Maybe the only practical how-to for t'ai chi
Eager Westerners scoop up videos and books on t'ai chi hoping to learn this powerful movement form without a real, live teacher. "Ride the Tiger" is one of the few that can help you do just that! Simple, step-by-step, behaviorally specific instructions with photos and drawings are balanced with equally simple questions to self-check one's progress. The story of how the author, a nuclear physicist, was drawn to learn and then teach t'ai chi provides a unique slant on East meets West. His explanations of how it works based on his scientific understandings are especially intriguing. Qualified teachers are becoming more widely available, but in the meantime, this book is a useful tool.

Cool stuff for commiephiles
I'm taking Professor Urban's class on Soviet history, particularly recent political history, at Catholic University and we haven't even been assigned this book yet, but I really enjoy it. It's extremely interesting to see how people who lived under a distorted version of Marxism reconcile history with Marx's theories and ideology. The book is great, good for anyone who wants an epilogue to the history of the Soviet Union.

Great Book!
This Book is a great but can get a little boring. The recipes are really fun to make and eat. The discriptions about the countries were very interesting to read. But the one thing I didn't like was the experiments. I didn't think the book needed them and they were weird. example:determining the specific gravity of potatoes. I enjoyed this book and i hope you will too(if you buy it). this book is great for kids and adults alike. They will enjoy learning about different contrys, foods, and coultres.

Interesting
Joan Hohl certainly can write a range of romances. This historical is different from any I've read. Not being into vampire or time travel genres. Not that this is either of those. I've just never read sex scenes between a ghost and a human.

I thought the most interesting part of the book was the descriptions of how hard life was for women alone in the frontier west with no man to take care of them nor protect them. I could believe that Ms. Hohl did her research on this and believe the abuse of these young girls and how they really had to choice on how to survive except on their backs.

I don't know if it was because Jonathon was a ghost or what but the romance part didn't really grab me. Hence the 4 stars. I did fall in love with Wade Dunston. Those broody alpha males really get to me.

All in all, it's a pretty good read. Joan Hohl gets us again.

Shifting Cultures: Interaction and Discourse in the Expansion of Europe (Periplus Parerga, Bd. 4)

An interesting history collection - a few very good essays
This is an uncommon book, sadly not easy to find. It also should be cheaper. It is valuable for the 'hot' topic which it opens up, the cultural impact of European overseas expansion and contact with diverse indigenous cultures. Some of the essays are excellent (Vogel, Bustamante, the editors') but a couple are weak (esp. Monge). The introduction is crucial to understand the common themes underlying the various articles. Historians of early modern expansion and cross-cultural encounters should definitely read it.

A beautifully illustrated book for young children.
The artistic detail in the book, along with the association with the alphabet is ideal for young children. A very creative work that adds to literature for the youngest of readers. Well done!

A spirited heroine -- Recommended
Photojournalist Mack Marshall travels the world, risking dangerous assignments and getting the pictures no one else hazards. Mack always has a camera around his neck and dynamic words to accompany what he had seen. As bullets rain around him, in a remote village in a part of a country no one has ever heard of, Mack realizes there would be no one to mourn his death. When given another chance at life, he follows a forgotten lead, and finds his only remaining family.

Heather Marshall unwilling opens her door to a stranger claiming to be her deceased husband's half brother. Second hand clothes and a modest rented house are the best she can afford to provide her beautiful, seven-year-old twin daughters. Mack's presence underscores all the things she can't afford, but Heather has two things Mack doesn't have: family and dreams. Fiercely independent and equally protective of her girls, Heather doesn't want them to fall in love with Mack knowing he's going to leave for parts of the world unknown. Of course, she doesn't want to risk falling herself, either.

Joan Elliott Pickart's SINGLE WITH TWINS challenges priorities and perceptions with grace. A simple story made enchanting by a hero and heroine that discover the true worth of love and the joy to be found in reclaiming family and risking the heart. An entertaining, if predictable read, SINGLE WITH TWINS comes recommended.

written with a orginal style, it gave an interesting insight
I found this book very interesting in some parts and boring in others. Joan lingard captured the essence of the three girls' realtionship and innocence in a way of such reality it's truly amazing. I especially enjoyed the way Joan Lingard expressed the different religions and the views on them. "Teresa I could not epect to share my religon: her own was too important, but Rosie she was not religous." I thought this book showed how their friendship brought them together and their religon separated them. A very well written novel which I would reccomend to any who was interested in a fictional look at Ireland read.
