs and is a very nice volume to own and is just as nice as some of the other reprints out there, at a better price. Highly desirable if you do genealogy research in Watauga County. This book from the Overmountain Press, Johnson City, TN has a full name index which helps tremendously when doing your research.

A mixed bag of short stories
This collection of three stories by Miller is worth reading for the last story in the book alone, "Fitter's Night." This is a superb story, the kind of short story you could imagine a great dramatist might write. The first story - "Homely Girl" is confused and not up to the mark. The second story, "Fame" is unfortunately a rather easy joke. So skip these (or read them quickly) and go straight to the last one. It is a story that will stay with you for a long time to come.

The Hounds Of The Baskervilles
Most people love dogs, however, that hound in this book was anything but charming. Henry Baskerville, the heir to a vast fortune and a valuable estate, feels that his life is in grave danger because of a frightful family legend. The legend statesthat all Baskerville heirs will be plauged by a great, luminous and ghastly hound that will haunt them until the day they die. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, his assistant, traves to Devonshire where all this is happening. It is up to Holmes and Watson to solve the errie case of "The Hounds Of The Baskervilles."

There were many things I liked aboput that book "The Hounds of the Bakervilles" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. One thing I liked about the book was thatsit had a superior plot. As a reader, I was dreawn into the book by the very first chapter. The book was written in first person, being Dr. Watson. Since the book was written in first person, I felt as though i was right beside Watson and Holmes back in the ninteenth century. I felt this way because of the wonderful descriptions and many adjecitives. When I read one of the descriptions of the hound, my breath ws taken away. In one passage Doyle writes, "Even now, it that stillness of death, the huge jaws seemed to be dripping with a bluish flame and the small, deep-set, cruel eyes were ringed with fire.

This is an excelent book that all will enjoy reading!

What are you talking about?
First of all, I understand where you are coming from. The evaluation of any sports athelte is very difficult. your way of evaluation is good, although the fact remains that the moves, the feeling the heart each person brings to the court is different, and should be included in any evaluation. Michael Jordan has done so much more than play basketball. He is an icon to so many. He has been a father figure to those without one. He has been a role model for kids with no money. He is someone we have broken down stereotypes for and allowed him into our everyday lives. He may not be the best basketball player to you, but to so many other people around the world, HE IS.

A neat little book!

This is a neat little book.

The author, Jay Arthur, was apparently motivated to write a book designed to instruct you and me in how to motivate ourselves and everyone we come into contact with, but without manipulating them. He is very clear on that. It's apparently not nice to intentionally manipulate people, as long as you can get them to do what you want without such nefarious methods and intent. There's apparently a subtle shade of difference there!

There are several very funny, professionally drawn cartoons in the book, as well as aphorisms, quotes and witty sayings on about every other page, in large bold type which help to illustrate his thoughts. They are almost worth the price of the book all by themselves.

The meat of the book is advice on how to motivate yourself and others, and to change opinions and attitudes from those with which you disagree (negative thoughts) to those more in line with your own opinions and desires (positive, reasonable, healthy thoughts).

Mr. Arthur is a motivational speaker and consultant who works with people who "want to master the mysteries of the mind and companies that want jungle medicine for the corporate soul."

Through the book, it is apparent that he also hopes to merchandise his motivational videos and other books on the same subject matter.

This is a small (145 page) hardcover book with large, easy to read type. If you are interested in this kind of subject matter it would probably be money well spent. At my age, simply awaking every morning is a major accomplishment. Changing the world is no longer one of my primary interests.

It's a good little book.

Awesome! - Even If You're NOT Studying for the AP Test
I truly loved this book. I am on an Academic Bowl Team and needed to be able to cover the information explained in AP English/ Comp. This book has helped oh so greatly in my playing ability, and I feel that I could pass the AP Test without have taken the class. The book clearly explains everything on the test and shows manners of remembering how and when to use certain things. I highly recommend it!
