Lucid and to the point
Liturgical musician and Christian mystic Rosemary Silversteen writes in a style that is simple yet reminiscent of Saint Therese of Liseux. The prayers in the back of the book are deep yet
clear and for me, that was the part of the book I have found to
be especially good. Reverend Rhonda Matthews, The Community of Christ. Abba Ministries of Canada.

Highly recommended
If the real test of how good a book is if you are exicited to pick it up and dissapointed when you have to put it down then I, Grace Note is a very good book. It follows a sometimes unsypathetic stuggling musician and her sometimes unsypathetic friends through a few months of her life in New York City. Living in New York is unlike living anywhere else and this book captured that wonderfuly. The author was able to capture the narrators feelings brilliantly, a perfect example being a scene where the protangonist ran a full gammett of emotions from exicted to rational to annoyed and finally to acceptance as she waited in her apartment for her date who never shows up. The book's humor is sometimes hysterical and sometimes contrived but it never slows up and keeps you wondering till the last page what is going to happen next. I highly recommend it.

A Depression-Spirituality Connection
Susan Gregg-Schroeder is an ordained minister who has suffered with depression, however, she notes the importance of living WITH depression, not simply having it or recovering from it. This book is very different from books that address depression as something to overcome. Instead of offering a victory scenario, Gregg-Schroeder invites readers to sit with God in the midst of our pain and to notice that spiritual gifts are also present in the midst of that depression. She speaks of the grace received, an acutely-taken perspective on depression that reminds me of Kathleen Norris's odd take on Dakota and spiritual geography.

This book is for people in the midst of depression--whether one's own or that of a loved one.

Infant Baptism and the Covenant of Grace: An Appraisal of the Argument That As Infants Were Once Circumcised, So They Shoud Now Be Baptized

Well researched, but beware of his bias.
Dr. Jewett's book is something that anyone interested in infant baptism should read. This book examines the historical evolution of infant baptism, the scriptural arguments, and the theological arguments. It is highly informative and reads like a thesis. If you are at all interested in infant baptism, READ THIS BOOK.

The problem with this work is that Dr. Jewett makes conclusions where the evidence is not necessary conclusory. For instance, he analyzes history and concludes that infant baptism was not a practice of the apostles, yet such a concusion is just one INFERENCE that could be made after taking in all the evidence. However, it should be noted that such conclusions are probably the best that anyone could do in reaching a definitive answer to an age-old issue.

The reason for Dr. Jewett's approach is clearly that he has made his decision from the beginning. This book reads like he has already made his decision, and whatever it takes, he is GOING to push the round peg into a square hole.

However, I would highly recommend this book for two reasons. First, the sheer amount of research and information provided by the author is worth taking a look at. Second, his arguments will better help anyone to refine their thoughts, from either an experienced theologian or a novice.

My lone criticism of this book, other than I believe it reaches an incorrect conclusion, is that he should have tried to be more objective, and avoided any language that would indicate his view was already biased from the start.

A good introduction for beginners
Helene Petrovna Blavatsky has a common sense approach to magik and it's practices. This is a good mid-level introduction into pagan 'secrets', with well written examples for your own rituals.

British Kinsey
I picked up this book because of the comparisons of the heroine to Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum. Instead, I found that Grace Smith could be the British counterpart to Sue Grafton's character, Kinsey Milhone. The book is entertaining and well written, but left me wondering about the heroine's lifestyle. I suppose if Evan decides to write 24 more books in the series like Grafton has committed to, we'll find out more about the reasons for Smith's eccentric lifestyle.

The Journey of the Eldest Son
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (June, 1967)
Author: Jennifer Grace Fyson
Amazon base price: $4.95
Average review score:

The beginning of a spiritual odyssey
In this sequel to the excellent The Three Brother of Ur, the author traces the odyssey of Shamashazir, the eldest brother. As he sets off on his first trading expedition, Shamashazir wrestles with the family's recent adventure with the breaking of the family teraphim (or guardian-spirit idol). When he becomes separated from the expedition, and is thought dead, he falls in with a nomadic tribe that worships The One True God; apparently the god of his forefathers. This is the story of Shamashazir's physical odyssey across the Fertile Crescent, and his spiritual odyssey towards the One True God.

Being interested in ancient Sumer, I was very happy to read Jennifer Fyson's earlier book, which was so rich in detail on daily life. This book is entirely different. Set in the wilder areas outside of Sumer, it shows the interaction of Sumerians and other peoples. More though, this book is a religious book that gives a realistic, and fascinating beginning to the ancient story of Abraham, who left Ur and founded a whole new religion.

Overall, I found this to be interesting, telling a fascinating story. If you are interested in ancient Sumer and Akkad, or in the patriarch Abraham, then I highly recommend this book to you.

Excellent resource
Grace Jantzen presents a thorough, interesting background of Julian's place, time, and spirituality. It is especially valuable because, unlike many other contemporary books on the topic, it is not speculative - conclusions can be trusted because no half truths are justified. Excellent scholarly work. Only the political correctness in the introduction is a bit boring.
