valuable for teachers with or without technology
I have recently discovered a book entitledThe integrated technology classroom: Building self-reliant learners, by Joan Riedl, published by Allyn & Bacon in 1995. You may already be familiar with it. I discovered it searching for a textbook to use with an educational technology class. It presents a structure for integrating technology into a classroom that is designed to promote active learning. It also provides a way to think about the activities students do, with or without technology. Riedl begins with the skills and competencies identified by the U.S. Department of Labor as necessary for success in the workplace. These include: knowledge of how to allocate resources; ability to work well in teams; ability to acquire and evaluate data; understanding of systems and the ability to use technology appropriately and effectively. Moreover all workers need basic skills (reading, writing, mathematics, speaking and listening), thinking skills (reasoning, decision making, problem solving and creative thinking) and personal qualities (responsibility, self-esteem, sociability and integrity). She then identifies three steps in the learning process: building a knowledge base; practicing skills and putting it all together (pages 14-15). She then applies all this to the design of learning stations in a classroom, and this is where it gets really interesting for me. Riedl provides a systematic way to think about each activity, so as to be clear about what students are doing and what can be accomplished at each learning station. When you design an activity at a learning station, try this process. Begin by specifying what step in the learning process is occurring at the learning station. For instance, CD-ROM research on computer is about building a knowledge base. Drill-and-practice math software is about practicing skills. Publishing a piece of writing, including spell-checking, grammar-checking and illustrating, is about putting it all together. Know where in the learning process your activity is situated. If the activity is about putting it all together, ask yourself whether students have the knowledge base to complete the activity. If the activity is about acquiring a knowledge base, ask yourself what students will be expected to do with that knowledge base. You can also identify the skills involved in each of these activities - basic skills, thinking skills and personal qualities. You can design activities to demand the work skills you want students to acquire. Perhaps your students seem to need practice in critical thinking or decision making. The assignment at the learning station should be designed to engage them in that practice. Riedl goes one step further in her description of learning stations. She names six different learning stations, each distinguished by a specific learning tool or primary function. These include: a broadcast news station, to build communications skills; a "how's it going" station in which students typically work with a teacher; a computer station; a multimedia station; an experiential station and a multipurpose station. The content may vary, but the structure does not. The value of the book, it seems to me, is in its systematic approach to the design of a classroom environment. For us, in one-computer classrooms, it demonstrates how to be clear about where in the learning process a computer activity is situated, and what skills we intend our students to practice. This clarity will help us and our students find our way through the variety of activities presented on- and off-computer.

What to say?
This is not actually a review, but I was a student of hers while she was writing this book. Ever since those years, I have always looked up to her as one of the greatest role-models in my life. She was an excellent teacher, and I am sure that you will enjoy this book if you do buy it.

A very good way to introduce IPA to young singers
I absolutely love this book. It is by far the best publication I have found to teach young singers the basics of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). I found it very easy to understand and their are excellent charts for easy references. Although there are a few ocassional exceptions to rules that could be more easily explained, the basics are taught well. It receives my highest recommendation as a vocal instructor.

A Very Helpful Book for Singers!
This book provides the reader/singer with exersises that will help them with diction, communication, pronounciation, and other techniques needed to be an expert singer. If you want to learn the "rules" of singing correctly--here's a good way to start!

It is the most understandable statistics book for beginners
I have been using this book in my statistics classes since 1990. It is so easy to understand for undergraduate students. Authors give really good examples to explain some complex subjects of statistics. These examples make the book more readable..

BEAUTIFUL & RELAXING
On side 1 of this cassette Dr Borysenko relates her spiritual awakening and examines the concept of angels in the mystical traditions of Judaism, Zoroastrianism and Christianity, as well as phenomenological evidence. She also discusses the near-death experience. The side is concluded with a discussion of the 4 archangels and their qualities: Uriel (Light of God), Michael (Likeness of God), Rafael (Healer of God) and Gabriel (Strength of God). On side 2 is a guided meditation where the listener is first relaxed, a prayer is offered and the 4 archangels are then invoked in turn. The harp and choir create a beautiful musical ambience. Repeated listening to this side of the tape brings about a refreshing feeling of serenity and rejuvenation. The more psychically aware one is, the stronger will be the feeling of angelic presences around you.

This Tape Healed My Sister's Chronic Leg Pain
My sister was visiting me, and I gave her my personal stereo and headphones, and the healing meditation on side 2 to listen to. When she was 15 she had a leg injury from a motorcycle accident. At 50 years old the leg pain still bothered her. The tape caused the pain's energy to exit through her foot -that was 2 years ago- and she has been pain free ever since. Now she tells everyone about it. I hope Joan sees this as I've wanted her to know. THANKS SO MUCH Joan!!!!

Insightful!
This extremely practical, highly focused book goes through the hands-on details of preparing a presentation or speech. Some of the instructions seem self-evident, but only because author Joan Detz is extremely thorough and recognizes that it is easy to forget these "obvious" tips under pressure. She provides a vast amount of practical information, far more than anyone could absorb at once, but her tips are worth reading again and again. She also includes good self-assessment forms and questionnaires. Many of these venerable public-speaking concepts date back to the Sermon on the Mount, but Detz adds her own spin by emphasizing that the focus should be on the speaker, not on slides or props (downplay the loaves and fishes). The book's power resides in its completeness; Detz seems to have thought of everything, and that is reassuring. We [...] recommend this book to anyone who must make presentations in public, under any circumstances.

It's Not What You Say, It's How You Say It
Extremely easy to read. Every point is supported by real life examples or funny bloopers. Because of its simplicity, it sticks and you are more likely to apply it to your next presentation, speech, delivering a status to the boss. It is worth having in the bookshelf as a business reference or for personal situations.

A passion for jewelry design
Joan Rivers is one of America's most successful comedians (a tough field for a woman, as being funny and being ladylike would seem to be mutually exclusive.) Ms. Rivers has always been a fan of high fashion. Her late husband Edgar indulged her love of designer jewelry such as Faberge's, but not content to merely own such works of art, Rivers started her own costume jewelry line inspired by Russian pieces, Edwardian, Victorian and modern classics.

The book contains a section on the major designers like Faberge and Cartier, a section on the reproductions in the Rivers line compared to their original versions, and one about the process by which costume jewelry is made, from artist's model to casting pot metal, electroplating and setting rhinestones. The book is well-photographed and should be of interest to anyone who collects costume jewelry, whether from Rivers' own line or vintage pieces of other makes.

Joan Rivers Jewelry fans will love this book! :)
Joan's book has lots of beautiful photos of her classics collection jewelry from the first 5 years. Her book explains how she got started with QVC & why she decided to create the jewelry, how the jewelry is made, where she got her inspiration for her classics collection jewelry, personal stories & information about her favorite jewelry designers & stores. It's a fun book that is a very easy read with lots of beautiful photos. If you collect Joan's jewelry like I do you'll love seeing all the different pieces of jewelry she did in the early years. It's great to see jewelry pieces I have & other items from that year's collection. This book was well worth the price!

Joan Miro Selected Writings and Interviews

Corrosponding Realities
This selection of Miro's writing provides an interesting view into the intentions, beliefs, and personality of a very engaging and seminal Catalan artist. The book covers the great majority of his life and thoughts, dealing with his early fondness for Dada, his relationship with painters such as Masson, his exilic time in France, plus musings on Catalan nationalism, the surrealist movement, and poetry.

For those die-hard Paul Auster fans (Auster translates the french writings in this text), this book is a worthy read and insight into an artist who Auster devotes time to translating, and in doing so illuminates sympathies between the two: a nostolgic and essentialist notion of art as process that somehow remains endearing in the contemporary world, and somehow demands the respect and admiration that such force and sincerity manifests.

A fascinating read, both as a historical document, and an artistic biography: it provides an interesting glance into one of the most influencial modern painters of Europe whose life was centered in the intellectual and historical complexities of late modernism.

Miro in his Own Voice
For those who only know Miro as a painter of "abstract" or "childlike" pictures, Joan Miro : Selected Writings and Interviews reveals the true radicalism of his thought, a radicalism which, in the realm of visual art, equals that of Lenin in politics. Unlike other works, which ignore his theories about, for example, the "murder of painting," or acknowledge them only to distort their true meaning, here, "the most surrealist of us all" speaks in his own voice, enabling one to track the evolution of his thought from schoolyard days, through the frustration of his time in the army, to the development of ideas about the pen and brush which challenged the very world as it exists. The man who challenged his father by declaring the sky was purple was an intractable enemy of consensus reality. Yet in his ruthless charge towards the future, he did not cease from being a maker of pictures existing in all time and even outside of time. This work's precious insight provides little comfort for those who, as a defense mechanism or out of studied denial, belittle Miro's connection to surrealism, or the importance of his revolutionary role.

A Story of Bravery
This book was about the brave life of a french peasant Joan d'(of) Arc. The story explains how the voices of god (angels and saints) told her that she was the one who needed to save France. Knowing that the king of France would not take a women seriously much less a peasant Joan cleverly disguised herself as a male and goes to confront the king. Impressed with Joan he gave her an army and a horse and told her to defend her country against England. Joan bravely led her troops in the name of god and his messenger. Soon after her charge on the English Joan was captured and put on trial for her charades and was sentenced to death by burning on the stakes. No one took this women seriously, much less believe that she had been chosen by god to fight for his message. After her death Joan was deemed a saint and forever known as the brave Saint Joan d' Arc.
I like the authors way of simply telling the story. The pictures in the book vividly displayed emotion and showed the trial wonderfully. Depicting the judges anger, the juries humor and Joan's undying passion and courage. The author shared with the readers the courage Joan had. Inviting the readers to fight for what they believe in and never give up on their values no matter what. A wonderful story of bravery and courage.

Illustrations that beautifully bring the story home!
I was impressed with the look of this book as much as with the content. Both the author and the illustrator have created a lovely retelling of the story of Joan! And when my, then 6 year old, daughter brought it home from her school library, I could see her spark of interest in St. Joan coming to life. One year later, she brought up the notion of finding this book again. She hadn't seen it since the one time she had checked it out at school, last year. That is what convinced me to purchase it for our home library. It trully is a book you'll want to read and look at over and over!

John Fitzgerald Kennedy...As We Remember Him
1st edition. A Columbia Records Legacy Collection Book. Atheneum New York 1965. Dust jacket is a little frayed, the book is in execellent condition. Remembered by Mrs. Rose Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy Shriver...This book is a treasure.

A Marvelous Book of Photographs about JFK...
Of all the American Presidents, John F. Kennedy was surely among the most glamorous and photogenic. During his brief but dramatic political career dozens of the nation's best photographers were paid to capture him, his beautiful young wife, his children, and his remarkable brothers and sisters on film. The result has been dozens of "coffee-table" photo books on the Kennedys. However, this older book, published in the sixties not long after JFK's assassination, is among the best that I have seen. Unlike many Kennedy books, which focus mainly on Kennedy's Presidency and/or political career, "As We Remember Him" is much more balanced, and follows JFK from his childhood, through prep school, college and World War Two. The photos are lovely and very well-done, and the book also has two more advantages: the photos are accompanied by quotes from Kennedy friends, relatives, and associates from childhood forward; and the book contains several reprinted newspaper articles concerning JFK, from his heroism in World War Two to obituaries of his beloved older brother and sister; and letters from Senator and President Kennedy to friends and the public. The result is a very balanced and interesting look at Kennedy the man - father, husband, politician, and President. Highly Recommended!
