John Quincy Adams: Sixth President of the United States (Encyclopedia of Presidents)

A juvenile biography of John Quincy Adams, 6th President
Zachary Kent provides a more than solid introduction to John Quincy Adams in this volume in the Encyclopedia of Presidents series. The story begins with Adams as the most hated man in Congress because of his insistence on presenting the House of Representatives petitions by citizens demanding an end to slavery. Kent then covers Adams's distinguished career as a diplomat which saw postings in Prussia, Russia and Great Britain before he became James Monroe's Secretary of State. His one term as President actually becomes the least important part of his political career. Adams actually died in the House of Representatives, collapsing before a vote in 1848.

Kent does a nice job of making it clear that for John Quincy Adams duty and character were more important that popularity. When he was elected to the Senate as a Federalist, Adams often supported the policies of President Thomas Jefferson, such as the Louisiana Purchase. When his party actually nominated somebody else to run for the Senate in his place, Adams immediately resigned. This episode is certainly representative of the quality of the man.

This is not a slick looking book but it does provide more than adequate coverage of the life of its subject, which is supposed to be its purpose. There are better looking juvenile biographies of Adams, but they do not provide the amount of information students will find here. This volume is illustrated with dozens of black and white illustrations, mostly engravings and paintings from Adams's lifetime, as well as maps, pamphlets and signatures. The book contains a detailed Chronology of American History that lists virtually ever year from the birth of Washington in 1732 to the crash of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986, when this book was published.

Definitive Tribute to an Important American Artist
At last, John Curry has a book in print worthy of his art. Ms. Junker has suceeded in paying a noble yet sadly overdue tribute to this unique and often neglected artist. Curry's paintings capture the emotion and natural force of American scenes in a way that was very much his own. Works like "Tornado over Kansas" and the scene of John Brown in "A Tragic Prelude" embody some of the greatest expressions of conflict to be found in American art.

Song of the Open Whale-Road
In broad, Whitmanesque flourishes that embrace the contradictions of a faithful life, and in concise stanzas that catch and amplify the dissonant music that sounds between the temple and the street, Adam Sol, in Jonah's Promise, never forgets the Orphic basis of his art. And like that other boundary-crosser, Sol moves with a purpose -- with a sense, even in the most playful of his poems, that the stakes are always high, and that the ground is always shifting. This is a postmodern brand of wisdom, and it's apparent throughout this accomplished first book. As Sol looks at family history, Jewish identity, and questions of intimacy between friends and lovers, his eye remains focused on the difficult lines between what may be known and what must remain a mystery, as in this passage from "Document," regarding a distant relative lost in the First World War: "The handwriting is faint/ and the idioms obscure, buried in Polish markings,/ stamps and creases like his corpse somewhere underground./ But the name, Sol, is clear and sharp as blood on glass." By ultimately refusing the prophet's role built into the traditions of his title poem, Adam Sol instead claims poetry. This is a book as smart, restless, unpredictable, and rewarding as such struggles over the turf of tradition must be.

funny
Not much new here for Dilbert fans, but a slightly above average version of his common theme: harping on the hells of cubicle life. As business returns to conservatism after the splurge of the nineties, perhaps these cartoons will be more necessary to keep up spirits among oppressed workers everywhere. Have fun reading this, and don't read them all at once!

A poignant, provocative story of dogs and their importance in our lives. Communicative, intuitive companions, dogs provide opportunity and assistance for human learning and growth. This book presents unique observations of the canine world, gleaned over the author's lifetime involvement with these special creatures. The author discusses the significant bonding of humans and dogs, provides comfort and insight into the grief and pain of pet loss and offers a fresh perspective on the spiritual nature enbodied in our noble friend, the dog. Kabbalah: Mythic Judaism (Ars Magica)

Beyond the "Medieval Paradigm" into understanding
This is probably the single most impressive supplement to Ars Magica ever written. The book is handled with great knowledge, grave respect, and an intensity of scholarship that one rarely sees in gaming. I handed it to a non-gaming friend who is a Torah scholar and he was impressed; he quibbled with certain points, but overall he saw this as a book that helped clear up many basic misconceptions of Judaism, especially as practiced during the Middle Ages.

Kabbalah will give you background on the Jewish communities of the Middle Ages, their beliefs, their mores, and their habits. It will give you insight into humour, worship, mysticism, and attempting to survive as a marginalized yet recognized people. Unlike the poor pastische earlier supplements have given to the Perfecti, this supplement gives a very accurate presentation of Jewish life (and how it varies in different parts of Europe).

Pick this book up and learn. Shalom.

Killers : a play

I witnessed every emotion possible. What a writer!
This is a play about two brothers who kill. One does it professionally as a member of the armed forces, the other does it as a reaction to his girlfriend's unfaithfulness. We see one brother celebrated and the other punished. We see the reaction on family and friends leading, eventually, to the breakup of the brothers' parents' marriage. Adam Pernak is so skillful in the way he evokes such strong emotions one minute with belly laughter the next and with a perfect mix of each.

KILLING ADAM The Emasculation of Humanity

A clarion call
KILLING ADAM The Emasculation Of Humanity by Maya Emmett is an extraordinary work whose time has come. Delivered with compassion and elegance, Ms. Emmett's powerful call for understanding and restoration between the genders and her compelling insistance on a cease-fire in the gender war is a message that is long overdue. This book is an offered hand to much-maligned manhood and a shot of pure courage for women willing to take a stand and end the hostilities.
