The Missing Homework
This is a story about a kid and his name is Bill. He opens his arithmetic book then he finds a funny looking number paper. His best friend Ken helped him look for his homework. Ken had an idea so he told Bill, "Let's do everything that we did yesterday so we can find your homework." I like this book because I did not know what was going to happen.

Hey Oprah! Give this book a try!
Set in New Jersey the 50's and 60's, Household Words is a very heartbreaking novel about a young Jewish woman with two small daughters whose life changes when her husband suddenly dies. The author's prose style is spare without being dry. She is able to present a moving portrait of a very strong and appealing woman with a great sense of humor. I first read this book ten years ago and I've never been able to forget it.
Penquin should reprint this book immediately.

In pursuit of Back to Basics Living
I read Joan R. Shortney's "How to live on Nothing" back when it was first published in the early 1970's.Of course that was the era when books of this nature, on what we called "back to nature", were more commonplace than they are now. I remember eagerly reading Shortney's chapter on making your own pair of moccasins,or clogs. She even gave you step by step directions on how to make home brewed dandelion wine! What made this book so interesting was that she weaved her practical applications along with her biography. I saw through her words the life of a fledgling journalist in pre war II New York CIty. I met the friends of her youth, the greek itinerant poet who lived on virtually nothing amidst the trees of Central Park, the old man in upstate New York who showed his debt ridden daughter's family how to forage for edible plants, and how to have fun without spending any money at all. Perhaps the most well thumbed chapter for me was the one on camping. Shortney lists this pastime as the one least expensive and most enjoyable. Again, she highlights equipment needed and best places to go, but she does so with her own memories of travelling across country with her husband, Bill, in their well worn station wagon. Although, her chapter on finding shelter is certainly outdated,(she is able to rent a house on Long Island for less than $100 a month), it is intriguing nonetheless, and appeals to my sense of nostalgia with a hint of practicality. My copy is carefully preserved in plastic wrap now, the pages falling away from the binding. But I revisit it often, reaffirming the values of simple living that have become rather an anachronism in this possession ridden age we now face.

Mennonite-Brethren compilation of Hymns
I like this hymnal because it has the old standards (ie doxology) as well as new, fun hymns, from all over the world. It does NOT have "blood" songs, and is written, where applicable, in four-part harmony.

Good resource!
"They Signed the Constitution" by Elizabeth Levy has become an excellent resource for me to use in the classroom. I teach 7th grade social studies, and we spend 1 quarter of the year on government. My colleague and I have used most of this book for the past 3 years to supplement the rest of the material we use. We have also created a worksheet to be used with it. Students take turns reading aloud in class from this book. They find it easy to read and easy to understand, definitely not the dry textbook we're used to reading! I recommend this book for elementary and junior high teachers teaching government, as well as students looking for an easy way to understand part of our early American history.

A young woman in 1920's Greenwich Village.
A young Jewish woman leaves her New Jersey home in search of love and adventure in 1920's Greenwich Village. She meets a lot of interesting people, has love affairs and forms lasting friendships. She also catches pnemonia(which seems to be a great way to relax and make new friends back then). She also attends a political rally in Union Square which is vividly told.
This is Joan Silber's second novel, and like Household Words, it is out of print. This is unfortunate. I see Gwyneth Paltrow in the movie version.

Good introduction to biopsychosocial assessment
The authors all teach at the Smith College School for Social Work, and this book developed from their lectures on biopsychosocial theories of development. Their students report that of all the books purchased during their graduate career, this is the one they refer back to most often. Well-chosen cases illuminate the theories, and issues of culture and gender are nicely integrated.
