the Art, Method, Tolerance, and Endurance of Footbinding
So much of the history of "common people" is lost, while history and journalism struggle to record the daily events of the notables. In The Lotus Lovers, Levy makes stars out of ordinary peasant women in China. He begins with the history of this intolerable practice, moves on to discuss the emancipation movements, then goes into the oral histories of the bound women. Any question one might have, from the method to the shoes, to the pain of life on bound feet, is answered in these riveting interviews. I highly recommend this book, as it gives significant insight to a culture so very different from our own. To see the types of shoes worn by these women, I suggest the book Splendid Slippers. Splendid Slippers is a "coffee table" summary of Levy's book.

Very important book & historically correct..
In 1982 I found this book at The Tattered Cover bookstore in Denver, Colorado and I treasure it!! It works beside my copy for Ancestral Roots of 60 Colonists Who Came to America by Frederick Weis. My family documented our pedigree to Anne Dudley Bradstreet through our Hazen bloodline, so upon finding these books we were able to document Anne back to the barons who signed the Magna Charta and many other Royals.. How interesting history has become to us!! Someday I hope to buy both these books for my five grown children...and a couple grandchildren. Dorothy Sherwood Bevard

Golden Years for LC-MS's Radio Missions
A wonderfully detailed and moving account of the life of Dr. Walter A. Maier, professor at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and first speaker for The Lutheran Hour. One gets an idea of the incredible faith, drive and far-sightedness of the man who oversaw the formation of KFUO Radio in radio's infancy, and the trials and triumphs of starting The Lutheran Hour during the Depression, and in the face of those who controlled much of the liberal drivel that characterized religious broadcasting of the time. This book also shows how a theologically conservative Church body embraced the latest technology of the time in Bringing Christ to the Nations. The World War II years are also covered, describing the profound effects of The Lutheran Hour's messages among laity, clergy and our Armed Forces around the world. One is amazed at the tremendous response to the broadcasts by so many, and of the huge Lutheran Hour Rallies that sprung up during the time which will, most likely, never again been seen in such magnitude. For a good overview of the "Golden Years" of Radio for the LC-MS, and for catching a passion for proclaiming the pure Gospel of Jesus Christ today, this book is a must read.

Man's responsibility for nature : ecological problems and Western traditions

Passmore's compelling case for 'conservation'
John Passmore's book first appeared a number of decades ago, but is still setting the agenda for those with a concern for the environment who think that support humanity's actions in living and developing a coherent society and a care for nature are not mutually exclusive concerns. Passmore's argument is basically that man's concern with the tratement of the environment is basically an argument between people and that it is a mistake to assume that nature or animals can have any rights in an area in which they have no consciouness. Passmore contends, (in a very rough way), that rights cannot be bestowed on beings without a consciousness. We may decide to protect the environment for many reason, aesthetic, a desire to sustain bio-diversity, security of resources for medical research, etc. But the essential element in all such decisions is that a human or humans, not an animal or a plant make the decision! As we cannot abrogate to overselves the right of proxy to what a non-sentient animal, plant or habitat which 'desire', we can only make ethical decisions on the basis of human morality as it affects other humans. Therefore, Passsmore contends, we must make our environmental descisions on the basis of 'conserving' the environment for humans, not on 'preserving' it for a nature that can have no awareness of these ethical decisions.

In reality this may make no difference to individual actions- the preservationsist chained to the redwood who wishes to save the tree from the loggers on account of its contribution to nature's spirit, may be joined on his chain by a conservationist who wishes to preserve the tree for the aesthetic benefit of future generations of humanity. Passmore does not condone treating nature as a resource at the total whim of humanity, but of instead the prioritising of mankind's legitimate needs in any equation that involves an intervention in the environment. Thus if a wetland on the edge of a human settlement is a home to a significant malaria-hosting mosquito colony, the 'conservationist' decision whether to drain it will be a balance between the loss of bio-diversity and the healthy of the people of the town. In some cases the decision will fall on draining the swamp, in others the conservationist will say, the wetland should remain on account of its other benefits.

It was the call for new standard of ethics to meet the growing environmentalist movement that promoted Passmore to publish this book. He claims, (and this reviewer finds his claim complelling), that traditional ethical standards are perfectly adequate to meet the challenge of concern for nature. Instead of a new standard based on the rights of nature, Passmore contends, that a more effective and coherent avenue in protecting the environment is in the prosecuting of 'vadalism' -damaging the enviroment without sufficent benefit to mankind.

Since the publication of the book, Passmore stand has been condemed by many in the environmentalist movement, but without in this reviewer's judgement, his case has not been seriously damaged by any of the attacks. To those of us who care deeply for the environment, but also care for the legitimate rights of humanity to live in that environment, Passmore has set the standard. Read this book, even if you disagree it will give much food for thought.

Martin Luther King by Robert E. Jacoubek and Nancy Shuker
The book Martin Luther King by Robert E. Jacoubek and Nancy Shuker demonstrates the amazing struggle Martin Luther King, Jr. and the black community went through to gain the independence and free will their ethnic group deserves. This book is a very good learning device because within the book there is a leadership essay by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. which clearly states what leadership is and how it affects the world. This essay helps you understand what America was like during Mr. King's lifetime.

The authors didn't write much about Martin Luther King's personal life. Instead, they talked about what conflicts he faced and what specific important things he accomplished. This way of writing allowed the reader to learn more about his heroic tasks. The authors wrote in a very factual manner. They gave many examples of what Mr. King accomplished by talking about his conflicts and then explaining the resolution he came up with.

The authors also used a story-telling technique in their book. They told most of the story in a "third person" view. To do this, they properly fit many actual quotations from Mr. King's speeches into the story. This way of writing allows the reader to learn more from the story that is told. The following quotation from the book is one example of this story-telling technique: "King told the crowds at that night's mass meeting: 'Now they know that an injunction will not stop us.'"

This book is great for all ages. The way the authors wrote helped me understand what a hero really was and what characteristics Martin Luther King had to produce such an advancement and to make the world more equal. The book makes you think of questions that influence what a hero really is. When I read the book, I thought of questions like: "Do leaders lead by force or by persuasion" By command or consent?" Raising these basic questions makes you think about the passage and what it really means.

I would recommend this wonderful book to everyone. It expressed Mr. King's story in a very logical manner which made it much easier to read. It showed how hard Martin Luther King worked at helping his ethnic group succeed in life with segregation and mistreatment surrounding their lives. The book taught me never to give up, no matter how difficult the task is and some day you will get what you deserve and worked hard for. In the end, after all the crime and mistreatment that had taken place, Martin Luther King finally pursued his dream and his people are set free.

If you Only Have One Book
Martyn Green was one of the Great D'oyly Carte patter singers. This book has the libretti of all of the shows, except for Utopia and Grand Duke, and Simary arrangements of the music. It is a great first book for any lover of G&S and a must have for anyone with any interest in G&S.

If there would be a criticism, it would be the relative lack of explainations of some of the more obscure words in the cannon, but this can be remedied by reference to the Harry Benford Lexicon (also available from Amazon). And the little bits about production practice which litter the libretti, more than make up for this.

The other drawback is the absurd decision not to keep this book in print.
