Joan of Arc: The Early Debate

A great source for Joan enthusiasts
Dr. Fraioli presents an in depth analysis of the early debate surrounding Joan. Drawing on many contemporary sources, such as the writings of Christine De Pizan and those letters atributed to Joan, the author backs up her arguments. There are also appendices which include sources in French for those scholars who prefer to check their own translations against the authors. It's a great book for historians, theologians, and others. It is slightly advanced, but should not pose a problem for college students and above. Overall, a great read and a great aid for Joan-related research.

Masterpiece of Fly casting
It' was a wonderful, wonderful world. I like very much Mrs. Joan Wulff. She was a master of fly casting and has been deepened by meet Lee Wulf. In this book, she is talking about everything of fly casting, so easily for novice with perfect theories. I specially impressed at section for handicapped person. I have never seen like that in any casting books. It was little short, but enough to make her thoughtfull person. It is small disappointment that there are few real photos, but so many illustrations cover it. I think, it would be better to buy a Joan's casting video tape with this book.

A great place to start along with your first cast!
Joan Wulff's flyfishing book is the perfect beginning to a long relationship with flyfishing. My husband bought me this book in 1991, and I have referred to it ever since. It's refreshingly written from a women's perspective. All the basics are here: casting, wading, flyrod selection and line differences, clothing recommendations, understanding insects and the various types of fish and flyfishing both fresh and salt water. You'll find nothing pretentious in this book, even though it's written by the best known female flyfisher worldwide. Trying flyfishing? You had better buy this book! Reading it while you are learning will enhance your enjoyment and understanding of the sport.

Grace, not power, makes the fly go where you want it.
Between Joan Wulff and Cathy Beck we don't need no stinking he-man fly fishing writers. I've enjoyed fly fishing with my husband for years. I've taken courses and still he could out cast me for both distance and accuracy. With Joan's Fly-Casting Accuracy as a guide I've become more accurate in the 15-40 ft cast than my husband who has fly fished 30 years to my 10. He's reading it now.

A Beautiful Story of Loss
A healing read for everyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one. "Joan, A Mother's Memoir" is a small book with a big punch; anger, pain, grief, and, ultimately, acceptance.

Joan's tremendous courage during her battle against breast cancer has obviously come to her from the narrator - her mother.

A beautiful book. Lovingly written. Tearfully read.

Great Pioneer Book
This is a great pioneer book. It is about a fictionist family-the Carpenters-who travels from Pennsylvania to Illinois in the mid 1800s. They encounter death, low water, marriage, and a wonderful feast. I would recommend this book for anybody interested in pioneers. This is a great tie-in book for a history unit, but also great for pleasure reading.

Joyful Nordic Humor: A Family Album
Published in Paperback by Penfield Books (01 August, 1997)

Nordic Heritage, Celebrations, Humor and Folk Art
Joan points to a photo of a Viking festival vendor with waffles on his horns: "Isn't this wild?! Don't you just love it?! " Through her decades of putting together books about Scandinavian and Finnish Americans, photographer and Penfield Press publisher Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret has attended numerous Nordic American festivals, as well as sites in Northern Europe. She has collected stories, met unique celebrants of Nordic heritage, and taken scores of pictures of Swedes, Norwegians, Finns and Danes at their fun. "No one has as much fun as the Nordic Americans. Few other ethnic groups tell jokes about themselves." Whether it's the antics of "weekend Vikings," the assiduous preparations of church basement women, the parodic invention of Finn America's Saint Urho, or the ritual consumption of lye-soaked lutefisk-like lemmings to the sea-Nordic Americans go "all out."

Joyful Nordic Humor, a collection of essays, stories, photos, cartoons and folk art, reflects this hilarity with spirited thoroughness. Joyful Nordic can serve as a "family album" for those involved in the festivities or as a sourcebook for those interested in their Nordic roots. A recent morning television series introducing the public to "Euro"-ethnic eccentricity in America proved very popular. Joyful Nordic is a "best of." It might even serve anthropologists seeking new frontiers of study! In all, the self-portrait of Nordic Americans (Liffring-Zug Bourret is part Norwegian) is done with warmth and sincere appreciation.

Topics include "the dilemma of the horns," about the persistence of Viking helmet horns despite archeological evidence; the disastrous "St. Lucia" visitation made to a hung-over Nobel-winning Sinclair Lewis; the Norwegian bachelors of Herman, Minnesota; Swedish gasoline (coffee); the fictional "Finn Who Would Not Take a Sauna" (by Garrison Keillor); the ministry of humorist Rev. Jonna Jensen; the shocking truth about oatmeal lefse; Julebukk (Norwegian Christmas holiday rituals); the story of Urho, who saved Finland's nonexistent grape crop from grasshoppers; and much more. Sixteen pages of color photos include Viking reenactments, Nordic folk art, a flattened Dala horse, and "the tattooed man." Illustrations include black-and-white photos from several sources, drawings by Theodore Kittelson, Norway's first artist to use humor, and cartoons by David Fitzsimmons.

Fitzsimmons also provided illustrations for Bernhard Hillila's Finnfun, another humor book published by Penfield Press this year. Hillila combines a penchant for puns with a storehouse of anecdotal material in his impeccably charming book. Penfield has never had so many laughs. 1997 is our joyful year.

An ice skating judge gets murdered.
"Judge Me Nottingham" is the story of an international ice-skating judge who was found murdered in the pro's room just prior to the start of the last qualifying event for the 1995 U.S. Nationals. And based on what the TV public has seen in the "Competitors Scores" over the years, my opinion is that one could easily deduce that many of the skaters might dream of such an event. And the "Scoring" at the last Olympics adds more to the book's intrigue.

This book nicely follows Book 1, "Nice Shows" and continues with the adventures of Berrien Gamble, ice skating coach, ice show producer and co-owner of the "Nice Skates Ice Arena." Again, Berrien and her faithful dog "Kristi" are heavily involved in another murder investigation. I'm not surprised because of Berrien's investigative nature.

This book is a great follow-up to "Nice Shows." Please note: this reviewer believes that the series title change is appropriate, as "Nice Skates Ice Arena" is the place where the "Murders" occur and Berrien is again the adventurous amateur sleuth.

I recommend this book very highly.

Active imagination is a must-read for introverts.
If you fit the following profile, then you owe it to yourself to read about active imagination: introvert, deep thinker, and aged in the mid 20s while not yet settling into married life. This book can be looked at as a self-help book if you possess those qualities because it will gently remind you of sources of unhappiness that you would not readily accept consciously as being a valid reason for getting depressed. The danger of ignoring these sources of conflict is that your mind will take over and cope with the use of the imagination leading to fantasies. Order springs out of chaos when you are armed with the knowledge of this book and are at a loss to explain the behavior of yourself and others.
