After reading two of Joyce McPherson's other books, I knew I was in for a treat when I picked up River of Grace, the biography of John Calvin. While the language is easily understandable for a child, it holds the interest of the adult. I have even seen my husband, who rarely picks up a book, reading this one. John Calvin is famous as a theologian, but I found out lots of things that I didn't know about him. It made his life come alive for me.

John Newmeyer has, once again, written witty, intelligent, thoughtful, and thought-provoking essays speaking to a wide cross section of readers. There is something for everyone. I really enjoy the fact that the author can speak about any subject...science...animals...numbers...driving...whatever...and make it resonate with one's own experiences and/or provide an interesting/alternative way of looking at that subject. It made me laugh and think at the same time. I highly recommend this compilation of essays to anyone who enjoys hearing/reading unique voices in a world whose din is often a trite refrain.

At times, this book brought me to tears and I had to put it down momentarily. No other work has affected me in this way.
This book is probably the premier self-help work of its time, largely due to lack of self-deluding arrogance found in its contemporaries. Dr. Peck's prescriptions cross cultural and religious boundaries, making it applicable to persons of any religious upbringing (or lack thereof).
The book makes no easy promises but it was a wealth of hope 20 years ago for someone who had none.

This gives great insight to believers in Christ Jesus and Expounds on the Book of Romans. It explains Condemnation: The wrath of God revealed, Salvation: The righteousness of God revealed, Vindication: The wisdom of God revealed, and Exhortation: The will Of God revealed.

As indicated by the title of Boice's four volumes on Romans, this is an expositional commentary. Not only does Boice give the reader a sufficient depth of understanding in the text, but especially helpful to those who are teaching through Romans are his illustrations and the organization of his material into a "preachable" style. And though the average Bible student will need other more technical commentaries to flush out his/her understanding of Romans, we find ourselves turning to Boice more and more.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was a bit more entertaining than other Grace Livingston Hill novels. The heroine, Rose, was an interesting person. I also liked that it followed the hero's story along with Rose's. The author's love for Jesus was not hidden from sight, but an important aspect to the novel's resolution. I would recommend this for anyone who considers themselves a hopeless romantic and a lover of Jesus.

This is basically an old fashioned who-dunnit, and very cleverly it is intwined with a moral, and a very clever plot. I won't give any of it away, but just to whet your appetite a little.

Colin Dye is a brilliant writer!!! ...

..."Salvation by Grace" is brilliantly constructed with some marvellous characters. There's Grace herself, who, when confronted by the mystery of the missing money from the Building Fund of the new temple, [a veritable Valhalla], works through how and why the money was taken. And then there's Viole, who can't quite come to terms with the rejection of her Jewish background whilst embracing her Born Again stance, allied with her penchant for Wagner and betting on the dogs. Dye's description of her eyes is both witty and insightful: "Her eyes were full of the wistful regret of one who loves dogs more than humans, entrenched there with the knowledge that no dog of her choice could ever manage to win the 8.10 at White City." This is brilliant prose.

The scene on the roof of the temple is frightening in it's realism. All comes right in the end, and it's Salvation by Grace!

Dr. Lewis Sperry Chafer was used by the Lord as a champion of grace. And I have no doubt that this continues even today....long after Dr. Chafer has gone to be with the Lord. I recommend this book both to unbeliever and believer alike. I have never read a more comprehensive book explaining the marvelous salvation that God offers the whole world through simple faith in Jesus Christ!!!

I am very interested in reading restaurant reviews. We dine out very often, and found Gayot's guide to be very right on target. It was great to find a guidebook that also included wine country dining, as Sonoma County is an important and exciting area for food and wine. The reviewers were not biased towards famous or trendy restaurants. They mention several not yet well known "jewels" for the reader to discover. Much better than Fodor's or Zaggat's.
