Hero's for Kids
We have been reading lives of the saints for a long time, but with the 60 Saints books the stories are seared in their brains and they ask for them over and over again. This has never happened with other lives of the saints books. The author writes in a very kid friendly manner. We have read the stories aloud with our Girls Club and have entertained kids from 5 to 14.

Lindqvist
Sven Lindqvist continue to examine the history of Western racism after his magnificent "Exterminate all the Brutes". But this time he does not search for the racist ideology itself but for the men and women who questioned the basics in the racist ideology. Well known, and forgotten fighters of racist thought, are here displayed with their work and arguments against the racist idea and thought. But Lindgvist doesen't stop there. The battle between racists and their opponents are described, with an intense feeling, that almost makes you feel a part of the discussion. This is a great book, although the reader would benefit to first read "Exterminate all the brutes" before reading this one.

The small outsider; the story of an autistic child
Published in Unknown Binding by Angus and Robertson ()

Awesome!
I struggled to keep reading but neither could I put this story of the Hundley family and their love for David down. I've had no experience or contact with autism, except several months ago a handsome young man (in his 30s)in the supermarket, apparently alone, kept turning in tight circles (smiling even when he saw me watching him)as he continued shopping. From some of your descriptions I think perhaps he was autistic & now I'd like to see him again and say hello. Thank you for writing this journal, for allowing your readers to come into your lives. I can't adequately convey my respect, admiration & appreciation for you and other families who have fought so hard, and continue to fight, I'm sure, for your children. I would love to have an update on your family if at all possible

A small pinch of weather, and other stories

Small Pinch is Excellent
These utterly charming short stories fall into the category of "Written for Children, But Not Really". Sly, mischievous, topsy-turvy, and wonderful, each story takes the standard fairy tale mode of the Brothers Grimm and crosses over into a sort of Twilight Zone realm.

The stories alternate, first with a fairy tale, and then an installment of tales about a modern, suburban brother and sister named Mark and Harriet. These stories were the most entertaining to me, because the adventures that the children got into were hysterical. A small sample of this is Harriet performing magic in her room (homework for her Spells and Witchcraft course at school), and asking Mark to please answer the phone, because her hands were covered with prussic acid. The best story in the book, in my opinion, is "The Serial Garden", in which Mark assembles a miniature garden (from the pieces stenciled on the backs of cardboard cereal boxes), and is able to transport himself into the garden, meeting a princess who has been imprisoned there for centuries. I can't say anymore about it, except that it's wonderful and heartbreaking.

The other stories hold up just as well. "The Lilac in the Lake" is the story of a true absent-minded professor and seven women who wish to keep him company, and is also one of the best.

Joan Aiken hit it just right with this one. It's hard to find, so nab a copy if you're able.

Interesting and enjoyable for the whole family
Snowshoe Thompson is a wonderful book about an immigrant who has helped a young boy communicate with his father. This book has kept the interest of our 1/2 year old and 3 year old during our night time story reading ritual. Having read it at least 100 times, I am still delighted to read it to our boys.

historical fiction - Egyptian view of the birth of Moses
Whether historical fiction, or the biography of a previous life (as claimed by the author), this book is well written. It describes the life of Pharoh and the politics of the Egyptian Court just prior to the birth of Moses. This is an entirely different account of Moses' birth than the one we are accustomed to reading. It is most entertaining and quite believable. I enjoyed the book very much.

Miracuosly Sam survives and while living at home recoupperating from the massive injury, Sam meets his old friend Annette, who falls for her former schoolmate, even though his is only part of the vibrant young man she once knew. They spend the next 15 years together enjoying life to the fullest extent that life can offer Sam, even though he is almost completely confined to a wheelchair. Multicultural Introduction to Sociology
I have used Ferrante's text now in my introductory sociology classes for over five years. In its 4th ed., the text has been greatly recieved in all my classes. What is so different about the text is that it has an international and multicultural perspective. While examining the same concepts found in most introductory texts, Ferrante's work explores them within a wider, international context, all the while providing a comparative look at American society. Each chapter takes the reader to a different part of the globe, providing both excellent historical and contemporary examples. Most importantly (especially for my students), the text allows the instructor to introduce sociology and diversity at the same time. Not only timely, but imperative in this emerging global, postmodern era. You'll get a lot of miles out of this one!

Another special one
If you like Joan's work (or if you haven't gotten around to reading it to find out that you will like it...), this volume is special. Not only does it sing with the usual word-picture-fun-truth, but this book follows a New Mexican woman through her (very real) lifespan. Delicious...
