Provides a nice overview but not much depth
This book provides a overview of how the computer operates internally, but lacks in real world or specific examples. Many of the questions/examples are overly generic because the author tries to cover many platforms instead of just one or two major platforms.

Hi Guys!
I have the 1992 edition. This book is not for the Joe Blow 'computer professional'. It is intensely academic. This book is NOT in 'lay' terms...also, it often glazes over EXTREMELY complex topics. The level of diction for this book is fairly high. Not recommended for your dime store MCSE.

A book on Crystal Physics you may want to contemplate to buy
I, recently, borrowed this book from the library and read it. It reminds me the book by Banvangataman (I hope I spelled the name right, I am sorry if I didn't) which also introduces the reader to the application of group theory to crystal physics. The scope of the book is adequate to familiarize the reader with all the main aspects of Crystal Physics and, therefore, the author warrants proper credit for having done a good job. I shall not go into detail of the chapters covered in the book since the treatment is, in my opinion, standard. The explanations and comments throughout the text are to the point. The presentation is clear and easy to comprehend. My only concern about this book is that it lacks numerical examples and solved problems. Group theory and even its applications are very abstract to fully grasp. As a result, the uninitiated reader can find it very difficult to study this subject without reviewing a lot of examples and without working on problems. Regrettably, the book lacks to fulfill the task of presenting the topics to the reader with solid "real life" examples. Hence, this book would not be a very useful textbook. If you are particularily interested in Crystal Physics it might be a good idea to add Dr. Nowotny's book to your collection. On the other hand, if you are planning on learning Crystal Physics via Group Theory, I would suggest you borrow the book from a library, thoroughly inspect it and, then decide on the purchase.

This is a book you need to comprehend the crystal world.
This is a book I would recommend to anybody who wants to comprehend the complex and colorful crystal properties. It takes a stack of books to describe and explain the physical phenomena of crystals and after that you may still wonder why they are so. This book introduces readers to the group representations of symmetry and the derivative properties, making it almost immediately transparent why things appear what they are. Certainly, understanding group theory is not a easy task, you cannot grasp it overnight. The book is organized such that even a person without extensive theoretical physics background will not feel intimidated on what is followed after reading the first couple of chapters. With the right to the point explanations, I found the book not too hard to read, unlike I initially suspected. To my view, this is a book one would have for graduate study in crystal physics or professionals who want serious comprehension of crystal properties. The weak area of this book, as indicated by another reviewer, is probably the lack of extensive numerical examples. However, giving the fact that this is a topics for graduate students and trained professions in science and engineering fields, I would give this book a two thumbs up.

About an almost forgotten New Eng fortune.
Overall the book was an easy read. It was entertaining, albeit a little difficult to follow in some places. It would have helped me if I'd known a little more of the history and lore behind the story, but the book stands alone as a guide to the little known behind the scenes facts.

Hetty Green and the Financial Dilemma
This book profiles the life of Hetty Green, who in the year 1900 was worth $100,000,000. Rumours abound about her idiosyncracies, the most prevalent of which is frugality. Say what you will about Hetty, she was a market genius. She spotted an opportunity before anyone noticed anything was missing. She had foresight, an iron will, and incredible fortitude. Much of this can be attributed to her father and grandfather, who themselves had amassed wealth and shared their secrets with Hetty from the time she was a young girl. Hetty's children, on the other hand, are an odd lott, from Ned Green, who hung a whale's penis on his wall for the sheer amusement factor in that most people did not know what it was, to her daughter Sylvia who was more of a recluse. When Sylvia died, she donated tens of thousands of dollars to those whom she remembered were kind to her. I read it for geneological research, as Hetty and I may be related. However, if a story of building and maintaining wealth through innovation and cunning interests you, you will enjoy this book. I understand, however, that some of the facts may have been embellished. There are other sources of info about Hetty available if you want facts. Enjoy!

Ending Apartheid in America: The Need for a Black Political Party and Reparations Now

Poor arguments
The USA has spent the equivalent of one trillion dollars in social programs whose primary recipients have been african-americans. There is actually plenty of data that suggests that all of that money tore down the african-american family and left it in tatters, where prior to the 1960's. african-american families and communities were relatively intact, drug free, and non-sociopathic. It is the social programs which have created dependency and sociopathy. The authors can forget about reparations because it isn't ever going to happen. The attempt to get them will only polarize the races even more so. In a land of opportunity where even the most recent of immigrants can succeed fantastically, african-americans need to look at themselves and find out what is amiss in their thinking, values, attitudes or behavior that holds them back while everyone else is getting ahead.

Unveiling truth for reparations
There are books that you read and books that you eat...this is one of those books that you eat. The information is so extraodinary that you internalize the information and find yourself referring to the information when confronted with global issues that continue to be problematic and without remedy. The context of the book is not convuluted, therefore it is easy to read and comprehend. As with most books of this genre, it defines how racism exists in relationship to global white supremacy; how it remains operative via politics, foreign policy, education, Christianity, media, print, history and even holidays that are celebrated with vigor in the United States. Mr.Sertoa makes his agrument for reparations in The U.S., by documenting the historical odessey of domination and genocide (intended) to African and Native Americans in this country. He dissects what political parties and participation in these parties, trully mean to minorites in this country. His chapters tackle how and the why of global white supremacy and what steps must be taken to facilitate its demise. So..put down that remote control and feed your mind on the whys and the solutions of combating racism.

Eternal Security
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (February, 1996)
Authors: Arthur W. Pink and Arthur Pinl
Amazon base price: $9.99
Used price: $7.90
Average review score:

Beware of Mr. Pink!
Pink twists and turns his way through the scriptures to come up with another heretical explanation why you can sin your way into the kingdom. Although he refrains from the modern version of this awful doctrine that goes as far to say that you can deny Christ and He won't deny you, the end result remains the same. Attempting to protect the Sovereignty of God these men have sacrificed the responsibility of man to 'continue' in the faith. Therefore such simplistic passages as "By this Gospel you are saved, IF you hold fast to the end" (1Cor15:2) are twisted to say, 'Because you are saved you will hold fast to the end!' But such is the nature of this horrendous teaching that is leading millions into the eternal fires of hell.
Like many of his contemporaries, Pink raises the 'Never saved to begin with' argument, hoping to cloud of issue of 'patient continuance in doing good' (Rom2:7) He explains away the Heb6:1-6 passages in similar manner, saying that 'Partakers' of the Holy Spirit really means they were merely under the 'influence' of the Spirit. Although the SAME word is used elsewhere in Scripture to explain how we are 'Partakers' of Christ, IF we hold fast our confidence steadfast to the end. (Heb3:14) This is just one of numerous examples how the simple text of the Bible are twisted to support false doctrine.
Therefore anyone who falls into heinous sin was 'never' saved to begin with! (although this is NOT the prevalent view among today's Calvinist) This would include Judas of course, the man in 1Cor5:5, the false teachers who 'shipwrecked' their faith and the faith of others in 1Tim1:19-20, 2Tim2:17-18, Demas, 2Tim4:9, the new converts in 2Pet2:18 who had 'escaped indeed', and anyone else who 'departed' from the faith or fell into the error of the wicked.
The difficulty with this argument stems from the fact that it isn't biblical. Paul never suggested these people were 'never' saved to begin with because they sinned. He merely states in numerous passages that such behavior will keep you OUT of the kingdom. That a genuine Christian is incapable of these acts is also off base. Why would the devil try so hard to temp us into sin & error IF our souls were not at stake? If all we stand to lose is our 'rewards' & fellowship, what's the point of a roaring lion? And the struggle against sin stated throughout scripture, Heb12:4, why resist or flee temptation and Strive to keep ourselves Pure, if it doesn't matter? Thus you see the outcome of such preaching. Dead, lukewarm & complacent professing Christians, 'believing' themselves saved while remaining in bondage to sin.
Pink is devious in his approach to this subject. You will get the impression reading his books that he believed whole heatedly in holiness & obedience to the faith. But on a closer examination you find the 'under-laying' message of John Calvin lurking in the pages of this manuscript. Unknowingly he has planted the seeds of our present day apostasy. By promoting the doctrine of 'unconditional' eternal security he has helped lay the foundation for men like Charles Stanley & Billy Graham who soft peddle the message of salvation to millions of lost souls, convincing them that a one time confession of faith will guarantee their entrance into the eternal kingdom!
I recommend you be steadfastly grounded in the faith before you read ANY of Pink's books. He is VERY persuasive in his narrative and has convinced many that the heretical views of John Calvin are biblical. Beware of his subtle twists & turns for they will lead you down the path of destruction if you are not careful.

Perseverance Rediscovered
Arthur Pink's work on Eternal Security is like a double-edged sword swung against the unbiblical errors of both the Wesleyan notion that one can lose his salvation and the modern "carnal Christian" doctrine that supposes one can have salvation without sanctification. Pink's essays (originally published under the title "The Saints Perseverance" in Pink's magazine "Studies in the Scriptures") deals with the doctrinal foundations of the saints security, provides helpful safeguards against extremes and abuses relating to assurance, and gives practical direction on how to "persevere". It is a thoroughly Calvinistic treatment of the subject. While the chapters are uneven in their literary quality, the content is worth reading. This book is a helpful antidote to the sickly condition of modern Christian teaching on eternal security.

Warning: Not ALL Islands Listed
I usually LOVE Frommer's books. Their book on Costa Rica is outstanding and so is their Europe on $50 a day. However, I was a little disappointed with this one. My husband and I are about to travel to the Greek Islands and we wanted to at least see a one page per island description -- even if the description just says "uninhibited, don't travel here.' This one only goes through the main islands. I'm sure it's still a good guide but we wanted to see at least a listing of all the islands. It does give good tips and stuff and I'm sure we'll find them all helpful.

Great reference
I went traveling in Greece 2 years ago and found other travel books to lack info on the Greek Islands and had to struggle my way through the islands. As I am planning to return this summer, I have found this book to be a good reference to prepare, and one that I will bring with me. When most of us think of Greece, the Greek Isles are the place most of us invision. This book gave me a good reference as to where to go, where to stay and what there was to do. I would reccommend this book to others.

Hawaii trip
The cheap eats section of the book was very useful, but the map was not useful at all. It was just a basic map. It had no streets on the map.

Great Guide Book
This book has some great finds such as places to eat (for reasonable amounts). It talks of one place on Maui that's a community college. The students create a four course meal for only $11! It also gave us some great suggestions for where we can spend our honeymoon. I would definitely try out the bed and breakfasts over the "canned" travel agent resorts. Excellent resource for prices on tours & activities. I reviewed at least 6 books on Hawaii and found this one to be the most resourceful. Definitely a keeper!

Gilbert and Sullivan's London
Published in Hardcover by State Mutual Book & Periodical Service, Ltd (November, 1988)
Authors: Andrew Goodman and Robert Hardcastle
Amazon base price: $45.00

Good Travel Guide
Well researched, the book would make an excellent companion on a walking tour of London. The author knows what buildings are still standing from Gilbert and Sullivan's world, which have been demolished, and which have changed. Gives great descriptions of the theaters, including the Savoy, where the productions were staged, and so forth.

If I have a criticism of the book, it is laid out geographically -- so you might be discussing Gilbert in 1876 at one minute and Arthur Sullivan in 1885 at another, because that is where the next building on the street leads you. The continuity suffers a little because of this.

But if you know a Gilbert and Sullivan fan who is making a pilgrimage to London, this is the perfect book for them.

A very fine book-a treasure trove of info on G&S and London
This is a marvelous book. This is a charming account of the relationship between Gilbert and Sullivan (both individually and as collaborators) with London. The author Andrew Goodman (who really knows his stuff) organized this enormous treasure-trove of information by neighborhood. The book gets off to a strong start by reviewing how London developed-it impressed me how much London is a Victorian city, with many famous neighborhoods were all but farmland in the early 19th century. This book is meant not only for lovers of G&S but lovers of London and good travel writing as well.

Heat
Published in Unknown Binding by Heinemann ()
Author: Arthur Herzog

A remarkable journey through an "El-nino" ravaged landscape.
This novel explores some of the psychological and social effects of a severe "global-warming," and how several scientists set out to reverse the process that has destroyed the eco-system as we have come to know it. I read this novel as a teen, and found it to be of interest to anyone who has a thirst for metorlogical mayhem. The sub-plots are typical, but overall it made a fun and interesting read. What would you do if you had to deal with 122 degree weather for more than a week?

Disaster thriller will have you burning through the pages.
Weather abnormalities lead a group of (U.S.) government scientists to a horrifying discovery, the constant polluting of the enviroment has triggered a green house effect that will, come summertime, literally bake thousands of people to death. Herzog extrapolates the effects of the disaster nicely, although many today will find the character and political intrigue rather cliche. Nonetheless it remains a good disaster thriller worth checking out. Recommended.
