my all time favourite book!
It is the second time I have had the pleasure of reading this novel and weeks later I am still thinking and talking about it. Alfred the Great...what a man! I was so enthralled by the life and times of this English King, his insight, morality and courage, an inspiration thanks to Joan Wolf. Alfred was not expecting to become king of Wessex, one of the four kingdoms in England, with five older brothers. Different to his brothers, Alfred was well educated, sensative and very pragmatic. When the threat of a Danish invasion caught England on the back foot, Alfred united his kingdom and led the only kingdom to withstand the Danes. Entwined with passion, love and heartwrenching suspense, the reader is captured by the characters and their lifestyles. This novel enables the reader to experience the thoughts and issues of the time and gives insight to the only king of England to be called "Great". Do yourself a favour and read to your heart's content, you won't regret it.

My all time favourite book
Albert The Great..what a man. I have read this novel twice and what a thrill. Albert, the youngest of five princes in line for the throne of Wessex, different from his brothers, being well educated and sensative yet strong and forthright never expected to be king. The tale unfolds as this young, extraordinary man finds himself the leader of a realm threatened by the devastating onslaught of Danish Vikings invading England. These torrid times of the mid to late 9th century are softened by the passionate, accidental union of Albert and Elswyth. Being both down to earth and haughty, Elswyth captivates the reader by her eternal strength and aggressive personality which compliments Albert's thoughtful and assertive nature. Together, they hold the West Saxons together in a totally captivating and heartwrenching read. I was so absorbed in the lives of the charachters and the trials they faced, but Albert, King of Wessex is the most enthralling charachter I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

The Emergence of Japanese Kingship
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (November, 1997)
Authors: Joan R. Piggott and Joan R. Piggot
Amazon base price: $60.00
Average review score:

Excellent work on earliest royal history
Joan Piggots' scholarship is excellent. Pulling from a wide array of sources, covering everything from shipping tags attached to merchandise delivered in payment of tribute to the quasi-legendary early chronicles, to written works of law, literature, and religion, archaelogical artefacts and tomb burials, as well as previous works of historical scholarship, she presents an exhaustive and authoritative analysis of a frequently overlooked period in Japanese history, the 3rd through 8th centuries.

Piggott's work focuses on the emergence of the nascent Japanese nation-state, from its indigenous roots with a tennou ('sovereign' ) who was a chief among clans to its period of heavy Chinese borrowing and transformation into a 'modern' (for the era) nation headed up by a Chinese-style Emperor. Adopting a metaphor of archaeological trenches, she describes and analyzes seven major periods of development, discusses the various problems associated with research in that particular period, the known information, and conflicting points of view, while cogently and persuasively arguing her own viewpoint.

Her historical scholarship is impeccable and her writing style is clear and readable -- a great boon to anyone who has wrestled with some of the more obscure writings on the same topic. In short, she makes a significant addition to body of knowledge in the English language regarding a little known era of Japanese history.

Excellent
It is rare to find a work that is both good history and well written; Piggot's examination of the emergence of kingship in a country where 'the gods have not yet died' is an important expansion of our understanding of archaic Japan in particular and sacral kingship in general.

4 1/2* Excellent Picture Book/Fact Book
This is a wonderful fact-filled book that will appeal to toddlers and their older siblings as well. There are surprising facts: The father's instinct to balance an egg on his feet away from the snow is so strong, that "one emperor who doesn't have an egg shuffles around with a chunk of ice about the size of a softball." It's nice that both mother and father penguins get their due as hard-working parents. The mother must travel "waddle, waddle" ninety miles to the open sea (at less than one mile an hour) to get food after the egg is hatched. If lucky, she may find a "field of slick ice, and toboggan on her white belly to speed up the four-day trip. Swoosh! Swoosh!" (The author has a lot of fun with verbs!). The father stays with the egg for over two months in temperatures as low as -60 degrees F., and loses half of his body weight.

Some passages are longer and more complex than others, although in some way this widens the book's appeal. The pictures are boldly colorful and uncluttered (made from hand painted paper shaped formed into collages), my only complaint is that some there are too many pages of static penguins. True, this is the frozen North, but in other sections of the book there is more detail and action. Replete with interesting penguin facts and bright, friendly pictures, this is an excellent combination picture book/fact book.

Nature at Its Most Fascinating.....
"In late May, as an icy winter wind blows across Antarctica, a mother emperor penguin lays an egg. Plop! To keep the egg from freezing, she catches it on her feet and covers it with a flap of skin..." So begins Brenda Guiberson's fascinating and engaging story of life and survival in the coldest place on Earth. Mother and Father penguin take turns eating, traveling on a harrowing journey ninety miles or more to an opening in the Arctic ice to feed. Their mate is left behind, standing still for months to care for the egg and eventually the fluffy little chick, in the worst of winter. Finally as the short summer begins, the baby chick leaves his parents' feet, grows black and white waterproof feathers, and learns to swim and feed on its own. Soon the winter will come, the ocean will freeze, and the emperor penguins will return to their mating grounds to begin the process again..... Ms Guiberson's easy to read and well researched text is chock full of detail, interesting facts, drama, and even appropriate sound effects, and is enhanced by Joan Paley's captivating artwork. Together word and art paint a marvelous and intriguing portrait of the life cycle of the emperor penguin. Perfect for youngsters 5 and older, The Emperor Lays An Egg is non-fiction at its very best, and a treasure of a book that definitely shouldn't be missed.

Packed with Knowledge!
Newscasts are filled with reports of democracy's relentless spread across the planet, but less is heard of its expansion through the corporate world. Just as dictators and oligarchs everywhere are being toppled from power, the hierarchical management structures that have governed organizations since before the industrial revolution are falling. Their usurper is self-management - the concept that motivated employees empowered to make their own decisions will work harder, faster and smarter than their rigidly controlled counterparts. Kenneth Cloke and Joan Goldsmith document this organizational coup and instruct executives on how to incite the revolution in their own companies. While acknowledging the scarcity of hard data to prove some of the book's assertions, we from getAbstract highly recommend The End of Management to all executives for its innovative take on modern organizational theory.

Management is dead . . . Long live management
This is the best book on the changing face of management that I've read in 10 years. As part of the new Warren Bennis Management series, it provides the framework for the new Organizational Democracy and how it can (and should!) replace the outdated, ineffective heirarchical forms of management most common today. If you manage or lead a team, department or organization and desire to manage less and produce more, this is the book for you. I felt the same excitement in reading this book as I did when I read Drucker's classic many years ago.

The chapter entitled "A Brief History of Management" is worth the price of the book -- and its just 10 pages. In the rest of the book you will be given step-by-step guidance for implementing a new way of managing. Among the many practical applications of this book, you will learn:

How to shape Values
How to create Webs of Association
How to develop Self-managing Teams
How to implement Effective Process
and How to produce Self-correcting Systems.

Management (Drucker) is dead, long live management (Cloke).

Extremely honest
Joan Rivers did a fabulous job with this. She was extremely honest in her descriptions with show business and describes the "business" of it so openly. Her vulnerability and strength are intertwined so vividly. She is funny,honest,intelligent,good-hearted and insecure as most, but brave enough to admit it. I would highly recommend the audiotape and book as well. It is a great tool for anyone dealing with the emotional aspects of show business rejections. Joan Rivers proves that not only has she been a survivor thru tremendous hardships, but that she is indeed a fragile, yet strong human being. The audio makes for great listening for days stuck in traffic jams.

Joan Rivers-What a book!
Joan Rivers book-"Enter talking" was a really good book and introduced em to details about her life as a child and her personally.. It felt like i was sitting there-listening to Joan talk/. I think this is a really good book and i think many people would enjoy it.

Eyes of Horus

Author: Joan M. Grant

Better Than a Vivid Movie-and Real
Joan Grant had an amazing knack for incisive writing about her past lives. Many books of this genre are fuzzy, feel-good bromides that leave us doubtful. The authenticity of Grant's experience rings true in every sentence of this work.

It reads like an exciting adventure novel- yet the solidity and internal consistency of her main characters are astounding- and the spiritual gems glistening throughout the narrative are there for anyone to share. The prose is crisp, measured, and not padded and brings the culture and perspective of ancient Egypt directly into the heart and mind of the reader.

I am glad than writer Harold Klemp (Autobiography of a Modern Prophet) recommended this author to me.

She WAS there indeed...
If you got to this page, please, please DO BUY Joan Grant's "Eyes of Horus". It is a wonderfully written novel (Which is suppossed to be a real life she remembers), it is wonderfully written, and the amount of details of everyday life makes it amazing to read. You will feel you are in old Egipt, seeing everything with your own eyes. The way she writes makes you even understand other ways of thinking than our own, because of what her characters say, the comparisons they make... Believe me! I am an hypercritical person and there is nothing phony in this book! Please buy it, you will not regret it!

An Infomative and Helpful Resource for the Layman
At last a book on learning disabilities that you do not need a doctorate in the subject to understand. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs some practical advice on this subject.

A highly informative and understandable resource
This is the best book I have read on the subject for adults with learning disabilities. Shapiro and Rich write in a way that is easily understandable by laymen and also in a way that is highly informative. If you have a learning disability, you can easily relate to their examples of other real people with similar problems and learn how LD problems are diagnosed, what causes the problem and treatment methods, including strategies and drugs. I would certainly reccommend this book for any adult who has a learning disability or simply wants to learn more

Fancywork and Fashion's Best Doll Clothes Book

Authors: Joan Hinds and Jean Becker
Amazon base price: $19.50
Average review score:

Great for Vintage doll lovers ,too!
I am always looking for doll clothes patterns ,for my dolls as well as my granddaughters dolls. This is a great book for both today's 18" girl dolls and the dolls from the 40s and 50's.
Patterns are in 2 size ranges to fit both slim bodied dolls as well as the average slightly fuller bodied !8" dolls.
Construction is simple and the book is full of tips and methods for cutting bulk in seams, designer detailing and specialty designs.
Maybe if enough interest is generated, the publishers will do another reprint. It's a great companion to The Essential Wardrobe book by the same authors.

A Terrific Book
If you own an 18" doll like the American Girl series, than this book would be wonderful. Of course, you have to enjoy sewing too! The patterns are very easy to make and really fun! I would highly recommend this book-
