Dark Interval (Black Dagger Crime)
Published in Hardcover by Chivers North Amer (May, 1995)
Author: Joan Aiken

Used price: $0.75
Collectible price: $7.00

Moody, Suspenseful
This novel is a fine example of Aiken's gothic romance novels; perfect for rainy day reading, it is satisfyingly dark and just unpredictable enough to keep the reader on edge. The main character's hateful and abusive family is believably drawn, which contributes much to the novel's effectiveness--this is real, dreary misery, not the colorful Dahl-like cruelty of some of her children's work. The resulting tension throws the heroine's search for love (and our sympathetic hopes) into sharp relief.

Reminiscent of Shirley Jackson's short suspense novels, this is a powerfully written and engaging work. Highly recommended.

Desert Padre: The Life and Writings of Father John J. Crowley (1891-1940)

A biography that lets the subject speak out
Father John Crowley was an unassuming man of unassuming physical presence whose humor and passion for the people and place of the California desert almost disappeared from memory. Joan Brooks' Desert Padre captures the spirit of a fascinating man. Her meticulous research lets Father John Crowley speak in his own voice about Owens Valley water wars, show business in the Alabama Hills and Death Valley's Shorty Harris.

Don't let the copious quotations from Father Crowley's weekly "Sage and Tumbleweed" columns keep you from getting started in this book. Most authors intrude on their subject. Ms. Brooks, like Father Crowley's nom de plume - Inyokel, steps aside for her subject to take center stage.

For anyone fascinated by the American desert, by California history or by the life of an unusual common man, Desert Padre is a "must read.

A recognizable Regency plot with a twist
The story begins with the hero Mark Cheney marrying a beautiful young debutante then moves to the heroine Laura Dalwood marrying a handsome landowner. Both marriages are abyssmal failures until Mark and Laura are mercifully widowed. In steps Mark's aunt and Laura's godmother Lady Maria who first manages to make Laura the surrogate mother for Mark's orphaned son, then later suggests that for the boy's sake it would be best if Mark simply married Laura. Needless to say--given their pasts--neither Mark or Laura are eager for marriage, but once they agree they find themselves surprisingly well suited.

Despite their happiness, rumors abound that Mark was responsible for his first wife's death and so when soon after their marriage Laura begins having suspicious accidents, society begins to gossip that he is trying to rid himself of his second wife as well.

It's a fairly normal Regency/Gothic plot to have a heroine marry a hero with a bad reputation and then find herself wandering through the second half of the novel attempting to decide if her husband is trying to kill her. Thankfully, Wolf avoided that plot and instead took the delightful turn of the heroine wising up to the fact that someone is setting her husband up to look like a killer thereby allowing Laura and Mark to stand together. The couple then sets out to solve the mystery of who is the true villian and why he wants her dead and Mark blamed for it.

Some nice non-standard twists in the plot and a likable and intelligent hero and heroine make this an enjoyable romance. A good read.

Enjoyable insight into Louisiana history and culture!
Set in Louisiana in the Depression era, this book tells the story of Tina, a well-off young lady who leaves her plantation home to teach school to the French-speaking Cajuns. While living alone on the bayou, Tina learns much about the provision of her heavenly Father, and the lives of her new-found Cajun friends. Two men in Tina's life vie for her friendship: Horace, a wealthy, sophisticated gentleman who wants Tina to leave the bayou and marry him; and Paul, a hard-working engineer who struggles with accepting Tina's faith in God. I have known the author, Mrs. Frederickson, personally. She drew on her own experience of growing up in Louisiana to write DOWN IN CAJUN COUNTRY. This book provides much insight into Louisiana culture, such as a description of a Mardi Gras celebration. Although the writing style is a bit jerky, careful reading provides an enjoyable experience. I have read DOWN IN CAJUN COUNTRY three times, and my appreciation grew on each successive time.

A must for the eye doctor!
This is a great concise text that presents the ocular side effects of almost every drug that's on the market. I have yet to find a drug that is not in there. While there are constantly new drugs being formulated and released there may not always be what you are searching for in this book...but there will be that drug category which will give a good idea to the practitioner about what to expect. This book saves time and frustration for the Optometrist or Ophthalmologist in that we do not have to repeatedly look at the PDR and sift through the mounds of information presented in it.
