Cults (Lucent Overview Series)
Published in Library Binding by Lucent Books (January, 1998)

Not recommended
I was stunned to discover that this book is intended to be a research title for children. In my opinion, the author's subtle language choices and apparent disdain for "the anti-cult movement" makes me question her bias. The book appears to be loaded with biased quotes and examples which I would not put in front of an impressionable adolescent. She explains that researchers "no longer use the word (cult), preferring the terms 'alternative religions' or 'new religious movements'." She also states that parents "kidnap" "forcibly detain" and "trick" their children into leaving these so-called loving and supportive alternative religions. Yikes.

The Forest Family
Published in Paperback by Tundra Books (August, 2001)
Authors: Joan Bodger and Mark Lang

The Forest Family
I found The Forest Family very difficult to understand. There was such a mixture of stories thrown together -- everything from biblical (Ruth and Naomi) to King Arthur. I couldn't identify what the author was trying to communicate to her readers or who, really, was her intended audience. Even though this book was in the children's section of our library, I wondered at times if the themes or message weren't adult in nature. Pages 72 - 74 focus on "What does a woman really want?" I found myself asking why I was reading this book to our 8 yr. old son. I was as perplexed at the end of the book as my son was (yes, we finished it). Although I do not believe in censorship, I question whether or not this book should be advertised and promoted as a children's book.

This book is the Assignments edition.
This book is a supplement to the textbook. It doesn't say it is the Assignments version on your website. You really should add that into the title.

The Guardian Ad Litem Handbook
Published in Ring-bound by Legal Education Publishing (June, 1997)
Author: Joan N. Alschuler
Amazon base price: $145.00
Average review score:

"Guardian ad Litem - State of Wisconsin - Attorneys ONLY"
This book is for Guardian ad Litems in the State of Wisconsin and who are attorneys only. This book quotes Wisconsin laws only and is not a resource for just any reader. It is sectioned very nicely and has examples of court forms pertinent to Wisconsin. Unfortunately the description on the book does not make note that this book is from the State of Wisconsin and thus many people interested in this type of work would make a tremendous investment for nothing buy having to pay the return shipping costs. Also it is accompanied by a disk for this book with forms and such that would augment someones work in this area.

Hawaiki 2000 B.C. to Hokianga
Published in Unknown Binding by J.M. Leaf ()
Author: Joan M. Leaf
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

amateur work based on misconceptions
Leaf is an amateur New Zealand historian and genealogist who accepts the untenable 19th Century ideas of Tregear about a Indian origin for the Maori. She also believes in a late-prehistoric world civilisation (based on Churchward's fantasies of 'Mu') involving pre-Polynesian cultures in NZ and massive early diffusion more generally. Like a number of amateur NZ thinkers, Leaf uncritically regards orally transmitted stories and genealogies as very reliable. Her comparative linguistic and cultural methodology (shared with other current NZ diffusionists such as Doutre) is far too imprecise and unsystematic; it reflects pre-scientific ideas. This book will not obtain an academic response because Leaf presents her account as a narrative without any references or notes on archaeological or other evidence; but it is worth reviewing it here so as to discourage acceptance of its message.

Hong Kong (Cities of the World)
Published in Paperback by Children's Book Press (August, 1998)
Authors: R. Conrad Stein and Joan Downing
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

Enthnocentrism
Stein did present a lot of facts about this former British colony, but his subjective and prejudiced viewpoint in writing something aimed at young reader is disappointing. He constantly emphasised greed and arrogance of the Chinese people but his attitude reflected in the book is very much of an arrogant and snobbish nature, a very much biased view. In fact, I am surprised to know that he actually has a degree in history! The approach he has taken is quite unprofessional and lacks an in-depth view into the historical side of Hong Kong,A good example of ethnocentrism in historical research.

It is both sad and unfortunate for someone who knows nothing about the Chinese or Hong Kong to think what the author says is true.

How to publish a profitable electronic newsletter
I'm shocked that a company like Amazon[.com] would sell such a nothing product. It consists of 15 PDF pages - only 7 of which have relevant text (much of which are just lists of websites). The other 8 pages are cover, contents, listing of other product, etc. Don't you review these product yourselves. I paid $ Canadian for essentially nothing. I can't believe your selling this piece of junk. I'm the manager of a government agriculture publishing operation and I guarantee we wouldn't even consider selling this thing for $.

an incomplete hodge podge of information that is incomplete
This book gives the bare minimum of information. The information recieved will direct you to another page/section where that information is incomplete. After all how can someone tuneup an engine without nomenclature/adjustment settings? I was expecting a lot more. Example;See illistration #4........There is no illistration #4!

The master may have written it .... but
Im glad that it was published under the Anonymous author label

James Jenninngs is one of my top favorites but I don't know what happened with Joy & Joan ....

The story deals with a young Joy who, married to Marc always wondered what joys of the frlesh she was really missing. Of course thats where Joan comes into play ...

I had real real trouble maintaing concentration of this very disjointed and soewhat uerotic book ..... If you are a masochistic lover of historic dryness yo may enjoy this book ...
