Bringing the past to life
I was born in Coaldale, Carbon County. I grew up in Slatington, only a few miles from the Carbon County line, and spent some of the best hours of my boyhood tramping along the Appalachian Trail through the Lehigh Gap. That explains my personal interest in "Smokestacks and Black Diamonds: A History of Carbon County, Pennsylvania."
It doesn't explain how much I enjoyed the well-chosen photos and well-written essays in the book. The volume also reminded me of how much I didn't know about the county of my birth.
Author-editor Joan Campion does an excellent job of combining her own writing and that of contributors like Lance Metz and Rita Plotnicki to tell the story of Carbon County's industrial, agricultural and cultural heritage. I can't say too much about the selection of photos by George Harvan, who dedicated his professional life to capturing coal-mining on film.
If you like local history, you will enjoy this book. If you have had the good fortune to have lived or worked in the area, your enjoyment will be doubled.

Stanton's Garage
I haven't yet read a play by Joan Ackermann that I didn't like. Stanton's Garage is a wonderful full-length play comedy about the people stuck in a country garage somewhere on the road between nowhere and nowhere else. The cast includes five males and three females ages ranging from sixteen to sixty. Ackermann's so easy with language, it's great to read and great to produce - funny and poetic. A nice look at some human relationships, quirky, and not the same old stuff you see in all the other plays. Read the play, do the show.

Women's history for all
Alice Fletcher was a woman of many interests and talents. As one of the first woman anthropologists in the U.S., she spent many years working with, studying and advocating for Native American tribes. This book is an interesting study of her life and the times in which she lived. A really interesting read.

A Superior Book!
A truly wonderful book! This coffee table format book by Canadian couple Gary and Joanie McGuffin tells the story of their 2,000 mile circumnavigation of Lake Superior - the largest expanse of fresh water in the world. The book contains approx 140 wonderful photographs, many of them breathtaking. Gary McGuffin is a very talented photographer who has created many unique photos of this great, beautiful lake. He has made use of unusual lighting on many occassions to produce stunning photos. I particularly liked some of the winter shots - I could feel the chill looking at the photos of the ice-lined caves. The personal narrative of the couple's trip was written by Joanie and is an interesting read however could have been made better by inclusion of maps. Also the layout makes reading difficult at times with the type sometimes extending across the full width of the page. The book is superbly produced - printed in Canada - with excellent photo reproductions on high quality paper. At 28 bucks this book is excellent value...well worth buying for the photos alone.

Fantastic Hysterical Read
Joan Johnston always writes a good book, wasn't too crazy about Stony Carlton but it was a good read. The reason to read this book is Single in the Saddle! What a hoot. Ms. Thompson could have left off the fung shue stuff or not referred to is so often but the story has so much hilarity that it is worth it. The trip to the grocery store and the installation of the waterfall are worth the whole thing! I've known guys like Stony Arnett and his ranch hands and they are great. I could really identify with them. Daphne seems like a bit of a ditz but she manages to rearrange their lives and has fun doing it. Great quick read.

The stories are basically selections from legends or particular aspects of saints' lives, presented in a rather "story hour" fashion. In fact, the narrative seems more like a favourite aunt telling a story than prose. The tales are not historically accurate in many cases, but there always is enough of solid underlying themes to get kids to learn them in spite of themselves.
My one caution is that this is strictly an "early reader" book. It is not accurate or thorough enough for anyone old enough to be doing research for a religion class, and anyone above the age of 8 is likely to find the constant definitions of words annoying. Nor is it a "read aloud" book for tiny ones. Joan's manner of expression, which basically has her "telling" the story in her own style, would make the words sound stilted in another's voice.
Joan Windham is an engaging, witty writer, and young girls of the current generation should enjoy this work as much as did their grandmothers.
