A Rare Find: Quality Criticism
I bought this book months ago and am still working my way through it, which is a good thing, because Joan Copjec has packed every single essay with the most acute insight that I feel my brain growing every time I read it. This book isn't, as it is promoted, a dialogue between historicism and psychoanalysis in which psychoanalysis wins. Rather, Copjec examines how historicists misuse or misinterpret Lacan in their theories, which she seeks to right my proposing different readings of Lacan. If this review makes no sense it's because I can't possibly wrap my brain around everything that Copjec says. Needless to say, if you have an interest in theory, read this book. The first essay on film theory is fascinating, and the emphasis on the failure of language to signify and how this failure is marked in language provides an exciting platform on which to rethink the social subject. I can't wait to read GIVING GROUND.

Critical theory at its sharpest
This book is a remarkable achievement. With admirable lucidity and precision, Copjec succeeds in demolishing many naive and inaccurate claims about desire and history. Anyone wishing to know why Michel Foucault and Judith Butler have impoverished debates about sexuality should read this original book. The final chapter is a truly devastating critique of Butler's *Gender Trouble*, making one wonder why that book had any influence at all.

The Rebellious Ward

A Lovely story.
You can always trust Joan Wolf to give you a good story. The usual guardian-ward romance but written with such consummate skill , it turns out to be so beautiful, touching and heart-warming. I just love it.

Hard to imagine a plot like this can be done a better way...
The prologue alone is worth the money. The suspense is so cleverly done that merely peeking at the last page wouldn't give the answer. I was caught and "fooled" until the very last moment. And the way everything gets wrapped up is really satisfactory.

Reflexology For Everybody By Joan Cosway-Hayes
Cosway-Hayes has prepared a fully illustrated step-by-step guide to reflexology. It's totally fool-proof with a comprehensive index and links between what ails you and how reflexology can cure you. More importantly, her book dispenses information about a more healthy and stress-free lifestyle. She is serious that her book really is everybody, even those of us, who are rushed to find time to apply it. Why you can even use some of the techniques while you're talking on the telephone. Here's an irresistable book that sells itself over and over again. Enjoy.

A Truely Excellent Resource
As an avid reader and Reflexologist I am always on the hunt for well written and accurate reflexology books. In "Reflexology for Every Body," by Joan Cosway-Hayes, I have found a truely excellent resource and instructional tool.

This book is appropriate for both the professional reflexologist and those who want to learn the basics for use at home.

Joan's book covers all aspects of this ancient healing art in a comprehensive and easy to read format. The book is also designed so that it can be used as a quick reference for specific conditions and corresponding reflexes.

The section of information on other complimentary practices and treatments is an added bonus. I highly recommned this book for anyone who is interested in learning the powerful tool of reflexology.

a lovely and soothing collection of lullabyes, pure joy
This serene collection of sleepytime melodies is a sure winner for both parent and child. Nina Mattikow's lovely soprano voice soothes and relaxes, with a blend of popular and lesser-known (but equally enjoyable) tunes. The Classical Lullabyes tape is pure bliss, artistically accompanied with ocean waves, rhythmic breezes, and other sounds of nature's own symphony. The collection is a must for any nursery, and a welcome addition to your own bedside table as well!

Why it is good for our youth today.
This is an amazing piece of work. You have the childhood memories for the adults to pass on to their loving children. When I have children, I want to make sure that I can give them all the good things in life that I had, with out having them worry about the bad things. This book gives the masterpiece classic songs for healing a child with bad thoughts. It is even good for the adults to have, so they can look back on what helped them spend time with thier parents or helped them fall asleep. It is great for one and all to enjoy and share with others througout the years.

Old Wounds and New Visions
In this most personal of her many books, Joan Chittister uses the story of Jacob wrestling with God as a metaphor for the seemingly insurmountable struggles and disappointments that occur in every lifetime. Writing with passion and compassion, she shows how it is precisely in confronting our personal limitations and the limitations imposed on us, that we strengthen our spiritual muscles and learn to accept help from others. From struggle is born new life and conversion, as we open our hearts and minds to new possibilities. Only the experience of our own vulnerability will prepare us to understand others in their brokenness. Facing despair, we discover the depth of our faith, and dealing with depression, we learn the quality of our hope. Hope need not be heroic: it may be just putting one foot ahead of the other when we find no reason to do so. This is a practical, positive, and challenging book to be read slowly and pondered prayerfully.

A Very Human Dilemma
Joan Chittister has a wonderful way with words! No wonder when the offer of her getting an advanced degree in creative writing was withdrawn at the last moment, she struggled with deep disappointment, anger and fear. But she remained faithful to the vows of obedience that she had taken as a Benedictine nun and the great transformation of her life began. As she wrestled with her negative feelings, eventually she was able to see how she could use her writing skills in other ways. And the great gift to us all is her ability to help us along our own life's journey with its deep disappointments, losses and turns taken that we hadn't planned on. She illustrates in this wonderful book how all of us get scarred by life's struggles. That is a comfort when you believe you are alone in this. Then she goes on to show how, out of those very struggles, we are able to grow and mature, sometimes even living something undreamed of that goes well beyond what we had originally hoped for. I love this book and have recommended it to friends and family. I read it in two days, not being able to put it down. A friend has told me he has done the same. The book jacket states: "Neither a self-help manual nor a book offering pat answers, but supremely practical and relevant...(it)will richly reward those readers seeking solace in the empathetic, wise, and accessible meditations of a fellow struggler." Amen to that!

A must read if you're raising a grandchild!
This book is personal, practical and well worth reading. As co-authors of Grandloving, we hear from a lot of grandparents, and one wrote to tell us that she had highlighted so many parts of First Time Around that she should have dipped the whole thing in yellow paint!

A timely how-to book for raising kids
In view of this week's school tragedy in Colorado, this book offers practical and timely first-hand advice for grandparents, parents, teachers and other adults committed to raising responsible, caring human beings. Joan Callander puts her heart and her own painful experiences out there for those who want to learn more about the care and feeding of our most precious resource. Most poignant are her personal letters to her grandson, Zach, originally written never to be seen by others, but to help her see beyond the pain of the moment and stay whole. Zach is one lucky kid to have an extended family to love and support him and to have a grandma like Joan. Read it even if you don't have kids!

Availability of Secrets of the Nest
Hello, this is not a review, but I don't see a place to simply email you with information regarding this book. I am the author/illustrator. The book has been distributed for the past two years by Chelsea Green Publishing of White River, Vermont. This is the same publisher who offers From the Redwood Forest. If you have trouble obtaining the Secrets of the Nest from them, please let me know. Secrets of the Nest continues to be a steady seller, and I think you will find it worth while to carry.
Thank you, Joan Dunning

Not for bird enthusiasts only; this is a delightful book
A beautifully written, sensitive and insightful book which makes birds feel like intimate neighbors and friends. I have not sat around wondering what it would be like to be a bird, but entering that realm has been an extraordinary adventure. We began reading this book as part of a home-schooling science project. We expected to learn something, but had no idea how much fun it would be. My 12 year old son is enthralled and so am I. Even though birds had previously not been a particular interest of ours, we are now contemplating a backpacking trip in hopes of personally discovering some of the Secrets of the Nest.

Sex! The Thinking Person's Moral Guide

Amazon base price: $22.95

It opened my eyes.
This book should be available to everyone who has thought about or is in (or out) of a sexual situation. The hidden (moral) images out parents, preachers, teachers and other mentors left us with can be devastating if not put into proper perspective.
Finally, here is a book that explores those ancient myths about Adam & Eve and lets us pick and choose the right way to have a moral, yet sensuous, sexually fulfilling life with the person(s) of our choice.
I gave a copy to my grown daughter and apologized for not teaching her these things years ago. Wish I had read it as teenager.

I wish I had read this book years ago.
This book opened my eyes to a whole range of different ways of looking at sex. I saw things much more clearly than ever. It made me wish I had read it many years (and many relationships) ago. In fact, I am ordering a copy for my daughter.
You will be reassured that you are not weird, or perverted, when you imagine what it would be like to try something new and exciting. The author covers just about everything imaginable in a persons sexual desires.
It also gives you a view of how organized religion may have shamed you into suppressing your desires, made you feel guilty, and how you can overcome those doubts and perform to your highest ability.
Share this book with someone you love (or at least desire) and see what a difference it will make.
