Fantastic!
This book is a must have for educators of grades 1-3. It contains 70 experiments to do with children and my classes have been excited and interested in learning about each one that we've done together. Each experiment follows the scientific method and usually can be conducted with items that are readily available. You'll find that each experiment has teacher instructions, explanations, student method sheets, and student predictors to use to graph their hypothesis. This book is lacking in background information, but I've been able to use other materials to supplement the lessons. I also recommend this book for science fair projects.

My grandkids love this book
I was glad to find this book because I haven't seen anything else like it. It's the kind of book that gets kids to read--even those who don't really like reading. I'm a retired school librarian and am giving this as a gift to my granddaughter along with an inexpensive metal detector. One of my grandsons had a treasure hunt birthday party and gave this book to each of the kids that came as a party favor, along with gold-wrapped chocolate coins, and a treasure map he drew and photocopied. It was a lot of fun!

Kid tested, kid approved!
I love Joan Irvine's books. I am an art teacher and I use it in my classroom from middle school on up! The kids like it and find the instructions easy to follow. Everyone can be successful and creative. They find they don't think they know how to do it until they've tried. Joan gets them started and then the kids take off from there!

More advanced pop-up card ideas-still easy to do
This is the second book on the same subject. This one teaches you more ideas for pop-up cards. Also shows you how you can make GIANT pop-ups that can be used for playing in and around-sort of a scene for kids to build around. Again written for children but a good book for beginners in making pop-ups.

How to Write and Give a Speech
The Washington Post praised this as a "how-to classic" and I would agree with them. It's well-organized and filled with top-quality professional advice. It's also very 'readable' - which sets it apart from so many public speaking texts.

I found this book saved me a lot of time and worry, both in preparing formal speeches and informal presentations. Most important, it will make you a much better, and more confident, speaker.

Real People, Real Stories of Faith, Hope, and Courage
Regular folk truly have some stories worth telling, especially when their tales concern spirituality. Miracles, near-death experiences, hardships overcome--these are the events one expects to find recounted in a collection of anecdotes about faith, hope, and courage. They're all there in How We Got Over: Testimonies of Faith, Hope, and Courage. And then some. In over sixty stories, editors Trevy A. McDonald and Bettye J. Allen bring together a rich collection of distinct voices, all centered on telling how trust in God made a difference in the believers' lives.

These testimonies have a rare quality. They resonate with an aural timbre and evoke vivid imagery like stories more typically heard in the oral tradition. Thankfully the editors captured these artifacts in text form. Despite occasional brevity, each tale has the power and grace of a well delivered sermon, and many pack the unmistakable force of truth that comes from recognizing situations we ourselves would never want to endure, though we may take comfort in knowing that someone else lived through the circumstance, relying on unfailing faith in God to bring them through. Thus, the true strength of these testimonies lies in the life lessons they teach.

As expected, most of the stories are told from a first-person point of view, some with bylines, some without. A few are narrated in third person. All contributors have a bio blurb appearing at the end of the book. From the stories and bio information, we see a cross-section of people represented, both men and women from all across the nation in various age groups. Although quite a number of the contributors avow affiliation with the AME (African Methodist Episcopal) denomination (particularly some of the preacher wives), other faiths are represented, too. Indeed, another beauty of the book is how it weaves together a tapestry of themes across geographic region, class, denominational difference, gender, and age.

One person tells of deliverance from spousal abuse, then another picks up with a tale about a couple's lean years spent together, uprooted from place to place by education and job necessity, until one day they finally land in a stable situation where they raise a family and enjoy a prosperous life. Flood waters in the South almost do away with one young man, while a woman in the Midwest gets tossed around by a tornado yet lives to tell about it. An AIDS victim bravely deals with that scary situation, offering astonishingly warm words to those still ignorant or in denial about the disease, encouraging them to learn the facts and overcome their fear. (Proceeds from the book, by the way, support AIDS orphans.) The range of tales these regular folk tell no doubt includes something everyone can relate to.

Told in eloquent, engaging prose, with a Bible verse introducing each story, How We Got Over belongs right alongside a daily devotional and Scripture for inspirational reading. In fact, beyond its inspirational genre, the book also functions as a study in American culture, social psychology, folk tradition, and journalism. It reminds that ongoing faith, hope, and courage can indeed work miracles.

My soul is lifted by Ms Peternel's poetry
Why do I get the feeling that Ms. Peternel has so much to saythat the words fall easily from her pen? I am in awe of her use oflanguage which forces me to conjure up new images each time I reread pages from Howl and Hosanna. Her thoughts range from the passing of time on a typical Sunday in "One Sunday, One Summer" to her phrase in "Mystical Conjunction"--Love is for hearts and poetry for souls. My soul is lifted by her words.

Humphrey the Odd-Looking Camel

The book is excellent and a wonder for children to read!
After reading Humphrey, the Odd-Looking Camel I thought it was an awesome way to teach young children about self-esteem. Humphrey is a lovable character that I believe many children could fall in love with. I especially liked the keen way the author stretched the imagination of readers by using symbols to understand that who they are on the inside is much more important than who they are on the outside. I was very impressed in the author's creativity, particularly, the unique use of a camel to teach children about self-esteem. The character of Humphrey I hope will become very popular to children. The character of the author is obviously a great one in that she wants to help young people grow up to be strong people. I wish the author continued greatness with her creativity and her well-developed book character, Humphrey, the Odd-Looking Camel.
