Definitely worth reading
This a really good read. The authors begin from the premise that organizations are now more than ever forced to operate in a climate of change. Their capacity for transformation is therefore increasingly essential for their survival. The authors outline seven strategies for achieving such a transformation: coercion, persuasive communication, participation, structural rearrangement, role modelling, extrinsic rewards and expectancy.

The different chapters are presented and organised in a readily accessible style, and their argument has a powerful intuitive appeal because of the way it resonates with many of our commonplace, day-to-day experiences of organisational culture and change.

If the book has a weakness it is one common to this genre - namely that it deals much more effectively with what should be done than how it should be done. I find their seven strategies much more useful as a diagnostic or descriptive tool - helping to understand change efforts as merely one of several possible approaches - rather than as a prescriptive blueprint for how change can be implemented.

Good supplement to Calculus I
There is no such thing as doing too many calculus problems. This is the book you need to get ready for calculus exams. It's quick, easy to use, portable (a rare thing in calculus books). The only thing I would suggest is to include some harder problems. If you are able to do all of the problems in the book flawlessly, but no more, I doubt if you would get above a C in our calculus program. It's good only through Calculus I. If you're in Calculus II, it would be appropriate to review what you should know.

Introduction to Fund Accounting

A Good Introductory Text
I use this textbook in teaching my governmental accounting course at our local community college, and I am also a CPA practicing in local government.

This textbook provides a good introduction to basic fund accounting concepts, specifically local governmental accounting. It is short (only seven chapters), which is great for a semester-long course, since it allows plenty of time for covering the material in-depth.

The first four chapters move fairly slowly, introducing the concepts of not-for-profit organizations and fund accounting. They also provide a thorough review of basic accounting concepts, although for some students, the material is almost too simplistic.

The last three chapters are the heart and soul of the course, dealing with budgetary transactions, property tax transactions, encumbrance accounting, interfund transactions, revenue and expenditure detail and preparation of basic financial statements.

The material deals solely with transactions in a general fund, so there is no exposure to the types of transactions which are peculiar to other fund types. As a practicing governmental accountant, this sometimes seems less than adequate to me, but I have to remind myself that this is an introductory course and textbook, and its purpose is to give students a glimpse into the world of governmental accounting.

The author knows her material well; she studied at the University of Arizona with one of the pioneers in fund accounting, Edward S. Lynn. Indeed, portions of her textbook are modeled on his text, Fund Accounting: Theory and Practice.

The only drawback I find in this textbook is it lacks somewhat in providing real-world applications of the material. Many of the methods discussed in the text are not used in practice anymore, largely because of advances in recent technology. However, that is where my practical experience comes in, as I provide those real-world applications to supplement the material in the book throughout the course.

All in all, a very good introductory text.

Irish Wit and Wisdom

Irish humor
If you are Irish this book is for you! The wit is from the "old country." Many of the jokes are old but timeless. They belie the culture of the not so distant past. The Irish find humor in almost every situation, and this book demonstrates this very well. The wisdom is ageless and is exactly what has gotten the Irish through their bad times. If you want to know why the Irish can get through their hard times read this book. Joan Larson Kelly understands and has chosen the best of the Irish Wit and Wisdom. She knows Pat and Mike inside out. For insight into the Irish Wit and Wisdom read this wonderful book.

Good read
Interesting subject and time. I found the biography a bit dry. Would have welcomed further comments on the court of her birth, Portugal, and the development of her court by marriage. Ms Taylor gives us good information on the economics of the French, English and Burgugundian relations and the negociations between these courts, but the insights into the personalities are too shetchy. Never the less a book that makes you want to know more about persons who most historians seem to have forgoten.

Alternate views on the life of Joan of Arc
This is the only book of its kind that I have ever come across. It explains a "controversial" theory of Joan of Arc's life where she was actually born of royal blood and possibly related to the Dauphin.

If you're one to like mysteries and are open to alternate theories, this is an excellent book! Keep an open mind, and also, realize not everything stated by the author is truth. More like speculation!

Portrait of a soul in turmoil
It is, of course, Jackie who has the most bios written of the Kennedy women. But in the midst of her dignity and class and Ethel's forthright personality, there is Joan, now ex-wife of Sen. Ted. This 1970's-era bio is certainly aptly titled: this unKennedy-esque wife was, during most of her marriage, in the background, tormented in silence by her own insecurity and her husband's philandering and its most publicized tragedy in 1969. "Joan, the Reluctant Kennedy" delves more into that part of the woman who never quite felt a part of the clan, but does something of a disservice by glossing over the years-long battle with alcoholism, her slips and relapses and the lessons she might provide that might spare other sufferers her elongated torment. Stunningly beautiful, certainly, but Joan Kennedy was and remains a person of substance, in many respects emotionally fragile but, despite that, a fighter who broke from her general anonymity as another Kennedy wife and established her own identity in music and poetry. While this book doesn't cover the last 30 years of Mrs. Kennedy's life, it does take us up to her son's cancer surgery and her turmoils before. This bio is an admirable effort, and it's somewhat disappointing that other biographers apparently haven't deemed this lady interesting enough for an updated portrait. But this is a worthy start.

A Good Old-fashioned Read
I read this book a long time ago and picked it up again recently. Even though I'm not a great fan of "gothic" novels, I remembered that this one was special and I was not at all disappointed. Wealthy Marylda Lovell is on her way back to the US after doing refugee work in Europe post WWII. As she is traveling through France she has a fender-bender with a the handsome Scots Laird of Cairdrie. Of course, romance blooms, they marry and settle down with his formidable grandmother in Castle Cloud. The only problem is that Marylda feels herself being taken over by the spirit of another Lady Cairdrie, who was also an American heiress. This is really an old fashioned ghost story, most enjoyable from beginning to end.
