The Dog Training Bible
Joan Embery's book is the best book I have read on training a dog. This book covers it all: picking the right dog for you, puppy-proofing your home, early basic training, advanced training, solving behavior problems, grooming, nutrition, traveling tips, preventive health care, and even first aid.

The book is easy to follow even for a beginner. I bought the book when I got my first dog and followed it to the "T". People can not believe how well trained my dog is and ask if I had him professionally trained!

This book is a must have for all dog owners!

The floating world
This is a beautiful book: pictures by the Catalan photographer Jordi Bernado from all over the world, presented in pairs on facing pages. Why each pair? Sometimes it's easy to tell--a common element--pyramids in each one, or ersatz Statues of Liberty; a common theme--tourists, hotels--and sometimes the connections are obscure, but always you have to supply them yourself; there is no text. The photographs are all beautiful, but not in a conventional touristy way; often they're of backroads, or vacant lots, or swimming pools, or parked cars.

The final effect is an intense feeling of lot in Lleida or in Vancouver? is this propped-up derelict building in Japan or in Berlin? (There's a small key at the back that gives the dates and places.) A beautiful meditation on the modern world.

A thoroughly enjoyable bedtime story
Good Night, Animals is a thoroughly enjoyable bedtime story about Bubble and Pearl, two young children who are sleeping in a tent outdoors at night for the first time. But strange noises from outside the tent attract their attention in this remarkable and humorous picture book written by Lena Arro and lovingly illustrated with gentle color artwork by Catarina Kruusval.

Classic Piece of Texana
This is a great, very well organized and researched book.

The theaters described cover Texas and provide a guide to the culture and history of the State.

The photos are majestic, with a haunting quality that makes me want to take my son on a cross-state trip to see the theaters and learn about his Texas heritage.

I wish the book had more detail about the fascinating photos. Some are not dated.

Grandmother's Bell and the Wagon Train 1849
Published in Paperback by Barsotti Books (October, 1996)
Authors: Joan Barton Barsotti and Carol Mathis

A beautiful story for my children's bed time.
At first notice Mathis' illustrations drew me to "Grandmother's Bell and The Wagon Train 1849". The innocent expressions and gay emotions the illustrator conveyed on paper inhanced this quasi-historical children's story about a 19th century American pioneering family. I expected an excellent story and was mildly surprised as the illustrator is obivously an expert in story telling, as is, Joan Barsotti, the author of this grand adventure.

Barsotti's story is as poetic as it is page turning and together the authur & illustrator tell a beautiful tale worthy of promting love and courage in my children's dream adventures.

This book has become a favorite of my children and I look forward to Barsotti's next masterpiece.

Essays and Rememberances
"Grant Wood and Little Sister Nan draws Nan Wood Graham out of the larger tapestry of Wood's life and gives definition to her loyal support of her brother and her own achievements. She was a pathfinder whose contributions extend into areas that cannot be easily measured." writes Mary Bennett, Special Collections Coordinator for the State Historical Society of Iowa.

Julie Jensen McDonald pieces together the spirit of the Wood family during the demanding and daring times of the 1920s and 30s, capturing the substance that nurtured the talent, resourcefulness, and fierce loyalty demonstrated by Nan Wood Graham until her death in 1990 at the age of ninety-one years. Intriguing and enchanting details, garnered from the vast collection of Grant Wood memorabilia now held by the Davenport Art Museum, and other sources, profile the woman behind the face in American Gothic. Nan tells how she was wooed by her brother into posing for the painting by a promise that no one would recognize her. As the Gothic couple became one of the most celebrated images in art history, she speaks candidly of the joy as well as the vulnerability of "celebrity," including the innumerable parodies which depict a wide range of social conditions.

Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret, Penfield Press publisher, presents a pictorial documentary along with a"Passages in Time" of the Wood family, and rare insights from friends, acquaintances and admirers of Nan and her brother Grant Wood.

Essays by friends and close associates reveal the extent of Nan Wood Graham's devotion to the memory of her brother and to the places where they spent their early years. Personal letters and other commentaries provide a view of her fondness for time and place: early years in Anamosa, Iowa, growing up in Cedar Rapids, the generosity of friends in the Amana Colonies in times of great need, and the support of friends and mentors in the Iowa City and Davenport areas. Nan was often cast as a "fierce guardian of the truths of her brother's life." The Epilogue "Myths About Grant Wood," based on several years of research with Nan and other sources by the late John Zug, presents some truths to dispel many of the myths that often accompany notoriety.

This book adds a dimension to the woman in American Gothic. At age eighty three, Nan said the painting saved her life from being drab. Even though she didn't think the "painted" lady looked anything like her when it was first displayed, she had now decided that: "We look a lot alike. She's really become me."
