Another Hawk's Way story. This is not the best one in the series, but it is still good. Faron Whitelaw finds out the truth about his parents, he was the result of an affair that his mother had. If you read the other books than you will understand how close the Whitelaws are, and how much it hurt Faron to realize his father was someone else. Faron found out who he was when his birth father died and left Faron half of his estate. The other half belongs to Faron's stepmother. Only Faron's idea of a stepmother is not what he gets when he meets Belinda. She is young and beautiful. He figured Belinda for a gold digging princess, but for him to know the truth means that he will have to know the type of man that his birth father was. Belinda and Faron find themselves drawn to each other. They also have a little help from Farons "new" grandmother. There is a lot going on in this story, but it is a quick and easy read. Another Whitelaw is always worth reading about.

In this Hawk's Way book the Whitelaws branch out. This is the story of Faron Whitelaw's step brother Carter. We were introduced to Carter in 'The Wrangler and the Rich Girl' when he was interested in purchasing his fathers estate. This story picks up on the exact night that he came to town. Desiree was also first intorduced in the previous book when she came to Faron and Belindas party, she was the young woman that had a scar on her face.

Desiree asks Carter to be her husband and in return she will sign over half of her estate. Carter is looking for somewhere to put down roots and since he can not have his fathers estate he thinks Desiree's offer sounds good. Desiree and Carter get married a week later. Carter does not consider that he will now have to be a father to Desiree's daughter Nicky. Carter has a hard time with the little girl because of his own secret past. Carter also wants to see if Desiree can love him for who he is and does not tell her that he is rich. Desiree also has secrets of her own. She has not told Carter about the abusive ex husband that gave her the scars on her face and body, or that he is getting out of prison and that is why she wanted to get married. Desiree figures that her ex will leave her alone if Carter is there, but she turns out to be really wrong. Despite there pasts they have to try to decide if they want to open there hearts to each other. They also have to deal with all of the secrets between them. This is a great edition to the Hawk's Way series.

Required Reading for Anyone in the Mental Health Field
I read this book shortly after being transferred from my job at a state psychiatric hospital, that was being "downsized", to a state prison psychiatric service where I found myself working with the same men with whom I had worked at the aforementioned hospital. Not the same kinds of men .... the same, exact men. Everything in this book rings true. Anyone working in mental health systems everywhere needs to read it. In the nine years since it was published, the plight of mentally ill people on the streets and in the prisons has only gotten worse. I wish that Dr. Torrey and NAMI would update this book and make it more widely available.

Out standing
This book by Joan Randell is inspiring. I am knowledgable about gem stones, event though this is not necessary to enjoy this book. It provides a clear and inspiring understanding of how the Lord Jesuus Christ is reflected in gem stones in our everyday lives. I beleive its a glimpse into what the Kingdom of God or heaven, will be like. I imagine God wants to give us gifts, like gem stones, far above or beyond what we could think or imagine here on earth. If we think gem stones are great, God has even greater things in store for us. This book inspires one to think this way. Joan's book helped me at a critical juncture in my life when I was trying to decide whether or not to pursue the jewelry industry as a career. I can honestly say it provided answers and guided my thinking as I made the step into the world of gem stones. God is represented in all fascets of nature including the beauty of gems. Joan's book brings out the richness of this fact and makes one realize how great is the God to whom we pray.

Exposes how cults operate and recruit
A great study of the psychodynamics and recruiting techniques of cults, includes treatments of Berg's Children of God and the Jonestown fiasco. A must for anyone seeking to understand what makes cults so attractive and why their appeal is so insidiously effective in cultures of relative isolation and deracination like this one.

Cutting Edge: Art-Horror and the Horrific Avant-garde
Published in Library Binding by Univ of Minnesota Pr (Trd) (08 May, 2000)
Author: Joan Hawkins
Amazon base price: $54.95
Average review score:

Avante-gardism vs Exploitation - Is there a difference?
Cutting Edge investigates the differences/relationships between avant-garde cinema and exploitation (what she terms as 'paracinema') - how viewers of both types tend to divorce themselves from mainstream cinema. The difference between the two types of cinema is that though both tend to use shocking material to explore certain themes whilst attempting to jolt the viewer out of complacency, 'paracinema' maintains a more ironical distance. The films used to illustrate this hypothesis are interesting choices. George Franju's LES YEUX SANS VISAGE/ EYES WITHOUT A FACE is used in a lengthy chapter as an example of a horror film that has transcended its origins to become a respected art house film. An equal amount of space is given to Jess Franco's GRITOS EN LA NOCHE and FACELESS, both as examples of the how Franco approaches the material in a different way. Other examples explored in depth are ANDY WARHOL'S FRANKENSTEIN, an exploitation film whose genesis was in the avant-garde scene, and Tod Browning's FREAKS, a horror which has once again been appropriated by the avant-garde. But most fascinating for me however was a detailed description of Yoko Ono's RAPE. It was meant to be an allegory of the media's "rape" of Lennon, McCartney and the rest of the Beatles and their wives/families, though it raises some interesting points about the nature of spectator/victim in the role of cinema, a la PEEPING TOM. Is this "art" or "exploitation". Undeniably it's the latter, BUT the film was never released commerically into cinemas, just a few specialist screenings for an "art" market. The author contrasts this film with SNUFF, a fake film which masquerades itself as reality.

Well worth a read, this book. Very thought-provoking stuff indeed.
