The Insomniac's Dictionary: The Last Word on the Odd Word

Authors: Paul Hellweg and Joan Leigh Herder
Amazon base price: $19.95

Browser's paradise
I can't say how many times I've flipped through the pages of this volume. Hellweg has collected a bevy of wonderful words, and has them categorized into fun chapters. You can be astounded by what words exist, and then have fun attempting to force the most unwieldy ones into conversations.

Perfect for word-lovers
Containing weird, wacky, wonderful words of all sorts, the Insomniac's Dictionary is out-of-this-world for those sleepless nights. It's got love and sex words, fear words, food words, word words, any kind of word you could possibly imagine. (Did you know there is a word for "the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth"? It's in there!) It is very entertaining, humorous, and great fodder for party conversation. :)

Teach To The Standards Using Fun Extension Activities!

"Irresistable 123's" -- like Novelli's companion book, "Irresistable ABC's" -- is a collection of ideas from classroom teachers all over the United States. The activities meet the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) Standards for math, which means that ALL of the math strands are addressed if you use a variety of the activities found in this book.

Like Novelli's ABC's book, "Irresistable 123's" complements whatever math program(s) you are currently using in your classroom, and the activities are high-interest and appeal to children with all types of learning modalities.

This valuable book contains poems, learning centers activities, art projects, fun games, and many other projects and activities for expanding and extending your curriculum, including projects suitable to send home for "family math" type experiences.

You'll find fun activities for counting, numbers, skip counting, calendar, sorting and sequencing, matching, one-to-one correspondance, graphing, charting, shared language and writing, and a whole lot of other concepts you're already working with.

There are also computer extensions and tie-ins, plus literature-based activities for books you're already using, like "Five Little Monkeys," "Ten Black Dots," and many other favorite stories.

This book is highly recommended for use throughout the year for grades Pre-K through 2nd.

Happy Teaching!

An Irresistible Resource
Joan Novelli has written another excellent early childhood book! I enjoy the easy-to-implement, age-appropriate activities as much as my Kindergarten students do. The book includes reproducibles for manipulatives, learning center ideas, and many literature connections. I especially like it because it doesn't just cover numeration and number sense. It includes patterning, graphing, and sorting, too. "Irresistible 1,2,3s" is not only an excellent hands-on math resource, it's a fun one!

Funny well-written book!
This early chapter book was just right for my daughter (8 yrs). I read it after she did, because she told me it was great and I wanted see what kind of books she liked. It was cute. I especially enjoyed the kid giving himself a "cootie shot" and Ivy's creative book report ideas. The kids' relationships and the school stuff was funny and realistic. My daughter and I recommend this book.

Giving a book report can be scary
As a child, I avoided all forms of public speaking like the plague. For me: Oral book report day = do your best to get out of it day. Consequently, I grew up to be one of those adults who's afraid of public speaking. Public speaking is often cited by adults as their number one fear. This book is amusing, but it also gives subtle hints about how to speak in public. My daughter kept coming to tell me something funny that just happened in this book as she read it, and she and her friend nicknamed themselves Ivy and Holly after the main characters. But I think she absorbed the message about how to speak in front of a group as well.

Jennifer Jane's Blanky

a good example of gentle mothering.
I liked Jennifer Jane's Blankey. Discriptive adjectives for simple items found in many childrem's rooms, helping them to visualize the items. Gentle wording with a loving attitude in the end helps the young child to part with her Blankey, in her own way.

Simple Solution to Treasured Object Syndrome
Sometimes some of life's seemingly complicated problems can be dealt with simply and lovingly. In this story about a young child with an attachment to her blanket, a simple solution resolves the entire problem. Grown-ups and small children alike who encounter a similar problem will learn from this delightful story. Spare, simple illustrations accompanying the story will make this "readable" for very young children again and again on their own. This is a "must read" for any child with a treasured object!

Jenny Holzer- Protect me from what I can't see
Have you ever stopped to think how many times we are bombarded by truisms everyday? Get this book and you will get a clue. In the Truisms series over exposure to banality reveals how numbed out we all are. Take a cliche like "Children are the hope to the future" and place beside "Children are the most cruel of all". We say and repeat these truisms but do we really realize that they are empty in themselves ? Do we perceive the contradictions ? How we mold reality to suit our needs ? Truisms sooth us with the cushioned feeling of the "generally accepted truth". Jenny Holzer literally splashes intimate thoughts, truisms, activist slogans over the landscape. These truths, half-truths and huge lies stare out at us in billboards, park benches like a conscience made physical. This is art made on the very border of reality and language.

Fantastic coverage of a fantastic artist.
The book listed on this page, a monograph on Jenny Holzer by Phaidon Press, is fabulous. It contains information on Holzer's wide and influential art career, from her Truisms posters of the 'seventies to her electronic LED signs, carved stone benches, and virtual art pieces of the 'nineties.

This book is also unique, within the Holzer bibliography, because of the "Artist's Choice" section where Holzer provides excerpts from books and writings that have influenced her, along with explanations of why she's moved by them.

If you're interested in modern art, or women artists, this is a must-read

photographs of woman engaged in ordinary activities of life
4/20/99

Never have I seen photographs of women engaged in "ordinary" tasks of life so passionately portrayed as I've seen them in Joan Roths book. I have had the honor of meeting this talented woman and was fortunate enough to have mine personally autographed as well.

A Wonderful Resource...
I was introduced to Ms. Baez's music by an old, dear friend. When I found this book online, and purchased it, I was elated. It was like visiting with my friend all over again. Everything you ever wanted to know about this artist, and her music, are included in this well-written, thoughtful tome. A must read for any Baez-o-phile!

I only wish my friend's email address was that easy to find...

EXTREMELY COMPLETE AND DETAILED
Few people today stop to ponder the career of Joan Baez, but for those who remember the folk music and coffee houses of the 60's, Joan will never be forgotten. She is an enigma to those who are products of the 70's and 80's because folk music, true folk music, appears to be a dying art with each new generation.

Joan is not only a unique and talented artist but also well known for her compassion and activism in speaking our for social rights of those wronged by poverty and political injustice. Her songs have meaning, depth and a story to tell. This book is one of the most complete and detailed accounts of Joan's life and career, and for those who are fans and remember her music, the book is sure to be a cherished treasure. The book is well worth the money and a true collector's item.

What a tribute to THE STAR!
This is indeed an interesting book about the life and career of the late Joan Crawford. The text about her 80 movies is interesting, but even more fascinating is the author's collection of pictures. The pictures chosen show the transformation of one of silver screen's most underrated actresses. Her face undergoes such interesting changes as the years went by in her career. Truly this coffee- table sized book is one of my most cherished books I have on the late actress. Surely everyone who has been interested in Joan Crawford and her career would find the book very interesting.

What a glorious tribute to one of Hollywood's Stars!
I was delighted to find this book several years ago. It is indeed a treat to read the information Alexander Walker gives about my favorite actress. The factual information he gives is well-written. Even more important to me than the accuracy of his words, however, is the myriad photographs he has included in this marvelous book. For those who have not followed the late actress' career, the book will be a treat to see the many ways Joan Crawford changed her "face" to meet the needs of her audience. The book is a lovely tribute to a very fine actress. I believe she would have been pleased herself to see such a lovely book. It is a pity it is now out-of-print.

Excellent recipes!
The recipes are fast, easy, and taste great! My husband's favorite is probably the Curried Chicken Salad with Mango - it's a miracle that I can get him to eat a salad for dinner. Now my mom wants it for Christmas.

Its a sticky page book!
Joan makes a comment in the book that she hopes it becomes the readers stickypage book. The one you go back to time after time and the pages become sticky from use. It has for me. I was very apprehensive about purchasing a "celebrity" cookbook..looked at it and thumbed the pages no less than six times. But its worth the purchase price for the recipes alone. You don't have to read about Joan if you don't want to. The recipes are fantastic and everyone I have served to guests has elicited raves and requests for copies of the recipes
