More for older kids.
I got this book when my son was around 2 years old. He would never sit through it. It is a story and requires some time to read. At 2 yrs old he did not have time for it. Unlike all his other Barney books, this one is an actual story and is not one sentence or word per page. Now, he is almost 4 and the book is a favorite. He loves to hear the story of Barney and his friend.

Korean mind, yes. American mind, no.
This guy is remarkably insightful when it comes to the Korean mind. Having three names, it is pretty clear he is from the Old World. So we should not be surprised he doesn't have a clue when it comes to the New World. We quote from page 210, "...about a quarter of all adult men belong to the country's T'aekwondo Association. This is, in short, not a country in which to get into a brawl, for whatever reason, as many a drunken GI in Yongsan has learned." Let's not get carried away with the mystery of the Orient, Mr. Howe. As a "GI" in the 80s and 90s I had my share of encounters with T'aekwondo "Masters". Although I'm a little guy by American standards (5'6", 170), they always retreated in pain. There are disadvantages to being 5'4", 130 pounds. Having said that, I really enjoyed the country and the people. They are, as a rule, nice people. Mr. Howe is a pretty good psychologist and sociologist....just doesn't know a damn thing about bar room brawls.

Lone Point
A family in turmoil ends up blessed by a summer at Lone Point. Although much of the story is standard Grace Livingston Hill--a once-wealthy family coming on hard times, a summer at the shore, a troublesome family member, and romantic interest--there is a very surprising and compelling story line twist here that involves the unlikely and very genuine spiritual awakening of one of the main characters. Very good depiction of the struggle that leads to a soul's realization of its need of God. That story line alone is worth reading over and over.

It's all in your perspective.
Grace Livingston Hill is one of my favorite authors because she writes real-life crises of faith into her stories. They challenge me in my faith. this one is no exception. Two sisters with two different perspectives on their circumstances. tHeir family has run into some financial straits and they are forced to rent their home in a nice section of town and move to a cottage for the summer in a not so nice section of a resort island. Maria is horrified and ends up moping the whole summer, while Rachel makes the best of it and makes great friends and memories. A young minister enters the scene and helps Maria get outside of herself.

Author looks at communion from a reverent perspective
All too often, those who partake of the Lord's Supper do so casually, often forgetting that not only does the Lord despise vain repetition, but also that the Lord's table is not to be approached casually at all. Pastor Keddie in this book explains exactly why. He reminds us that in 1 Cor. 11 Paul warned the Corinthian church to avoid "eating and drinking judgment" on themselves and that they ought to have a discerning heart when approaching the Lord's table. The Lord's Supper is intended only for believers and Pastor Keddie reminds us that the church is to guard against those outside the visible body.

Jesus Christ instituted the Supper as a means of communion with him and with fellow believers. It's a witness to the world that we believe that Christ lived, died and will come again, in power and in glory.

If you're looking for a treatment of the Lord's Supper that is sincere and thought provoking, but above all Biblical, then read this book.

Finally, I only rated the book 4 stars because, well, we're never perfect in this life!

A good story for beginning readers.
The simple words, and rhyme and rythm of the text make this a good choice for kids who are learning to read on their own. They will also appreciate the school dilemma. First we see what each child has brought for lunch. Then Sam discovers that his lunch box is empty - his mother forgot to pack his lunch. All Sam's friends pitch in to provide him with samples from their lunches, and Sam winds up with a feast. It's a nice story about sharing and solving problems.

God's Love Works Miracles
The Man of The Desert is charming story set in the vast Arizona desert. Hazel, a wealthy society girl gets stranded when a would be lover tries to take advantage of the situation. Miracles happen when God sends his faithful servant, John Brownleigh, to her rescue. Brownleigh immediately finds the girl of his dreams, but he fails to see that his love is returned and lets her go home. There, another miracle occurs when she meets his mother and the faithful mother introduces her to God. As the mother leaves for her heavenly home, she sends her son a letter with Hazel as the delivery messenger not realizing that Hazel and John have already met. Hazel and John are finally reunited and God's miracle of love reigns.

Grace Livingston Hill's books are inspirational. This is the type literature that today's generation needs to bring them to the throne of God. I hope Mrs. Hill's descendants enjoy her writings as much as I do!

Compelling historical detail
Sir Walter Maltravers is haunted by the memory of his failure during the fall of Constantinople, and by his failure at the Battle of Towton. Despite his wealth, his beautiful wife, and the holy Lacrima Christi--a ruby said to have been formed from the blood of Jesus--he lives in agony and in guilt. When he is found dead and his jewel is stolen, Kathryn Swinbrooke is called in to administer the King's justice.

Danger, more murder, and more locked room mysteries confront Kathryn as she investigates. Maltravers was killed in the middle of a maze to which only he knew the secret. The jewel was kept in a locked room in a guarded monastery. A thief vanishs from a locked church. It seems that perhaps the avenging angels truly have stepped in. Certainly all of the suspects have alibies that cannot be shaken. Yet Kathryn diagnoses murder, not God's justice. She's determined to unravel the maze of death and murder and find the killer hiding in its depths.

Author C. L. Grace makes the middle ages come alive. Set during the English War of the Roses, A MAZE OF MURDERS convincingly describes English justice of the time, the (mixed) role of women, contemporary medicine, and the ambiguous nature of justice in a time when patriotism and treason are distinguishable only after a battle is fought and lost. Kathryn's dogged determination to solve a host of locked room mysteries is admirable and sympathetic.

I would have preferred to see better motivation for the final murder--which seems to exist only to give Kathryn the final clues she needs to the solution. Also, I suspect that Kathryn's mild flirtation with her fiance, Colum Murtagh, is intended to humanize Kathryn. Instead, it seemed cloying, distracting from the murder without adding anything to the story. Notwithstanding these flaws, A MAZE OF MURDER makes enjoyable reading.
