Very Good Book
I liked this book very much. I learned a great deal about historical women's rights activists. I think that the book has a very comprehensive overview of the various feminists discussed. There is a decent amount of detail for each, but not so much that it bores you to read. The way the book is written makes it very easy to read, which also keeps your interest. I especially enjoy the writing about Olympe de Gouges. It is extremely interesting and in-depth. The only thing that kept me from giving this book 5 stars is that it did not include more women, it only focused on a few.

New found respect for an Ancient Practice
I admit to having been highly sceptical of this discipline. The word psychic to me had conjured up images of "Madame Marie" or some other soothsayer or con artist. While the profession is, admittedly rife with such creatures, Joan Pancoe is an entirely different case. A powerful, highly formidable spirit, she is an outstanding therapist who's been in private practice in New York for over 25 years. She is, in short, the real deal.

The book is fairly advanced material. I found that I had to go back and read some elementary Taoist and Chi Gung texts to get some foundation in the concepts discussed. It would help if the reader did that in advance. The book is channeled and the examples are taken from her cases. I highly recommend this.

Essay Collection on Origins & Transformations Orchestra
Well written compendium on the origins and transformations of the orchestra over time.

Although above the level of the newcomer, this has much info which will inform and interest music lovers of all levels in classical music interest.

It is thorough in its coverage of instrument development, composers, conductors, electronic recording, concerts, vocal vs. instrumental, etc.

A short, historically monumental book of unexpected force
Ourika is one of the first Western narratives ever to be told primarily from the perspective of an African, recently rediscovered from its relative obscurity. While Duras herself and her narrator are both white, the story is of the powerful tragedy of the life of a young black woman taken in by a rich French family in exile, and is mostly told by Ourika herself. While this synopsis sounded boring to me when I first picked the book up, I was instantly drawn in by the engaging language and highly emotional episodes of the heroine's unusual experience. At times I was actually moved to tears, despite my conscious resisitance. The character of Ourika is a three-dimensional gem of psychological strength, and her story is at once heartbreaking and hope-giving.

This edition is also physically beautiful and printed on nice paper; a steal for what is sure to become a more popular classic in the years to come.

The outcasts of Heaven Belt

Starship travel isn't always as clean and pretty...
... as most S/F stories portray it. This novel tells of a future where interstellar travel is a reality, but just barely. No galaxy-spanning empire, just a set of planets, some marginally habitable, full of colonists trying to survive, and sometimes to get ahead.
The system was called Heaven, because it contained resources enough to sustain life and maybe even more. But when an outside starship fell into the system on a trade and contact mission, the crew discover how easily people can make a hell out of heaven.
Civil war has reduced the once-great civilization of Heaven's Belt to a set of struggling, isolated societies, each too intent on their own survival to help the others. The crew of the starship Ranger must find a way out of the system before their ship is taken and used as the last weapon for the last war.
I enjoyed the differentness of this novel. Life in the future may not be as easy as most S/F tales portray it. What would our culture turn into if we ran out of resources?

A valuable resource
As a teacher of English as a Second Language, I have used many different picture dictionaries. The Oxford Picture Dictionary for Kids is very well organized and uses a group of characters that provide continuity throughout the dictionary. These characters provide a continual story line so that I use the dictionary not only for "finding words," but also as a base for teaching content-area information. The pictures are clear and well-defined and cover a large vocabulary spectrum.

Pattern for reconciliation of science & metaphysics
This near-death experiencer has recovered, despite grave odds and near impossibility, an experience of severe oxygen deprivation. Though it took her many months to retrieve the information that was given to her during her NDE, she is able to articulate both the process and the implications of this geometrical marvel, from both a scientific and a metaphysical perspective. The Pattern shows great promise as a tool for humanity to continue the struggle to chart a course for a win-win future. Physicists and spiritual seekers alike will be fascinated to read about this gift from beyond.
