A rich compilation of articles and interviews.
THE LIVELY ART is an amazing collection. The names in the table of contents include many of the greatest artists today: Peter Sellars, Andrei Serban, Susan Sontag, Milan Kundera, Carlos Fuentes, Marsha Norman, Philip Glass, Robert Wilson, Heiner Muller, Dario Fo, JoAnne Akalaitis, Don de Lillo, Elliott Goldenthal, Liviu Ciulei, David Rabe, David Mamet, Paula Vogel, and Christopher Durang. Through interviews and articles written by the artists themselves, the pieces in this anthology provide an invaluable insight into the creative process and also an overview into contemporary theater practices. Some of the selections, like the acrimonious exchange of letters between Samuel Beckett and artistic director Robert Brustein, have great historical importance and raise important questions about the relation of any production to the text that inspired it.

In addition, distinguished scholars have contributed provocative essays: Robert Brustein, Harry Levin, Richard Gilman, Stephen Greenblatt, Jan Kott, and Harold Bloom. These articles provide interesting examples of current critical approaches from the new historicism (Greenblatt on King Lear) to production history (Kott on Hamlet). And in the symposium excerpt about The Taming of the Shrew sparks fly when a great theater director (Andrei Serban) confronts three formidable Harvard English professors: Greenblatt, Brustein, and Marjorie Garber. I particularly appreciated the remarks on Brecht by Harvard law professor Martha Minow as well as Arthur Holmberg's urbane essay "Machiavellis of the Bedroom--an Erotic Endgame." Also, the interviews with Janathan Miller, Philip Glass, and Robert Wilson are illuminating. The production photographs are a giant bonus.

This book is indispensable for anyone interested in contemporary drama. I can think of no other theater in the world that could have put together such a collection. Charles Gunnard Thomas, New York City.

A stunning capture ofthe country's most beautiful log homes.
Cindy and Art Thiede have captured a fantastic portrait of the finest, most creative and unusual log homes across the nation in this compilation of beautiful photographs and informative, stimulating text. This great reference book conforms with all types of decorating styles while maintaining code regulations, written in a style that is easily understood by the professional or non-professional. It is an invaluable aid to those planning a new log home or remodeling an older one.

When it comes to building log homes, no one is as knowledgeable, articulate and downright helpful as this talented couple. This book is an unreserved must for anyone considering a log home or any part thereof as it offers a plethora of tidbits, details and ideas to help in creating one's own fabulous log structure. I used this as my bible when building, constantly referring to the pictures and text for layouts, decorating tips and how-tos. It's an absolute essential for all home builders, regardless of where they live. I wanted to start a second log home just so I could use more of their ideas! Cindy and Art -- thank you so much for this literary contribution (and your last one, too) -- I'm just glad I got the opportunity to openly share my feelings about your book! I've heard you have a new log home book scheduled to come out sometime this year. I can't wait to see it!

Lord Arthur Savile's Crime

excellent interpretation of Wilder's short story
This is a CBC dramatized interpretation of Wilde's short story. Taped in front of live audience, this is by far the best story- telling that has ever done to Wilde's work. Both music and sound effect are superb, and best of all, the narration and dialogues closely follow the original story. In this respect, CBC has outperformed BBC by a large degree.

Don't believe superficial certainties
Lord Saville one night listens to a chiromantist who tells him he has to commit a crime, whose victim is supposed to be a relative of some kind, before being able to marry his love. The tale is full of humor and shows how he fails, systematically, in his enterprise, because he believes the soothsayer. But the more humoristic the tale becomes, the more desperate Lord Saville grows. Till one night he kills the chiromantist. He has finally been able to rebel against the prediction and this rebellion proves the prediction is a fake. But a second dimension appears in the tale. The chiromantist had been introduced to Lord Saville by some woman who invites such oddities to her parties to amuse the audience. She behaves as if she believed in those ominous birds that she calls lions. And Lord Saville was naive enough to accept this prediction as true and unescapable because it had been introduced to him by this particular woman, in this particular situation. Men must not fall in the traps of social tricks that some women hire to give some life to their social evenings that would be very dull otherwise. Who is wiser? The woman who "animates" her social gatherings with such attractions? Or the man who falls in the trap of believing such predictions? The other tales of the collection are all just as funny by showing how some people are able to go beyond such appearances and reach another level of being that is some kind of game and it becomes a trap to the gullible ones.

Lord Baltimore: English Politician and Colonist (Colonial Leaders)

Lord Baltimore and the English exploration of Newfoundland..
Any young student who picks up this Colonial Leaders volume about "Lord Baltimore: English Politician and Colonist" by Loree Lough is going to assume that this is the guy for whom the city of Baltimore was named. This is certainly true. But I bet they will be surprised to learn that Lord Baltimore never even visited Maryland. A few months after George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, died in 1632 the Maryland Charter was granted and it was his sons who led the first expedition to "Maria's Land." In fact, Lord Baltimore helped found the colony of Avalon in Newfoundland and ended up in Virginia after publicly declaring himself a Catholic and resigning his office as secretary of state. George Calvert was, indeed, both a politician and a colonist, which is a most interesting combination. In fact, his political career is much more interesting than his life as a colonist. "Lord Baltimore" is illustrated with both historic paintings and etchings, as well as contemporary color photographs. Other volumes in this series look at other famous colonists including Peter Stuyvesant, Miles Standish, John Smith and William Penn. These books provide much more information to students, and teachers for that matter, than they will find in their American history textbooks.

Well written and exciting
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) is now chiefly remembered for his excellent Sherlock Holmes stories. However, Doyle wrote many exciting stories of adventure and mystery. This book contains four such stories.

1) In The Lost world, reporter Edward Malone accepts the challenge to explore a recently discovered South American plateau that allegedly contains dinosaurs. Teamed up with the eccentric Professor Challenger, the dubious Professor Summerlee, and the heroic Lord John Roxton, the heroes of the story find themselves immersed in an adventure beyond their wildest dreams. 2) In The Poison Belt, Malone is summoned by Professor Challenger with a cryptic note. It seems that the Earth is moving towards a poisonous section of space, and Challenger hopes that he can rescue himself and his associates-the last people left on Earth. 3) The Terror of Blue John Gap is a short diary telling the story of one man's confrontation with a monster that any modern man knows could not possibly exist. And finally, 4) The Horror of the Heights is another short diary excerpt that tells the story of a daring aviators discovery that the air also has its jungles and predators.

While somewhat dated, these stories are well written and quite exciting. They reflect a world that is now gone, but is quite interesting to read about. Overall, I must say that if you like adventure stories, then you must read this book!
