Girl of the Woods

Refreshing . . . and realistic up to a point
I am not big into romance novels, and have always found Grace Livingston Hill's books to have too many idealized people . . . too good to be true at times.

Fortunately, the hero and heroine of this story seem realistically human, although they are still portrayed as being nicer than most people you meet.

It is worth reading, and provides wholesome entertainment where nowadays it is sadly lacking.

Worth it
A very good one-volume systematic theology from a Wesleyan perspective. Callen's writing style can be a bit turgid at times, but the book is well worth the sometimes difficult read.

A competent and insightful book
Stephen R. Holmes demonstrates a comprehensive and competent knowledge of Jonathan Edwards' theology. Holmes examines the influence of the Enlightenment and men such as Locke and Newton as well as giving attention to Edwards' firm place in the Purtian and Reformed traditions of the church. He also demonstrates a thorough knowledge of everything Edwards penned; from the musings in Edwards' miscellanies to his published arguments in the Freedom of the Will,Original Sin and others. For Holmes, the center of Edwards' thought is on God's glory and how everything in Trinitarian relations and creation serves it.
Edwards seeks to describe everthing in a way that gives glory to God. Holmes finds many of Edwards' arguments compelling but believes Edwards' understanding of election, hell and punishment do not contribute to the overall scheme of God's glory.

God's Awesome Grace is Awesome
This is a great book in presenting the teachings of God's Grace in dealing with the human race. The author has researched not only the Scripture's but also the writings of several theologians, even quoting from those writings.

I basicly agreed with the tenants of this book even before I read it, but then seeing it in Scripture and in the writings of several great theologians gave me a stronger understanding of just how wonderful God's Grace truly is!

Nice Crumb Overview
For those new to the work of R. Crumb or those who want a compilation of "women" drawings this is a nice book. Great productions values: the cover, endpapers, binding, paper stock are all first class. The reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because there is very little work from recent years. I counted 6 drawings from 2002, 5 drawings from 2001, and only 2 from 2000. (There are no drawings from 2003). Most of the material is from the 1980's. I would have liked a more even sampling of material throughout the years and would have really been interested to see what new and recent work (if any) he's been doing on the subject of women. If you have the Crumb german sketchbooks, or are collecting the Fantagraphics sketchbooks then there's really no need for this. This is a good "general interest" Crumb collection.

Grace and Favor

A sensitive reflective novel that rewards the careful reade
Grace and Favor is an intriguing novel and well worth the read. Mr Caplan captures well the sense of anxiety that besets those of us who attempt to wend our way through the thicket of English society. It is, as Mr Caplan's character John Brook might have admitted, something of an emotional roller-coaster as one is alternately assured of one's place and then reminded that one is at best a tolerated temporary visitor. The popular usage of 'grace and favour' refers to large country estates, the use of which is granted to high government officials during their time in office. Chequers, for example, is the 'grace and favour' estate of the Prime Minister; and a snap election could displace the occupant from a 'grace and favour' estate less than four weeks after the dissolution of parliament. The title seems meant to evoke the sense in which John Brook feels he is only present at Castlemorland by the grace and favour of his wife and her family. The book is a sensitive and reflective exploration of Brook's search for a sense of belonging more permanent than a 'grace and favour' situation can allow.

Bhakti poetry with a touch on tantra
If you are unfamiliar with the ecstatic religious poetry tradition - Rumi, Mirabai, ... this is not the volume to start on; read Mirabai's For Love of the Dark One first. However, if you have some familarity with the tradition, you'll find this book fascinating - this is more recent (18th century) and closer to the tribal origins of the worship of Kali/Uma/Pavarti/Gauri/Tara. These poems are popular in the sense that they have been kept alive through oral transmission rather than written manuscripts. One poem with a surprising rural flavor stands out: ".../My body is Tara's field/ in which the God of Gods/ like a good farmer / sows his seed with a great mantra. / Around this body, faith / is set like a fence / with patience for posts ..."

Radical Grace - a way of life
Radical Grace is the name of the newspaper published by the Center for Action and Contemplation, an institute established by Rohr in New Mexico. The essays in this collection are taken from that newspaper and are of varying interest. Rohr's contributions in general stand head and shoulders above the rest of the offerings in the book although there are a couple of moments of inspiration from the laity.

Grace in Every Season: Through the Year With Catherine Doherty
Published in Paperback by Madonna House Pubns (January, 1995)
Author: Mary Bazzett
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $8.98
Average review score:

A daily dose of Catherine's spirituality.
Catherine Doherty lived the core of a christian's life. She was not afraid to speak out on behalf of the gospel of Jesus Christ. These reflections keep you challenged to live out your baptism, to stand up and be counted, to become all that God asks you to become. There is no lip service to this women's life, she walked the talk, like Dorothy Day, Mother Teresa and Gandhi she left us a great legacy of continuing the journey, the pilgrim's journey.
