Hysterical & Heartwarming
You've got to read it. Pick it up for a picker upper, read a little, then put it aside for another picker upper another time. Funny and fun.

Yada, yada, not so yada
A very entertaining book that brings all the web together in one binder. Some of the subjects will be very new and others will be memories of past surfing. All in all, this book is worth having ... just to share with others the uniqueness and diversities of the internet.

Great for reading on the 100th day
I read this book to my class on the 100th day of school every year. It's short, energetic, idea-inspiring, and the kids love the rhyme. It mirrors the way we celebrate the 100th day at our school, so the kids think it's fun to see another class celebrating in a similar way.

My kids love this 100th Day book
This is easy enough for my 6 year old and her best (7 year old) friend really likes it too. A fun read for the 100th day of school.

great book
If you you are wanting a book that would grabb you and make you keep reading, read this book. It is just the most exciting book there is. Trust me on this. Have fun reading!

Don't forget the illustrations!
There are more than enough reasons to pick up this book if you have any interest in crows or birds in general or even seeing a good example of descriptive biological studies, however one point missed by others are the beautiful illustrations in this volume that are well above average for a science book.

There are very few books about Corvids, and even fewer based on North American research, but this wonderful volume is a solid step in the right direction that is both well informed while also personable, leaving one to hope that future volumes or at least more research on these birds will result.

Any Corvid enthusiasts should purchase this book without hesitation as it is a relatively inexpensive and irreplacible contribution to the literature.

Detailed observations of corvid behavior
With a keen observer's eye and a flair for marvelous prose, Kilham has written a book that is not only an important resource for researchers in behavioral biology, but also a delightful read for any nature lover.

GREAT!!!
I thought that this book was very informative and easy to read. I research on corvid communication and even found the book to have VERY important information. Anyone interested in birds in general should read this book!

Introducing The Most Beautiful Ballpark In Creation
Every fan of the the Giants should get this book and wallow in the beauty of Pacific Bell Park, if you can't get there yourself. The park really is probably the most beautiful ballpark in baseball, a tiny little gem that nevertheless plays like a huge pitcher's stadium thanks to the bizarre asymmetry of its outfield (and a San Francisco wind that the park's engineering turned into an ally, instead of the vicious Hawk it was at Candlestick Park.)

But it's also a great collection of essays from baseball writers including George Will and Peter Gammons, and local writers sharing memories of the team and the long years of waiting in the cold and fog for a world championship that still hasn't come. Those essays are some of the best parts of the book, moving and nostalgic in the best sense.

The body text, that tracks the long road from New York through Candlestick to the drama of building a new ballpark without the safety net of public money, then chronicles the great 2000 season, is little more than acceptable, but in a coffee table book what you want is gorgeous photographs and insightful vignettes, and "Splash Hit" has that in aces.

Awesome
Great pictures of what has to be one of the nicest sports facilities in the world. I've been to one game here - and as a resident of Seattle, I honestly think that Safeco is a better place to watch a game. However, no stadium can match the asthetic views and its situation in one of the most beautiful cities in the world makes Pac Bell #1.

A Great Book For A Great Ball Park
Pac Bell Park is one of the newest and one of the best ball parks in America. This book is a great tribute to that new park and the Giants' first year playing in it. The book goes into the history and politics behind the park and has a lot of good pictures of the 2000 Giants players in action. Peter Magowan and local and national writers also added illuminating essays to the text. There are a lot of spectacular pictures of the park from all different angles and some interesting construction shots.

A little disappointing was that the book did not have much on the Polo Grounds, Seals Stadium, and Candlestick Park. Even though the Giants no longer play at the old parks, their history is indelibly intertwined with the newer ball park and they deserved more space.

This belongs on any Giants fan's coffee table, especially if they have visited the park.

Good Book
I read this when i was a little kid and couldn't bear to give it away when i cleaned out my room because it was such a good story. Very good read and is very entertaining!

Lifetime favorite!
If I could choose only one book that impacted my life, it would be Striped Ice Cream. I first read it in elementary school (30 years ago) and find myself reading it again every so often. The characters are so real, and you become involved in what they feel. The mother does a fantastic job of being a single parent to five children during a time (1960's?) when it was neither common or accepted. Inspite of difficult times, the family's strong ties to each other and their fine character would serve as excellent role models for any child today. The main story line is "peppered" with moments of humor and warmth of a close family. The main character Becky, is easy for 3rd & 4th graders to relate to. This would be an excellent story for any child.

Striped Ice Cream
I read this book countless times when I was a child and now my 8 year old loves it -- she's now reading it for the fourth time. I vividly remember this story. Despite family hardships and personal sadness, Becky finds happiness in the smallest pleasures--a new dress, spaghetti with chicken and striped ice cream.

If only we could get the whole world to read this book...
I love what Ifland has to say, and I agree wholeheartedly with the idea that it is sugars and flours that are making us and our society sick and crazy. I had been thinking and heading this way for a while, and reading her book helped me to take the next step into freeing my body of these substances.

For my own first phase, I gave up obvious refined sugar and all wheat for Lent. I have never felt better, and plan to continue this way. I could never have done it a few years ago, when I couldn't digest a meal without the acid of a cola to assist me!

I gave the book only four stars because it is in dire need of a really good professional editor. (I would give it 4.5 if I could!) She tells you from the outset that she is just writing down her own experiences and ideas, and the casual style comes across all too clearly. This book is so important, and I think a good editor could clarify the information that is presented.

The second weakness is the recipes. Again, she warns you that she is deliberately vague with them, to give you the idea of how to cook this way rather than specific recipes. As something of a "foodie", I was very turned off by some of the recipes, and in particular by their general style. I could see that if you were really working to recover from a serious food addiction, you might need to take her rather austere route, but in general I really don't believe that wanting food that looks and tastes great is at all incompatible with eliminating sugars and flours from your diet. Quite the opposite!

I hate to be the only person to give a down note to the book. I do still highly recommend it - all my friends can attest to that! I'd just really like to see it produced more professionally. Do read the other reviews, they are quite inspiring.

Joan's Book Changed My Life
I sat down to read Joan Ifland's book with a king-sized Snickers candy bar in my hand--I was that helpless where sugar and flour were concerned. But two chapters in, I knew that what I was reading was going to change my life forever. Joan provides a blueprint for living a life free of binges, uncontrollable cravings, and raging. This book is not a diet book, it is a simple, straight-forward guide for a lifetime of good health, and all the associated benefits--including better self-esteem and personal satisfaction. Since I have eliminated sugar and flour from my diet, I have lost more than 70 pounds. My sleep apnea symptoms have disappeared, and I no longer snore! My knees can support my body without pain, and I no longer have to climb the stairs one step at a time. I believe I may have avoided a collision course with diabetes. But the very best part of Joan's program for me is the inner calm I feel where sugars and flours are concerned. I no longer worry and wonder and obsess about where my next sugar "fix" is coming from, and I am able to make rational decisions about what I need to eat and when. If you ever find yourself eating food that your body doesn't need, you will understand what I mean about being set free. Please give Joan's book a try. Her words are simple, but profound, and they can change your life. May you discover a new, wonderful way of living.

This book is for carbohydrate addicts....
In this book Ms. Ifland describes what I did not recognize as my addiction to carbohydrates. While addiction may seem a rather strong term to describe anyone's relationship with food, Ms Ifland does a good job of detailing, and documenting, the pattern of compulsive and irrational eating habits that can arise as a result of the way the body digests and processes simple and complex sugars. In the same way that booze can trigger excessive drinking in an alcoholic and a drug can lead to uncontrolled using by a drug addict it is shown that carbohydrate metabolism in many individuals can lead to irrational cravings and eating urges -- even if an individual is not, per se, hungry. I had always thought that I could control my eating and lose weight "if I put my mind to it." While a person must always be ready to employ mental tools to combat compulsive eating, the elimination of carbohydrates from my diet has eliminated the overwhelming physiological urges that were almost unbeatable by sheer willpower. This food program takes away the offending substances that drove me to the pantry or the refrigerator. In my compulsion to reestablish my sugar levels, I would cram anything into my mouth -- from bread to candy to fruit to nuts. Once I started on this binge I would not stop, even when feeling full or when the symptoms of hypoglycemia had abated. Later, when my blood sugar levels had come down, I would resume eating in an attempt to get another jolt of sugar, or to insure that they did not dip down to low levels again. I did not know that I was being driven by my bodily cravings, until I read this book. I must say that within the first three days of eliminating sugar, flour and wheat I saw a dramatic drop in my craving for excessive food intake. It was such a liberating experience! If you think you might fit the description of one who struggles with carbohydrate addiction, give this food program a try. It is not as hard to give up these offending substances up as it may first seem. And you will not be sorry with the results. I lost 30 pounds without effort over three and one half months.

Finding a New Home
When Rose and Lila's parents go to Africa for a year, for their work as doctors, Rose(age 10) and Lila(age 8) must stay with their maternal grandmother, whom they hardly know. As they snoop through her house (Book 1), they soon discover that "Far Nana" has a few secrets worth knowing. "Far Nana" runs a doll hospital from her home and has the intuitive skill of listening to the stories of the dolls she repairs. She tells these stories to the girls in the first person, from the point of view of the doll. In these books, the reader is reading the ongoing story of Rose and Lila adjustments to living with their grandmother and the historical story of a doll, in a story-within-a-story format.

In "Tatiana Comes to America" the girls listen to a story about a doll who escaped Russia in 1907 during a time of violence against the Jewish people. Her family came to America to escape the persecution. Tatiana boards a ship for America with her girl, Anya. I enjoyed Tatiana's story because it was lively and and had some unexpected surprises by the end.

Overall, this book is an excellent introduction to the series and I would recommend reading it first if you are interested in this series. We see Rose and Lila say good-bye to their parents and watch them discover their grandmother's secret. The girls begin to find that there will be some good things about staying with "Far Nana", including the wonderful stories of the dolls!

The reading level on this book is for grade 3. I would not recommend it for readers under 6 years of age because the intertwining stories may be confusing. A paper doll is included with each book, which may be of interest to some readers.

great book
My daughter and I loved these books. I thought it was right up there with American Doll books. Great story and great historical/educational infomation.

doll hospital is great
I liked this book very very much . I didn't even know what a doll hospital is. Now I know that you can fix dolls there. I wish I could have all the stuff in the doll hospital like wigs eyeballs and hats and shoes for dolls and cats .

As a professional singer, I greatly enjoyed the chapter on arranging. What a unique concept for a book.

Review
What sets this book apart from the rest is its motivational style. When I Sit Down to Play not only gives you the tools to learn how to play the piano, but it convinces you that you can do it.

Great info!
This book packed so much information into 166 pages. It was great - concisely written.

Death Comes for the Arch-theorists
With great economy and acerbic wit Joan Acocella takes on the Amazons of feminist theory and vanquishes the lot. Her research is detailed and her sources impressive, and for once we have a critic who loves literature and the people who make it more than the ideologies they represent or the dogmas they profess. Acocella skewers anti-scholarly scholarship and retrieves one of America's great writers from the dark grip of the dogmatists. Her account of Cather's early life and preparation is concise and filled with understanding; what's more in the briefest space she tells the story of that life in the context of the age and gives us Cather's achievement without the burden of spurious literary theories. Students of literature and literary criticism must read this as an example of good writing and clear thinking. Excellent bibliography, marvelous notes!

Brilliant
As the previous reviewers have noted, this is a clever, wonderfully written book that makes sense of Cather and mincemeat of decades of politically oriented criticism. It is disheartening to read of all the absurdity that has been written about Cather (and, by extension, so many other wonderful writers)and realize the amount of dreadful criticism, narrow thinking and senseless writing that is being generated and propagated by the academic presses. This book is a breath of fresh air, showing that the Emperor of Academia really has no clothes.

A Great Case Study in the Politics of Books
In a lucid, readable style Acocella explains how in the field of Cather studies, common sense has left the building and the lunatic fringe has set up camp. To many, it does not matter how fine a author Cather was but whether she was enough of a lesbian and leftist to qualify as an Approved Writer for the academy. Acocella explains with great panache how one can be a Republican and self-styled old maid like Cather and still be a great American writer. Riveting reading.

The World of the Chow Chow
Compared to the other books specifically on Chow Chows, this book is better. However, that is not saying much. A real good book would deal more in-depth on the care, genetics, potential health problems and their cure or prevention, and breeding (whether to breed or not). Also important would be a more detailed and illustrated chapter on what to look for and avoid in the Chow. Other books, including this one, tend to overemphasize pages and pages of glossy photos of show winners, their kennels, their trophies, etc. - none of which are really helpful to the average Chow owner. A good book would stress the importance of health and functionality over show dog looks (which are influenced by passing fads, often downright harmful to a dog.) I sincerely hope that chow breeders get away from overly stocky, overly built chows who can't trot without panting heavily because of overly short muzzles, Chows with overly thick eyefolds that obscure their vision, Chows who don't whelp naturally because either their puppies have overly big heads or their anatomical structure no longer accommodates natural whelping, and chows that can't move right because they are not built right. The greatest travesty to Chows would be reduce the once proud, independent, working dog to a man-made freak like the English bulldog.

Chow Chows Rule....
I contributed 12 photographs to this project and at the time it was printed...this book did a good job of showing where the Chows where today. Also mentioned were the Kennels that raised the Chows and showed them in the ring. If you want a good quality Chow, then I think you should go with a breeder. I have owned 5 Chows and still have a white male that runs the house.
Full blooded Chows are a joy to live with...It was a great
experience to be a part of this project...

A must for any Chow owner!
The World of the Chow Chow is absolutely fantastique! It is filled with stunning photos and an abundance of information on each Chow that is proudly displayed - it is only equaled by Isabella Milani's Chow Chow Champions of Europe in quality and it blows every other Chow book out of the water. Sure, it's a little bit pricey but it is definitely worth every penny. You will not regret owning this book.
