A road map for HR practitioners
Diane Arthur's 'Recruiting, Interviewing, Selecting & Orienting New Employees' is a must read! As she writes, "Recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and orienting new employees are specific skills. How well you practice these skills can directly affect many common organizational problems, such as turnover, employee morale, and absenteeism. By carefully implementing the methods described in this book, your organization can greatly improve its employer-employee relations and its level of productivity."

With revised, updated and newly added chapters, this book is a resource full of practical, straightforward samples and explanations of what works and doesn't work.

Highly recommended.

The Regulated Landscape: Lessons on State Land Use Planning from Oregon

An excellent contribution in the study of land use issues
"The Regulated Landscape" is an excellent book that details the state of Oregon's experiments with broad, state level attempts to control land-use. Knaap and Nelson are two long time participants of the debates that accompanied the rise of state sponsored attempts to control landscapes during the 1960s and 1970s. While the book they have produced here may be specific to the Oregon example, it does contain information that is applicable to many other regions (such as my own area of study; British Columbia) across the continent. Most notable in this regard is the section on the politics of land use planning. The authors identify the various schools of thought that have contributed to the debate of the last 30-35 years (Structuralist, Institutionalist and Marxist) and seek to debunk some of the myths that have arisen. Such as the belief that the "class based theory of growth politics" may not be appropriate as a defining motive for the state to assume control of land use planning. Regardless of your own beliefs on this subject I highly recommend this book! Even if you are not entirely interested in Oregon, the bibliography that has been provided can be used to identify some of the other major contributions and contributors (be it in book form, articles, or government publications) to the issue of land use. Enjoy!

Religion, Dress and the Body (Dress, Body, Culture Series)

Fascinating Look at Culture
This book lets us peek into the way cultures that have a religious base actually use clothing to express cultural values. The relationship between identity and how it is manifested by people and groups is the focus of this exciting book. Each chapter is by a different author who has done serious research. Some are historical studies, though most are ethnographic, an in-depth form of research. The American religious groups covered in the book include Amish, Mennonite, Mormon, Jewish, Catholic Nuns, African-American, Native American and even Muslims in Omaha.

Even though this book was done by scholars, it is easy to read and is quite enjoyable.

Renaissance Drama: An Anthology of Plays and Entertainments (Blackwell Anthologies)

Yes, Virginia, there is more to life than Shakespeare....
A good collection of drama other than Shakespeare. Too often, there is too much of an emphasis on Shakespeare. Many modern students couldn't even begin to name three other major playwrights, much less a short list of what Marlowe wrote. I had to purchase this book for a University of Kentucky English course, but as a future high school English teacher, I am adding it to my own collection as a valuable asset.

Repentance

REPENTANCE IS REQUIRED
This book is for those who have a true love of scripture, who believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and who want to read commentaries on and expositions of biblical subjects that are extensively backed up by scripture references. Arthur Pink is a master of this style of biblical exposition whose writings have great favor with many authorities on scripture. He makes a definitive case for the necessity of Repentance, explains clearly exactly what it is and is not, and gives life applications that are, in my opinion invaluable. If anyone wants to learn about, or clarify their thinking about Repentance, I recommend this book without reservation.

Bring this gem back into print
This book is one of a series X Does the Strangest Things - a series for early readers which introduces them to nature and science in an entertaining way. The writing is active and appealing to its audience "Swoosh! A great load of water rushes in. A fish gets swept in, too. Then the matamata spits our the water. But he doesn't spit out the fish!"

There is a wonderful selection of animals - some from everyday life, some seen at zoos or encountered in stories and some true exotics.

Research on Educational Innovations

Consumer reports for education policy makers
I agree with the publisher's summary of this compact compendium. I particularly appreciate its lucid explanation of what different levels of research are and aren't--helpful to educators and non-educators alike for deciding perhaps what innovations would best serve the community.

It is particularly good exposing some of the assumptions that are shared in the press about some 'best practices', and about the background of some ideas that have taken the country by storm and become standard without having any research or theoretical base.

I would add that it is a very readable book for being primarily a reference to other works, with a voice that is very conversational without sacrificing any of its scholarly authority. It is even opinionated about forming opinions.

The book does not have as slick a look as some, which kind of adds to its authenticity as an earnest effort to get the facts out there so you can make up your own mind. You will, too, for they actually teach you how to consider the evidence and form a conclusion.

I would think this will be updated every couple years. It should be a standard reference for school board members as well as all those master of education courses.
