The Misfits: And Other Stories (Scribner Signature Edition)

Thought provoking title story
"The Misfits" is reason enough to read this collection. Feeling themselves apart from a materialistic society whose norms they cannot live by, three men who want to be free from the pretenses and profiteering of American business make a living, ironically, by capturing wild horses. The character portrayals are brief but entirely compelling--Guido has lost a wife in childbirth and refuses to work as a pilot for an airline, despite the financial remuneration. 47 year old Gay feels a connectedness with all those on the range, yet cannot connect well with anyone in particular. The young Perce struggles with the morality of capturing the wild horses and provokes Gay's jealousy with his vitality, ability, and the attention Perce receives from Gay's girlfriend. Poetic descriptions of the western landscape also contribute to a fascinating story with many interconnecting elements and ironies. The representations of women may seem offensive at first, but Miller seems to be pointing to a psychological portrait of men on the open range and does not champion or support the men's beliefs about women so much as he uses them to reveal the men's weaknesses through them. A must read, even for those who have no interest in "Western" stories.

What a life she led!
The list of Misia Sert's friends would read like a who's who of the cultural elite of Paris from the end of the Second Empire-World War II. Lautrec, Picasso, Coucteau, Chanel, the whole Ballet Russe crowd, and of course Proust. She was more a muse than creative genius herself, although she was supposed to have played the piano quite well, something we will never know for sure. This book is an enjoyable read and demonstrates just how wonderful life can be if one is good-looking, wealthy and well-connected.

Mojo Rising - Great Memoir & Insider's View of Conjure & Art
I've been a big admirer of Arthur's work since I read his novel, ANOTHER GOOD LOVING BLUES (a terrific blues tale and love story about a piano player from Beale Street who falls hard for a beautiful conjure woman). In MOJO RISING, Flowers talks about how he came to his craft as a writer as well as how he came to conjure and how his practice has impacted both his literary work and his spiritual/political development. It's a fascinating work, well told and certainly worth the long wait! Now for his next novel!

Classic Holmes and Watson!
This broadcast was a classic of the OLD TIME RADIO era. Re-mastered for clean audio anyone who is a fan of the Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce shows will like this well written mystery. For those new to the old radio programs, you will find this tape far superior to current books on cassette with better acting and sound effects.

visual encyclopedia of film history
Do you like old movies? Do you wonder how the whole movie industry got started? Want to see a picture of a naked (young) Peter Fonda?

Now that I got your attention, let's go to the matter of this wonderful book. It's a large "coffee table" type of book, all the pictures are in balck and white - even the wonderful close-up of Liz Taylor in "Reflections in a Golden Eye" and it is quite marvelous to look through.

The book starts off the invention of the "moving pictures" by Edison with the help of his assistant Dickson. It moves from Penny Arcades or Peep Shows (didn't the meaning of that phrase change over the years?) on to kinetoscopeand George Melies. There are scenes from everything from "The Great Train Robbery" as well as "Midnight Cowboy" with many stops inbetween.

There are stills from films of the Nickelodeon age - "Gertie the Dinosaur". one of the first animated films, as well as "The Fighting Roosevelts". There are the reports of the public reaction to "Birth of a Nation" and Griffith's answer to such reports. I was amazed to learn that Harold LLoyd's "human fly" stunt (in "Safety Last", a great film if you can find it) was done with no trick photography, no stunt doubles and onaly a net netween the star of the movie and the street below. That makes that scene seem totally different when you know there wasn't much room to make a mistake.

Of course, the book has many stills of the movies of the Marx Brothers, postwar musicals as well as features on such stars as Eliazabeth Taylor, Sidney Portier and Marilyn Monroe. Various movie styles are featured with stills of the more famous (and not so famous) actors of that type. It is basically a visual encyclopedia of film history.

If you like older movies and want the information on how various effects were accomplished or you want to see pictures of Joan Crawford from various stages of her career, this is the book for you. You can use it as a reference or just look through it on those days and nights when there seems to be nothing good on tv or at the movies. Find it and enjoy it.
