Worth its price!
This little book is definately worth its little price! Broken up into five info-packed chapters (Diversity in the Universal Catholic Church, The Eastern Catholic Churches, Liturgical Life of the Eastern Catholic Churches, Beauty and the Arts in Eastern Christian Worship, Future Directions, Appendix) for Catholics that are not familiar with their Eastern Rite brothers and sisters. (My only complaint is that the author seems a bit focused on the Byzantine Catholic Church, and tends to neglect the other Eastern Rites consistently....) This book would make a wonderful gift for yourself, or anyone studying the universality of the Catholic Church! Especially recommended for individuals participating in R.C.I.A., Confirmation, or anyone with a leadership role within a particular parish. A definate must for any parish library!

Well, it IS my book!!
I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because I haven't had enough people read it yet. I've tried it on some good friends and each of them have cried. I figured that was pretty good, a book that could bring about that kind of emotion. Each of them cried for a different reason. Each of them could identify with what I wrote. Each of them were from Levittown.

My husband, who is not from Levittown, was blown away. Basically because he's in it and because it touched upon some really sensitive issues, stuff we've barely talked about ourselves and stuff we really didn't want anyone to know about.

I wrote this for my kids because I wanted to leave them with something to take along with them for life. Something to pass along to their kids, and their kids, etc. I also wrote this because I really thought I could help people see things differently. Maybe identify their own issues like drinking or adhd and change their lives - for the better. I also wanted to let young people out there know that if their lives seem like hell, there's so many other people in the same boat. You're not the only one. That's something I struggled with for years!

I hate saying that this is all fact, but it's the facts as I know them. In the state my brain is generally in, that may mean that it's all fiction. Whatever it may mean I never wanted to hurt anybody nor do I want to now. If I have I apologize with all my heart.

The emperor & the actress : the love story of Emperor Franz Josef & Katharina Schratt
Published in Unknown Binding by Weidenfeld and Nicolson ()

Interesting Love Story
After reading a book about Empress Elisabeth of Austria, I noted in the bibliography a book about her husband Emperor Franz Joseph and his long term paramour, Katharina Schratt. Because of the mental problems experienced by his wife, his relationship with her left the Emperor deeply unsatisified. He was able to find love with an Austrian actress. The emperor was in his 50's and the actress in her 30's and their romance lasted for the rest of their lives.

Author Haslip does an excellent job of describing the times in Vienna during the later half of the 19th century. The affair is touching in that it was carried on discreetly but left both participants with some measure of personal happiness. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in this time period and the personal lives of various historical figures.

Seems like a decent book
Well, the writing style of this book is friendly and enjoyable, it has useful and non-intimidating music-business chapters mixed in with the songwriting advice. He keeps taking about a song called "Sixteen Tons" which I've never heard of, but it's a Nashville-scene thing, that's cool.

:)
I love the Baby Bet series. If you have read the other books you know how close the MacAllister clan is and how in every book there is mention of Ted, Ryan's partner on the police force. Now we finally get to meet Ted in this book. Ted is very much a bachelor until he meets his very pregnant next door neighbor and decides to do the honorable thing and help her out. Of course, his neighbor Hannah is cautious because of her distrust towards men. Here she was a divorced pregnant woman and she was to believe that her hunk of a next door neighbor liked her. Ted has his work cut out for him, but that does not mean that he wants a future with Hannah-how can he when she will toss him out when she finds out his secret? So, he has to get rid of her right after the baby is born so that she never finds out the truth, but is that possible? I love that Ted can so openly care for this pregnant woman and another mans baby. The "secret" that he keeps drives me nuts because the reader knows that Hannah loves him and it will not matter to her, but Ted is so stubborn. The Baby bet comes into play in this book as in all the others. Only if you have read the other books you know that Forrest is the champion, but you will be suprised to find that he is dethrowned in this book. This was a nice addition to the series.

Interesting for Historical Purposes
"First Cases" is a collection of the first short stories by classic private eye writers featuring their heros (or heroines). That should be the book's caveat, as many of the protagonists had already appeared in full length novel form before these stories were published. The lineup includes such luminaries as Loren Estlemen's Amos Walker, Lawrence Block's Matthew Scudder, Bill Pronzini's "Nameless" and Editor Robert J. Randisi's own Miles Jacoby. All of the series characters featured are currently ongoing (or at least were as of 1996, when the book was published). Editor Randisi knows his stuff, having been the founder of the Private Eye Writers of America.

All that said, the quality of the stories varies. Some of the writers had yet to really find their voice and some (especially the older) stories are somewhat by-the-numbers. Nevertheless, the book is an inetersting historical artifactfor those who want insight on how their heros developed. My personal favorites are Block's and Estlemen's. They show again why they are, for my money, the two best and most consistent private eye writers currently working in the genre.

A charming bio of "the hermit of Croisset"
In "Flaubert" Henri Troyat has written another charming & cozy account of the life of Gustav Flaubert_____arguably the most meticulous literary prose stylist there ever was. Troyat covers all the bases of Flaubert's life starting with his childhood___his father was a solid ,bourgeois doctor___to his earliest literary stirrings & goes on to recount his transformation into one of the most obsessive literary perfectionists of all times. His dalliances with different mistresses ,his solitary forays into the uncharted waters of literary creation [from the safety of his well-stocked study overlooking the river____mostly at night____the light from his study serving as a landmark for the sailors] are narrated with verve .Troyat has drawn extensively from Flaubert's correspondence .Though charming , this work lacks the breadth & sweep of Troyat's " Tolstoy ".

This is a delightful collection of shaped poems all dealing with the theme of light. Candles, lightbulbs and lightening are just a few of the shapes used with wonderful words and images to create poems for children, parents and grandparents. A great book to read by candlelight.
