A wonderful story!
This story is a Grace Livingston Hill rarity, in which the main character does not find a husband/wife at the end of the story. Lucretia "Crete" Ward is a nice old lady who lives with her sister Carrie and niece Luella, both of whom are very selfish and treat her like a slave. Upon learning that Donald, the son of their now-deceased older sister, is coming to visit from out west, Luella fears what others will think of them if they are seen with a "backwoods cousin," so she and her mother hurry away to a fancy resort where Luella is anxious to pursue a young man she is convinced is interested in her, which proves to be all in her head. Donald is actually well-educated and rich, and loves Aunt Crete like a mother, taking her shopping for fancy clothes and paying for French maids to fix up her hair, and then to the very resort where Luella and Carrie are staying. At first they believe Aunt Crete must be rich and famous because she seems to have the best of everything and makes friends with the family of the young man Luella has her heart set on. When they finally recognize her, they try to order Aunt Crete to leave before she "embarasses" them. Donald takes her traveling elsewhere, and she never returns to the women who mistreated her.

Great Cultural Notes for the Visitor
This book really grew on me. I bought it in its first publication by Hong Kong's 'The Guidebook Company' in 1990, along with the usual Lonely Planet and an updated version of Bill Dalton's extremely hefty Indonesia guide. (I first took his book to Indonesia in '79, and his guide continues to be invaluable to the drifting back packer and serious off-the-beaten-tracker, but that type of guide may be overkill for the package traveller to Bali).

I find I keep returning to Charlés book for cultural references. Whereas the Lonely Planet and Dalton are great for planning where to stay and how to get around, and they're chockablock with data, data, data, this little gem of a book is a great if simple tool for planning cultural events and jaunts. It's laid out in an attractive fashion, with all kinds of great photos. Very interesting sidebars highlight personalities, artists, or historical events. It's light enough to be the only guide book you might need, especially if you plan to stay in one place (as on a package deal) and confine your forays into different villages and beaches to day trips only.

So if you are limited in your time in Bali, and you have to plan your days with care, spend a week or two with this book before you go, and it will quickly guide you to the things that interest you most.

Baudrillard's Challenge: A Feminist Reading
Published in Paperback by Routledge (July, 2000)
Author: Victoria Grace
Amazon base price: $31.95
Average review score:

Extremely Comprehensive
This book not only gives a comprehensive understanding of Baudrillard's concepts of reversion and simulation, but deals with practically every criticism of Baudrillard systematically and concretely. The explanation of the implications for feminism are clear and weaved skillfully throughout the book, though anyone interested in Baudrillard for non-feminist reasons should try this book.

More plot "turns" than San Francisco's Lombard Street!
Cyril Gordon hides himself in another man's place during a wedding. Can he "pull it off"? And what will happen if he succeeds? How will be step away once he is safe? That is, if Cyril can step away from the beautiful, tragic bride whom he wants to protect from the groom. This plot is more fun than a joy-ride through the country in Grandpa's Cadillac: Nothing predictable and very satisfying when it's finished.

Enjoy this delightful story!
This simple little story is tailored for beginning readers, but the reassuring and loving attitude of Ms Darcy warms the hearts of my husband and mine. We've all been there. Remember ourselves being kids? Like Bunny, we had the strongest sense of self - we loved being the center of attention; we hated to be laughed at our foolishness; we were reluctant or actually afraid to ask questions from our stern teachers although we were trained to follow instructions. The only difference, maybe, instead of being hugged and comforted, we would be punished for the mess we made up.

I wish our kids would all meet a kind-hearted teacher like Ms Darcy, other than a pure disciplinarian, to make them feel secure in this changeable world.

So....what is normal?
This is what Billie-Girl asks. This is a sweet story about a girl coming of age, seemingly untouched by the chaos in her family's home - her parents' divorce, her father's gambling debts. The author populates this novel with a collection of characters one will not soon forget, and takes us for a humorous joyride through the adventures of one "normal" teenager named Billie-Girl.

This is very valuable book for anyone who has had a "fall".
Something happened to me recently that caused me to question everything I once believed. I was filled with shame and remorse and felt I could never look anyone I knew in the eyes again. After reading this book and following the recommendations of the author I came to realize that something good can come out of bad and that even our biggest mistakes can teach us important lessons if we are willing to pay attention. I recommend this book for anyone who has experienced a failure, a loss, or the shame of an arrest, a bankruptcy, or any other humiliating experience. The book will give you real hope and reading the stories of others who've had similar experiences will make you feel less alone. The book also helps you to forgive yourself and ask for forgiveness from others.

A sheer delight to read
This is a collection of fifty-one personal essays about living (and dying) in the southwest that will leave you angry, sad, happy, disillusioned, and hopeful. But beware: if you are looking for a touchy-feely, I'm OK-Your OK collection, this is not for you. These essays are opinionated, sometimes in-your-face, always passionate critical critiques of living in the contemporary southwest that are a sheer delight to read. In pieces ranging from aging, gambling, land development and nature to the demise of local businesses and the joy of shopping in downtown Flagstaff, AZ., the reader is treated to one woman's opinions in a thoughtful, clear, and highly readable manner. Sojourner is destined to be a major player in the environmental, activists' genre. Highly recommended.
