The Only Way to Learn About Relationships: Synastry Techniques
Published in Paperback by ACS Publications (01 June, 1992)
Authors: Marion D. March and Joan McEvers
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

A pretty good way to learn, but not the only way...
Published in 1992, this book is volume V of "The Only Way To Learn Astrology" series. However, the title is a bit of a misnomer in this case because the techniques in this book are definitely not the only way to learn about relationships, so the material is a bit dated. Nonetheless, the two authors McEvers and March (who is now deceased) are very lucid and insightful, so their books are a pleasure to read, and their astrology series is good for beginners. In this book you will be introduced to relationship analysis through the techniques of synastry and composite charts. However, the presentation of this subject is quite different here than in any other text that I've read.

The book begins by examining the individual chart and the individual's needs in a partnership. Hence, the text starts by discussing 1st house and 7th house needs through the twelve signs. The problem is that the actual analysis of these houses are revealed through examples rather than through clearly stated and in depth evaluations of the houses and the planets that are found therein. If you enjoy learning by example, then this approach will be great for you. In fact, the McEvers and March astrology series are fantastic resources for birth information on famous people (which was contributed by Lois Rodden, the owner of the largest data base on accurate famous births), so not only will you learn by example but you'll get accurate birth information for such people as Sophia Loren, Carlo Ponti, the 60's group The Doors, Princess Caroline, Princess Diana, et al. But at times I found myself wishing for more explanation and fewer examples; i.e. more depth. The overviews of the houses and themes connected with partnership were always very brief explanations followed by analysis of actual cases. Some of the examples were helpful, while other examples gave birth to more questions. In terms of presenting how chart analysis is done, this book is really great. However, if you need a step by step in depth explanation on how to do analysis, then you may feel only moderately satisfied with these authors' approach. All in all, I really like this book because it covers a lot of ground, and it's nice to explore astrology by example. I can't think of any other book that presents relationships in the way these authors do, so I would recommend this book as an innovative and frequently insightful approach worthy of adding to your collection, but I would not recommend this book as the only book for you to own on the topic of relationship analysis. I give this book five stars because it contains quite a bit of useful celebrity data, which is complete and accurate.

Organic and Compost-Based Growing Media for Tree Seedling Nurseries (World Bank Technical Paper, No 264. Forestry Series)
Published in Paperback by World Bank (May, 1995)

Amazon base price: $22.00

Good reference and "how-to" guide
The use of 100% organic potting media is one sure way to produce nursery stock with a good, dense fibrous root system. This book is a good "how-to" for nursery managers serious about producing large quantities of compost for their tree nurseries. The book explains why the use of 100% organic mixes is desirable and how to produce them. The book is primarily intended for forest nursery managers in developing countries, but is applicable anywhere.

The orphans find a home : a St. Frances Xavier Cabrini story

Great Historical Fiction about an American Saint
This book takes the reader on a spiritual journey alongside three orphaned immigrant girls in 1890 New York City. Fortunately for the little girls they are found by Mother Cabrini. The future saint takes them into her orphanage where they are provided with love, food, and an education. The story is filled with moral lessons, but is still fun to read. My children (11, 9, 7, and 5) all loved this book. The author does a good job researching her subject matter and includes a section at the end of the book with factual information and actual photographs of the orphanage and Mother Cabrini.

Our Mighty Fortress: Finding Refuge in God

Seeing God as My Refuge
This is a great book. Joan Esherick has used the imagery of a medieval fortress to draw me step-by-step into the heart of God--a heart that wants to be a refuge for me.

I especially appreciate Joan's vulnerability in sharing her personal examples--times that show how she has realized her need for God and how He has been a refuge for her. These examples draw me in. I also love the many Bible references that show me how much God cares.

At the end of each chapter are questions that helped me focus on the contents and summarize them in my mind. I can also see them being great for using this book as a small-group study. The "framework" of a medieval fortress helps pull the whole book together.

A vivid, highly recommended pick
Joan Mitchell was one of the more notable painters of Abstract Expressionism in the period between 1950-1980, yet her fame has until now been largely restricted to professional circles. The collaborative effort of Jane Livingston, Linda Nochlin, Yvette Lee, Maxwell L. Anderson, Paintings Of Joan Mitchell is published to accompany a major exhibition at the Whitney Museum, and offers full-page color plates of Mitchell's paintings to accompany further insights on her craft and achievements. A vivid, highly recommended pick which stands alone from its exhibit foundations.

This is such a sweet book!
This book about pajama parties recalls wonderful childhood experiences sharing secrets and staying up late with my girl friends. My daughter is enjoying these experiences herself now. She gave this book to her six friends at her pj party, as party favors. And they all tried their best to stay up all night, (but didn't make it) just like in the book.

A wonderful young adult historical novel.
Sixteen-year-old Marguerite de La Rocque lives in a strict Huguenot household in France in 1542. She is in love with a young man named Pierre, but they can never marry because he is catholic. When Marguerite's father tells her that she will be part of her uncle's colony in the desolate new world of Canada, she at least feels hope, because in the wilderness, she and Pierre might find a way to be together. Pierre has found a way to join the expedition, and Marguerite is accompanied by her maid, Damienne, who is more friend than servant. So though she fears the wild new land their ship is sailing for, she knows she won't be alone. All goes well until after they arrive in Canada, when Marguerite's uncle discovers she and Pierre have become lovers. Furious, he has Marguerite and Damienne abandoned on a desolate island known as the Isle of Demons. Pierre manages to join them, but will friendship, faith, love, and determination to survive be enough to keep the three alive in this desolate wilderness? I highly recommend this book to young adults who enjoy historical fiction. It's a wonderful story of friendship, love, and courage.

A Passion for Life: Fragments of the Face of God
Published in Hardcover by Orbis Books (September, 1996)
Authors: Joan D. Chittister and Robert Lentz
Amazon base price: $30.00
Average review score:

Radiant
In "A Passion for Life", theologian Joan Chittister and artist and iconographer, Robert Lentz, combine to illustrate and describe the lives of twenty-one major figures of the last two millennia.

These choices are not conventional, and though some of them may are familiar, others are obscure. Many of these icons were not Catholic, some not Christian. All, however, were profoundly influential, and served to transform their societies and those following them: whether through martyrdom, like Oscar Romero, or from the walls of her cell, like Julian of Norwich. Both Lentz's beautiful illustrations and Chittister's essays provide inspiration and food for contemplation and thought. A wonderful collection.

My thoughts on A Pebble and A Pen
I had read the book, Pebble and a Pen, for a school project. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I could relate people I know to the character Matty and the people in her life. One of my favorite parts in the book was at the Forth of July Day festival. So much happened to her then. Matty had never been to something big like this, so it was a unique experience for her. This book keeps you in wonder as to what will happen next in Matty's eventful life. Matty had so much courage to do what her heart desired. Not many people believed in her, but to her all that mattered was that she believed in herself. In a class of all adolescence boys, she had to proved to them that she could do just as well as they could. It took her all the time she was at the Spencerian school to gain respect from her classmates. This book truly demonstrates the author knowledge of the time period and the subject addressed. It also shows her truly unique descriptive writing style. Overall this was a terrific, well-written book. I encourage people to read this book and go for their dreams.
