The Rough Riders: What they wore; What they carried
In the years since 1898, the Spanish-American War has been a frequent book theme. The focus has been upon the politics, the strategy, the battles, the role of Theodore Roosevelt, and the emergence of America as a world power. A few tell also of the Rough Riders--the men of the west and southwest, recruited from the American Territories--Arizona, New Mexico, Indian Territory, Oklahoma--who became the First Regiment, U.S. Volunteers, and fought in the Cuban campaign.

J. C. Stewart's book, "Cowboys in Uniform" is another Spanish-American war book. It is one of several published in 1998--the centennial year of what became known as "a splendid little war." However, this book is different. Its theme is the personal possessions of the ordinary trooper: the khaki uniform, the haversack that contained the trooper's food and property, the Krag-Jorgenson rifle and its smokeless powder cartridge, and more.

The book explains how these men, originally recruited for service in a cavalry regiment were ordered to Cuba without their horses, to fight dismounted. This order was a significant change. After all, these were men recruited for their horsemanship, as well as their experience with firearms, and ability to live and work outdoors--and out of saddlbags--in inhospitable territory. Basically, these were men who practiced the physical arts and skills of the West.

Here are detailed descriptions of the clothing worn by the trooper, the haversack he carried, and the rifle he fired. Color photographs of the very few known uniform items that have survived time--and countless spring cleanings--enhance the descriptions. Intriguing also, is the story of how the uniform and other equipment was obtained through the diligence, political connections, and speedy action by Col. Leonard Wood, the actual commander of the Regiment. (Theodore Roosevelt started as a second in command--by his own recommendation.)

Photographs by 1898 cameramen show how the uniform and equipment was actually worn and carried. They also show how some troopers modified the uniform, either for practical reasons, or simply to express a little individuality. To provide a clear dimension to how the uniforms and equipment were employed, the author has teamed with several men to model the unforms and show how the quipment ws handled. These are not professional models, but men of the West who are familiar with horses, firearms and the rigors of life outdoors. Indeed, the author, who is also a respected Grand Canyon wrangler, and professional saddle maker (and who looks like a young Col. Roosevelt) models a replica of the khaki uniform that the energetic future President had made-to-order.

This is a soft-cover work containing much hard detail, with extensive footnotes in each chapter. There are many more loose ends to the Rough Rider story. The author admits "Cowboys in Uniform" is not his final work on the subject. It is, however, a good first book. Moreover, with several more ISBN numbers registerd to him, we can expect more writing from him on this subject.

Sweet and loving tales of parenting and love!
This book consists of three complete novels, one each from Dorothy Glenn, Joan Hohl, and Dixie Browning all with a connection of making the hero "a Daddy again."

The first, "Sunshine Every Morning" from Dorothy Glenn (also known as Dorothy Garlock) is a sweet love story that begins with heartbreak that quickly turns to a sweet love story. When Gaye loses her baby during birth, she is swept into the life of Jim Trumbull and his newborn grandson from her own sister. Jim drives Gaye crazy, as she quickly falls in love with this big man and his dear grandson.

The second, "Forever Spring" from Joan Hohl is another sweet love story of a millionaire that falls deeply in love with the owner of a small bed and breakfast. The couple quickly develop a dear sweet bond and passionate relationship, however her ex-husband quickly attempts to sabatoge the relationship, even using their two sons to do it.

Finally, "Hazards of the Heart" by author Dixie Browning is a love story of two former high school classmates. Jake Hatcher doesn't even remember Libby, however slowly becomes dependent on her, until he can think of nothing else.

All three stories are sweet and loving, the first story is definitely the best... and the final story, "Hazards of the Heart" really drags on a bit and the author seems to try hard to make Libby undesirable by all means... and Jake Hatcher the perfect catch... got a little tiring - not my favorite by any means.

Dorothy Glenn was very unique and loving. It's a very sweet story, one that shouldn't be missed. If you enjoy this, read Dorothy Glenn's stories under the name Dorothy Garlock. She definitely improved upon changing her pen name, but this is a very good story. I love the unique storyline!

Maggie was dumped by her fiancee two weeks before there wedding, so she has trust issues when it comes ot men. Mitch was dumped by his fiancee after she saw him comforting his assistant, which was purely inncocent, so Mitch has a thing about trust.

Maggie leaves her big city life to get away and find some peace, but when money runs low she decides to get a job. Mitch needs someone to fill in for his assistant while she is on maternity leave. Maggie gets the job.

The heat between Maggie and Mitch is undeniable, but can they each come to terms with there pasts so that they can have a future?

They story is okay. I did not find it real exciting. I wish that the ending had been a bit better. If your looking for a quick read, nothing real gripping or exciting than this book will do.

a maddening read...
I received this book as a gift several years ago, and started into it with some anticipation... the topic seemed most intriguing.

While it is well written, it is a book that will spark emotions on all levels. Much of what the author perceives and shares I do not agree with. She writes with an overly-preachy and arrogant air and maybe she has felt compelled to do so.

This book certainly does not speak for my generation (30somethings) and younger generations. Some of the issues Joan Smith deals with in the book are non-issues for women today.

If this title had been written 25-30 years ago, it would have made waves and been highly praised I'm sure. What it does today, however, is rehash women's issues of the 60s that are no longer relevant in today's society (at least here in the western world).

I didn't care for this dissertation and have only scored it a '3' because it was so incredibly provoking at times I wanted to pitch the book across the room. For that it deserves a halfway decent rating.

Buy the book if you want to be provoked... skip it if you'd rather not beat an already-dead horse.

Regency hero and heroine work for reforms in Ireland
Although the hero and heroine of "A Difficult Truce" exhibit the attributes of a romantic couple - they are aristocrats, physically attractive, charismatic, and in a conflicted relationship - I am reluctant to deem this a romance. The conflict in this book revolves around the struggle to bring the vote for Catholics to 19th C. Britain and land reform to Ireland. A greater part of the work is devoted to Christina's and Dacre's negotiations with the British cabinet and Irish revolutionaries to achieve these related ends. The conflict between the hero and heroine arises, in fact, out of their differing approaches to the problem. As always, Ms. Wolf's style is impeccable, but I had difficulty with her condensation of a struggle that lasted a century into a one or two year span. Readers who are not historical purists may not mind this, but the casual romance reader who picks up this Signet Regency may be surprised at the amount of space devoted to political manuevering.

This is good poetry, but it IS poetry, not romantic fiction, and NOT by the Joan Wolf who writes romantic fiction (No Dark Place, Summer Storm, Difficult Truce, etc). So beware.

little boring but decent fare
This book has been advertised as comic and touching. Well for Liverpool residebts its fine since the language used is too dialectical. The main story is good and absorbing but deliberately and excess camaraderie is shown among the servants the master. It seems artificial at times.

Not bad for a rainy afternoon but tends to drag at times. I had to skip over many pages to keep the interest going....

Drugs in Hispanic, oops! I mean Latino, Communities
This anthology details the origins, extent, and solutions for drug use and trafficking in Latino communities. The chapters focus on various stages of distributing drugs (addiction and selling) and curing the abuse (prevention and counseling). Several Latino subpopulations are emphasized as well (adolescents, women). The contributors have various writing styles. Some of the work was number-crunching, others were historical or merely descriptive. AIDS was a backdrop to the discussion; there was one AIDS-focused chapter and a few chapters ended with the topic. However, the overlap of drug use and prostitution or male-to-male sex in the AIDS spread was not brought up; I found that kinda disappointing. This book was compiled over a decade ago and it may be dated. The use of "Hispanic" rather than "Latino" is an example of this fact. The book differentiates and highlights Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans. Though other Latino groups may feel left out, I applaud this goal to recognize ethnic distinctions within the Latino population. Though there were some Spanish-surnamed authors, I get the sense that this was mostly Anglo writing on the Latino populations. This may feel a bit colonizing to some readers. Still, I am glad there's a book out there that documents the problem and the cure amongst this racial minority group.

Review
Though, not the best book Nixon has ever written, she developed her characters well. This is a trait made apparent with good writers. The plot was not developed as well as the other books in this trilogy. But, overall this was a fairly good book but the other two books in the trilogy were much better.
