Definitely Recommended ? -- Keep this one!

THE 5TH AND FINAL STORY OF THE HAMPTONS!
This book contains the final story of the O'Neill/Hampton saga.
Seth Hampton was met in the [original HH Christmas stories 1990] and reprinted in THE SOLDIER and THE REBEL along with his brother Rafe Hampton.

Seth had love the girl, Blythe who loved Rafe, so he bowed out and headed West away from Virginia. All he wanted was peace from the horrors of war. And to lose his nightmares.

He wanted to hook up with a wagon train heading west, but the people voted against having a southerner in their midst. The wagonmaster wanted to include Seth because he was a doctor.

The only way he would be allowed to join was if Kate MacAllister and her brothers, nineteen year old Jeremy and 12 year old Nick would include him as their driver.

Jeremy had suffered in a Confederate prison and Kate had lost her two older brothers and a fiance in the war - her mother died of a broken heart and her father soon after. NO she was not having anything to do with a southern rebel. Doctor or not.

There was an attraction growing between Seth and Kate which both fought, knowing it would only lead to heartache. And Seth couldn't stand many more rejections.

Read about Nick's almost instant friendship with Seth and how Jeremy grew to admire him and how Kate came to love him. Such an inspiring and wonderful story of healing of the hearts. And Kate's devotion to healing Seth's wounds of the body.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - another keeper for the bookshelf.

A testament of love, loss, and exile
"Unthinkable Tenderness: Selected Poems" is an important volume by Juan Gelman of Argentina. This collection has been edited and translated into English by Joan Lindgren, and features a foreword by Eduardo Galeano.

Gelman spent time in exile during a period of Argentine military dictatorship; his son and daughter-in-law disappeared under the dictatorship. Much of this book deals with these painful realities. The book includes a helpful chronology of the Argentine turmoil from 1966-95. Unfortunately, this is an English-only edition; I would have preferred a bilingual edition.

Many of Gelman's poems are dark and mournful. This is understandable, since many of them deal with such subjects as exile, torture, and assassination. There are also poems about love, and about poetry itself. I was especially moved by his series of prose poems that explore the psychological landscape of the exile. He writes, "I am a monstrous plant. My roots are thousands of miles from me and no stem connects us" (from "Under Foreign Rain" XVI).

This is a haunting and powerful volume. I highly recommend this book to those interested in Latin American poetry, literature of exile, and human rights.

A gem even in translation
Even in translation (although I wish this were a dual language book) a very distinctive use of repetition and very tight construction shines through. I would call the work less "political poetry" than "poetry of human relationships that have a political context". Even poems of anguish regarding the Argentine "disappeared", have a universality rather than a stridentcy. The poems include exquisite turns of phrase that make reading it a pleasure of waiting for the next magnificant phrase.

The Weeping Ash

Typically brilliant Aiken
One of my favourite Joan Aiken books. From page one, the reader is drawn in to the story. Aiken is a great storyteller, you feel like you are part of the story. Her description of the characters and situations are so good, you feel like you are there. Like most Aiken characters, they are remarkably original and un-stereotyped. In this novel, she goes into particular detail regarding the suffering of a bride of an arranged marriage in the 18th century, and how she deals with her almost hopeless situation, while at the same time finding room for many happier events. However, like several of her other novels, she doesn't pull any punches when it comes to the realities of dangerous situations, so watch out for murder, cruelty and death along the way...

one of my favorite books
This book is comprised of two parallel stories, one beginning in India and the other in England. The journey of Cal and Stella contrasts well with the abusive new home of their cousin Fannie. The descriptions are vivid, and the storylines draw you in from the start. As in all Aiken's books it is full of adventure and mystery (but it is not as far fetched as some of her children's stories). Finally, there are those little details (not so little if you've paid attention to her writing) that connect this to her other books. If you've read The Smile of the Stranger, you'll appriciate them, but it is not necessary to have read anything else. All who enjoy a compelling read should get this book!

A Love For Cats
Joan Holub's Why Do Cats Meow? is an exciting and informative picture book. Whether readers are interested in newborn kittens or any other size cats, this book offers amazing color photographs and illustrations that show answers to the questions that many cat lovers have. Learn the different sizes of the cat family and how many kittens each cat can have. Explore why cats have claws, whiskers and tails, and why they meow, scratch, purr, hiss and hunt. Find out if cats can see in the dark, if they can hear sounds that humans cannot, if they need baths, and how much cats sleep. Discover why cats rub against people, why they go inside and outside so much, and which toys they like to play with. You may be surprised to find out that the one thing cats love and need the most is people, even though they act like they can take care of themselves. The large text and question-answer format target younger readers, but anyone who enjoys learning about cats will fall in love with this book because of the interesting and educational information that describes cats' lives.

American Library Assoc. Pick of the Lists
This book was chosen as a 2001 American Library Assoc. Pick of the Lists book. The photos and art are exceptionally nice. It's a really good easy-to-read book about cats at my kids' (who are 7 and 8 yrs.) reading level.

The Woman in the Surgeon's Body

a very readable academic study
Ms Cassell has written a very readable book about women who practice surgery. In spite of the approachability, the book concerns an academic study, not a journalistic expose'. This study follows a previous anthropological study of male surgeons, and a dissertation in women's studies. This book will be of interest to people who are in the medical fields, those who study social behaviour, and those interested in women practicing 'nontraditional' careers. I think it would be of particular value for both men and women who are considering a career as a surgeon.

Very honest portraits
As a female surgeon, I am (of course) very interested in the subject matter. So many of the descriptions and explanations, of both the wonderful and awful aspects of being a surgeon, rang true to me. Along with Charles Bosk's "Forgive & Remember", I would highly recommend this book not only to any medical student, male or female, interested in a career in surgery, but also to any family member, loved one, or significant other of a surgeon. It will give you tremendous insight into our (rather singular) worldview, and how and why we "embody" it.

An Audacious Book!
This modestly sized volume attempts to do nothing less than reconcile the seemingly separate worlds of objective science and spiritual or metaphysical phenomena. I believe, to a large extent, that the authors succeed. As an engineer, my educational background and grounding was in the physical sciences, where rational laws govern everything that is observed to take place in the world. Some of these laws may not be known or fully understood, but nonetheless, what we see in the world tells us, as scientists, that we live in a lawful universe. I was, therefore, troubled and somewhat frustrated when I began, some years ago, to explore the areas on the fringe of hard science: psychology, social sciences, and spiritual schools of thought. I always yearned for some demonstration that what was observed and experienced in these areas followed laws, as did the physical phenomena with which we tend to be more familiar. On the other hand, some readers who have accepted metaphysical beliefs on faith or intuition may have wondered, from time to time, if it wouldn't be possible to find ways to prove them or prove their veracity in a way that would be convincing to the scientific community.

Fortunately, You Are the Mystery offers something for the skeptic who would like to believe more, and also the believer who would like to have his or her sense of reason satisfied. The book, in its examination of different levels of consciousness, takes a very pragmatic point of view, emphasizing effects on our lives and those around us, rather than theories.

I found especially interesting and useful the brief summation of the various schools of 19th and 20th century psychology, and the way in which they fit into current scientific discoveries about the human mind and emotional makeup. The chapter on mediation includes a fascinating discussion of the physical effects of meditation on the glands of the endocrine system, and the effects on the personality of using psychotropic drugs as a short cut to 'heightened awareness.' The chapter on 'Ultraconsciousness' offers a penetrating analysis of the state (dilemma?) of organized religion in our generation.

You Are the Mystery is rather scholarly in format, in that it is footnoted and draws heavily on published sources as well as individual case histories. But the style of writing is quite readable and accessible. All in all, I must say it was thought provoking, and provided some striking insights into my own life and process of personal development.

The Unraveling of the Mystery
This book is the hallmark literary investigation that bridges the gap between science and spirituality. It is thrilling to see that these researchers have linked Eastern levels of consciousness with Western schools of thought, thereby allowing the individual to integrate left and right brain functions, illuminating the holistic path to Ultra-consciousness.

What a delight!
This book has turned into a library book that we continually recheck because my four year old can't get enough of Walliwigs. She has memorized it and now reads the story to me at bedtime. The book has also expanded her vocabulary. She knows what an ornithologist is about and has begun calling people unconsolable when they let their emotions get the best of them! I highly recommend this book to late three and four year crowd as well as older children. When it is read using different voices for different characters and letting poor Walliwigs really holler for his Ma, it is unmatchable. The illustrations are humorous and very character revealing.

Upbeat, encouraging, and affirming of individuality!
My 12 year old daughter loved this book so much that she wanted to keep the library book! It's not only a book appropriate for early readers and young children, but also appeals to young adolescents, who really need to hear that they are very special and loved just as they are! The story line is engaging, and the illustrations are superb.
